My wife and I watch Mission: Impossible 2 for the FIRST time
Ойын-сауық
My wife and I are watching Mission Impossible 2 for the first time!
Tom Cruise returns to his role as Ethan Hunt in the second installment of "Mission: Impossible." This time Ethan Hunt leads his IMF team on a mission to capture a deadly German virus before it is released by terrorists. His mission is made impossible due to the fact that he is not the only person after samples of the disease. He must also contest with a gang of international terrorists headed by a turned bad former IMF agent who has already managed to steal the cure.

People have already commented that the knife scene at the end was a real stunt but it's crazy how real it was. From the making of extras they poured concrete footers, installed a U shaped set of bars, and then a chain hanging from the cross bar. The measured carefully and attached the chain to back of the knife. The stuntman actually did jump and slam the knife towards Tom Cruise's eye. If the chain was the wrong length, or broke, or the metal bars gave, well...MI3 would have been staring someone other than Cruise. He actually did the rock climbing jump between the two cliffs too.
From 3 on up the Mission movies get better and better and the stunts are crazier and crazier. Tom Cruise does a great job playing Ethan Hunt, and he knows how to entertain the audience

He did say that MI:Dead reckoning part 1&2 are the final installments for him and for Ethan Hunt. As much as we like a certain character it's time to let go of this character. They can always start a new franchise with a new character. They've been hinting for this possibility since MI3 but Hunt was to popular of a character to get rid of.

This movie seems to get a lot of hate online but I've always really enjoyed it. The over the topness of the movie never really bothered me. As many others have said, the knife at Tom Cruise's eye was completely real. It was a real and sharp knife that was really that close to his real eye. It may not be a HUGE HUGE stunt but it's an insane stunt!

I also love this movie. The 3rd one is the one I don't really rewatch. As you said this one gets a lot of hate but I loved the fun and the stunts in this as well as the espionage of the first one. The eye stunt - as you said the knife was real and on a wire that pulled down and he apparently insisted that Ambrose yank down hard on it - the measurements for that would have to be exact.
I really don't get why there's soo much hate on this. I love this movie. The motorcycle chase at the end is incredible.

"It looked like it really touched his eye lash there." Well, fun fact, that is a real knife that did touch his eyelash because Tom insisted a real knife be used. It was held 1/4 inch from his eye by a wire, and Tom also insisted that Dougary Scott use all his strength in pushing against the wire.
Fun fact about this movie. John Woo handed in a 3.5 hour cut to Paramount, with a lot more violence. Cruise ended up locking Woo out of the editing room, with Cruise being in charge of the final edit.

It's a great entry in the John Woo movie collection. It rivals Face/Off for set pieces and hammy dialogue and sheer entertainment. However, it's radically different to the other movies in style and in being primarily an action movie rather than an espionage/heist movie so it does feel out of place.

As mentioned in your M:I video, the original idea in this franchise was to make each film radically different in tone. Bringing in John Woo to do this sequel was the perfect choice for that concept, because this movie is VASTLY different in look, feel, tone, etc. And I still wish they would have stuck with that idea.

This one isn't so much bad as it is overstuffed with early 2000s tropes. Plus you put John Woo on autopilot, add in that aggro Limp Bizkit version of the theme song, and there has never been a more 2000 movie than this.
@LukeLovesRose

I don't think Woo was on autopilot so much as heavily modified by Hollywood-based producers. Compare this to Face/Off (made at a similar time and place) to see the difference in quality when he has more autonomy. The Limp Bizkit track is weak compared to the original though.
This movie was a product of the time it’s not a bad film at all it’s in the same category as face off and other late 90’s action films the slow mo the explosions etc
@javix2013

To enjoy it, you have to see it as a John Woo movie, then you will like it, don't compare it with the rest of the saga, because then it will lose points, it happened to me like many, the first time I saw it I didn't like it so much, but changing the perspective to see it as a John Woo movie, then I began to appreciate it more and over the years I grew fond of this movie, and it is one of my favorites of the saga, I know it by heart, every moment, like Face Off, something that does not happen to me with the other MI movies, of which I remember little.
This is easily the worst one in the franchise. But a guilty pleasure for me though. Some of the shots were cool and different from anything in the franchise. If you didn't know, the knife to the eye scene was totally real. Just another crazy stunt in this franchise that Tom does for 'entertainment'. Same for the rock climbing opening.

@Luke M we at least give reasons to why we don't like it. Unlike the fact that you call J.J a hack yet give no reason as to why you think he is one. MI2 is not a terrible but it is the worst of the series. The writing and acting is over the top. "Would it make you feel better if I said I didn't want you to do this?" "Yes much" "well feel better" that such stupid dialog forcing a romance on two characters that only knew each other for less than 48 hours. And are already in love with each other. The action while nicely choreographed it was an over compensation on how weak the plot is. Ethan Hunt was a far better character once MI3 happened. He was more mature and grounded character and was back to being a team player than trying to make him the lone wolf in MI2. And it genuinely showed that when he loses a team member it genuinely affected him and struggled with the loss. MI2 was like "oh my buddy doctor died..oh well." "Who took my place? Sean Ambrose grrrr I hate him for reasons unexplained". It's it's just shit writing.
@CrazeeAdam
Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah. It is cool for sure. Like A LOT of this movie is very cool. But not necessairly very "Mission Impossible".
I was lucky enough to see MI2 when it was in theaters. Bought the CD soundtrack, too. It doesn't feel that long ago... In 2017, I visited the area where they filmed the rock climbing scene; it's Dead Horse Point State Park in Moab, Utah. I didn't even realize it until I looked at surrounding cliffs and thought they looked familiar. It's definitely worth a side trip if you're passing through the area en route to/from Arches National Park. I also went to Sydney for the first time last year, and visited some of the places seen in the movie. Good times.
26:24 Fun fact about this stunt. The stunt team had to use a real knife that was really sharp because test footage using CGI didn't turn out well. They set up a rig and attached the end of the knife to a cord with four guys running it. The cord meant the knife could only go so far but if Tom Cruise moved more than a quarter of an inch off the ground the knife would have gone through his eye. I have no idea how the insurance company signed off on that. But then, each movie has progressively crazier stunts that leave me asking the same question.
SO SO SO SUPER EXCITED YALL ARE WATCHING MY ALL TIME FAV FILM!!! I'm not a Tom Cruise fan, but I really love the series going forward from here. I feel the same as Jen in that the series is best when it's espionage focused, and as the movies develop and you see more recurring characters and relationship building it gives this series heart and continuity you don't see much in the spy genre. I expect Jen to be very happy as this continues.

"Just the tip..." Did Jen miss that or ignore it? 😂 I was expecting a big eye roll. Great reaction!
It's easy to explain why Ethan Hunt fight choreography stunts are so kung-fu and athletic. MI1 - rookie Ethan Hunt, barely in the business MI2- peak Ethan Hunt with no limits, kinda like Cap in Winter Soldier MI3- a bit older mentor Hunt, wiser moves given his age I won't spoil it later on.

As I mentioned after the first Mission, #3 is when the series really takes off, it found its footing in that, with J.J. 26:23 fun trivia this was all practical, with a physical prop (not sure that it was a "real" sharpened knife though) and it was all measured and attached to a tether so that Dougray Scott could essentially thrust with all his might to make it seem more realistic. So the eyelash touch was a real thing done with practical effects under an extremely controlled setup

The knife to toms eye scene was practical effect
Dougray Scott was the original person cast as Wolverine in X-Men but had to drop out because he was committed to reshooting some scenes for this movie. That is why Hugh Jackman was the last one cast for X-Men. The knife in the eye stunt was practical, it was held back by a strong cable giving it just enough reach to touch Tom’s eyelashes. Some elements of this movie reminded me a lot of the movie Darkman with Liam Neeson, if you guys haven’t watched it I highly recommend it and would be surprised that Holden hasn’t seen it since it is Sam Raimi.
3:50 This guy walking on the plane is William Mapother. Cousin of Thomas Cruise Mapother IV.
It was the motorcycle sequence at the end that started Tom on his "being the boss so he can do his own stunts arc".
Another fun fact, the henchman played by William Mapother is Cruise's cousin. He would go on and play Ethan on LOST which I can't confirm but feel like is a nod to Mission Impossible.

#3….the Reset of the franchise, an finally the mask explanation. Background, Cruise was given the first season of “Alias” by J.J. Abrams an Cruise felt that was a modernized version of Mission Impossible an reached out to J.J., an if you look at the pilot of Alias & MI:3, there is quite a bit of DNA from the previous to the latter. The music (Michael Giachino) is perfect an a whole lot of fun, and definitely set the foundation of where the Mission Impossible series would go. Awesome review Guys!
I can’t wait for you guys to get to Ghost Protocol but the third film is critical for the future.

love the west world reference. fun fact, dougary scott (who played villain) almost played wolverine in x-men, but turned it down to do this film
The stunt with the knife and TC’s eye was completely real
Always enjoyed this movie, guilty pleasure in the sense that it has fun action and the 90s charm even if the movie is OTT. 8/10 is a perfectly fair rating, thank goodness you two enjoyed this! Interestingly it's also one of the last big old school blockbusters we got because after this we got Harry Potter, POTC, LOTR, MCU etc. This was the highest grossing movie of 2000. Just think about that, something like that would never happen nowadays!
I think the first one and second one were the best ones.

I used to be an electronics technician for the Royal Australian Navy. Weird things happen when you watch movies that you first saw before learning about electronics and watching them again after. "This will transmit your location to a satellite," referring to a tiny chip he injected into her. Nope. It takes very specialised equipment to transmit to a satellite up in orbit. Even if you could miniaturise it to git inside a tiny chip (you can't), but let's pretend we can for a second. The power required would burn you if you had it internally. That little chip wouldn't be able to transmit anything. At best, it could work like the chips in credit and debit cards. Passively. You'd need to get it right up close to a scanner designed to read the chips, too. There are some places that use implanted microchips for members as identification verification. Not many, because there aren't a lot of people willing to microchip themselves like their pets when there's perfectly good ID options available.

Holden, just so you know that knife that looked like it was close to Tom's eye lashes, actually was. Tom wanted a real knife and it was held that close to his eye. Also Tom's cousin was the thug guy in the lair with the beard, that was doing the money countdown.
These movies get better as they progress. Even though I still enjoyed this one, a lot of people didn't. But then again I saw this back in 2002 or whatever... back then everything was over the top 😆
If you want true, unfiltered John Woo action, you need to check out his classic Hong Kong films like Hard Boiled or The Killer. Hard Boiled, especially is just insane where the last 45min is basically one action scene.
