    Well, now you have to complete the Paul Verhoeven trilogy by watching Robocop and Starship Troopers too. The director is the only thing that connects them though, but they are all fun.

    The original story is short and hilarious. Written by Philip K Dick who did 'Blade Runner' (although more snappily named 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"), 'Scanners' and 'Minority Report' amongst others

    Philip K. Dick was absolutely brilliant. He wrote a lot about the nature of reality and identity. His fiction--and the movies and TV shows adapted from them--tend to be ambiguous, and while some people understandably want a tidy ending, his real gift was providing a thought-provoking, but vague ending.

    A couple of characters deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions: 1) the Best, Most Durable Human Shield award goes to the random guy on the escalator, and 2) the Best Elevator Timing Ever award goes to Melina. She gets two awards for doing it twice, saving Doug's life both times. Interestingly, all of these accolades involve a lifting system, as does Doug literally dis-arming Richter.

    Fun facts: #1 Sharon Stone played Lori. She's always played a sexy and dangerous woman two years before becoming famous with 'Basic Instinct'. #2 Brubaker, the name Arnold uses when checking into the Martian hotel, was the title and name of a well-known Robert Redford movie. The story Lori and the man tell him on Mars about how it was all an illusion makes no sense after everything she had told him in her apartment on Earth, when she confessed to him that her whole marriage was fake. Other Arnold movies you should watch: 'Conan the Barbarian' (1982), 'Conan the Destroyer' (1984) , and 'True Lies'

    I loved this movie when it first came out. They created new filming techniques to make this. The scene where you seen the train moving along the rail with the tv screens going on inside, was a miniature of the train with a tiny projector. Everytime I see this I am taken aback at how soothing and out of place Kuato's voice is.

    Arnold is a legend. His comedies are great. Start with Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Last Action Hero if it polls well. The Benny reveal is always a shocker the first time around. Kuato is his conjoined twin brother. And the director Paul Verhoeven directed a couple more awesome movies in Robocop, and Starship Troopers. I love Starship Troopers. Michael Ironsides Richter, Lori's evil boyfriend who lost his arms, was excellent in a very different but very awesome role in Starship Troopers. But you can put that a little farther down your list. Your subscribers and viewers are always going to pitch great movies.

    I subscribe to the theory the entire story is the rekall memory implant. Too many details of the plot are foreshadowed in advance not to have any meaning. Quaid did got what he payed for.

  • @rbrtck
    @rbrtck7 ай бұрын

    The movie is more literal and less meta than some people think. Everything we were shown actually happened, because if it were merely a memory implant or dream, then we would not have seen anything that Quaid did not, but we did. It's still a trippy mind-f---, but don't overthink it.

    The Disney movie John Carter (2012) is an adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars, one of the first interplanetary romance novels and a founding work in modern scifi. In the novel Mars is an ancient planet which is slowly dying. Life only remains possible because a few atmosphere plants are still in operation replenishing the air supply. Towards the end of the novel one of the atmosphere plants fails when its sole operator dies. Our hero, John Carter, "just happened" to have learned how to open the doors to the plant earlier in the story (Burroughs was a big fan of wildly improbably coincidences), so he goes to restart the plant before the planet suffocates. Just as Carter gets the plant back in operation he passes out and wakes up back on Earth. So, an ending very similar to Total Recall. As the whole Martial secret agent thing wasn't part of the original Philip Dick story, I kinda wonder if the writers "borrowed" from Burroughs here.

    Mars actually has a thin, low-pressure atmosphere that consists primarily of carbon dioxide, so technically that is not the vacuum of space just outside of the dome, although by the standards we're used to on Earth, it might as well be. There is virtually no oxygen present, either, and too much carbon dioxide, so even if the pressure were high enough, we couldn't breathe on Mars without a tank of air or oxygen.

    @@vovindequasahi the blade runner movies are supposed to exist in the same universe as well as the movie minority report which was originally planned to be a direct sequel to total recall. Plus if you consider that there are parts of total recall that don’t involve the main character at all then that itself would mean that it couldn’t have all been a dream because people don’t dream about things from an outside perspective

    I saw this in the theater. Own a DVD copy. Time to upgrade. However I'll definitely reuse the special edition metal case that looks like Mars for a higher resolution copy. Sucks Benny was a traitorous bastard. I have always rejected the idea that everything was just a recall fantasy dream. That would ruin the movie in my opinion. Besides Quaid was dreaming about Melina and Mars before he even went to Recall so she's not a memory implant.
