Well, now you have to complete the Paul Verhoeven trilogy by watching Robocop and Starship Troopers too. The director is the only thing that connects them though, but they are all fun.

Kind of crazy that Michael Ironside was originally cast as the lead in Robocop. Which would have put him in all 3 films.

Yeah...and she edited it out. Just another clumsy, egocentric youtuber.
Quade got everything in the package.. Killed the bad guy, got the girl, saved the planet.. And the Blue Sky on Mars which the tech said was new.... --- The fade to white was Quade waking up..
Benny's betrayal is one of my favorite movie twists ever!
The original story is short and hilarious. Written by Philip K Dick who did 'Blade Runner' (although more snappily named 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"), 'Scanners' and 'Minority Report' amongst others

Philip K. Dick was absolutely brilliant. He wrote a lot about the nature of reality and identity. His fiction--and the movies and TV shows adapted from them--tend to be ambiguous, and while some people understandably want a tidy ending, his real gift was providing a thought-provoking, but vague ending.
A couple of characters deserve recognition for their outstanding contributions: 1) the Best, Most Durable Human Shield award goes to the random guy on the escalator, and 2) the Best Elevator Timing Ever award goes to Melina. She gets two awards for doing it twice, saving Doug's life both times. Interestingly, all of these accolades involve a lifting system, as does Doug literally dis-arming Richter.
"She's just stalling, the little...staller." That totally cracked me up. 😂 I know what you wanted to call her.

Based on a short story, "We can remember it for you wholesale" by Phillip K. Dick (yes, his real name). However there's a scene near the end every woman gets rightly pissed at, I liked your reaction.
Addie, you made me laugh the way you said, "Oh, she's just stalling. The little ... staller!! Lol! I really got a chuckle out of that! Cheers!
The whole movie plays out exactly like the salesman said it would at the beginning of the movie. Melina is the same girl he choose on the monitors. Everything was a memory implant, the dream vacation he paid for.
Lori doesn't just have something against Mars, she has something against Quaid's poor, sore balls. 😄

Fun facts: #1 Sharon Stone played Lori. She's always played a sexy and dangerous woman two years before becoming famous with 'Basic Instinct'. #2 Brubaker, the name Arnold uses when checking into the Martian hotel, was the title and name of a well-known Robert Redford movie. The story Lori and the man tell him on Mars about how it was all an illusion makes no sense after everything she had told him in her apartment on Earth, when she confessed to him that her whole marriage was fake. Other Arnold movies you should watch: 'Conan the Barbarian' (1982), 'Conan the Destroyer' (1984) , and 'True Lies'
"Consider that a divorce"
I loved this movie when it first came out. They created new filming techniques to make this. The scene where you seen the train moving along the rail with the tv screens going on inside, was a miniature of the train with a tiny projector. Everytime I see this I am taken aback at how soothing and out of place Kuato's voice is.
He was an actual spy and then his memory was erased, and given a new one? His visit to Recall messed something up which partially began to give him back his original memories. Something like that.

I feel bad for Dr. Edgemar. He was just asked by the terrifying Agency to talk to a space hitman into thinking he was dreaming, and he got his head blown off for his troubles.💥

10:27 - Addie almost said what we were all thinking...😂😂😂
Arnold is a legend. His comedies are great. Start with Twins, Kindergarten Cop, Last Action Hero if it polls well. The Benny reveal is always a shocker the first time around. Kuato is his conjoined twin brother. And the director Paul Verhoeven directed a couple more awesome movies in Robocop, and Starship Troopers. I love Starship Troopers. Michael Ironsides Richter, Lori's evil boyfriend who lost his arms, was excellent in a very different but very awesome role in Starship Troopers. But you can put that a little farther down your list. Your subscribers and viewers are always going to pitch great movies.
God I fell in love with this movie as a kid when it came on TV one time, the intro theme *immediately* hooked me lol how many times is he gonna say that? I mean c'mon, the man has 4 kids to feed
8:11 he turned into the Terminator! 😱
I subscribe to the theory the entire story is the rekall memory implant. Too many details of the plot are foreshadowed in advance not to have any meaning. Quaid did got what he payed for.
The movie is more literal and less meta than some people think. Everything we were shown actually happened, because if it were merely a memory implant or dream, then we would not have seen anything that Quaid did not, but we did. It's still a trippy mind-f---, but don't overthink it.
The Disney movie John Carter (2012) is an adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs novel A Princess of Mars, one of the first interplanetary romance novels and a founding work in modern scifi. In the novel Mars is an ancient planet which is slowly dying. Life only remains possible because a few atmosphere plants are still in operation replenishing the air supply. Towards the end of the novel one of the atmosphere plants fails when its sole operator dies. Our hero, John Carter, "just happened" to have learned how to open the doors to the plant earlier in the story (Burroughs was a big fan of wildly improbably coincidences), so he goes to restart the plant before the planet suffocates. Just as Carter gets the plant back in operation he passes out and wakes up back on Earth. So, an ending very similar to Total Recall. As the whole Martial secret agent thing wasn't part of the original Philip Dick story, I kinda wonder if the writers "borrowed" from Burroughs here.
Apparently 80s people didn't know: - Mars isn't actually red - Melting ice makes water, not air
20:04 Yes, that is the same face of delight that many of us had at that exact moment.
You mentioned liking book versions of movies in your last two uploads. With that in mind, I recommend the series Black Sails. It is a 4 season show that was written to be a prequil for the book Treasure Island. They did a very good job with both the story and production quality.

yes! "black sails" is in my top ten of all time. it was soooo well done. from the sets, the actors, the plot lines, the dialogue, it was a terrific show. even the last episode wasn't disappointing like so many last episodes are.
This may not be the "best Arnold movie", but it is the "best movie Arnold was in", if that make sense. ;)
the video game based on this movie was really hard. the apartment fight scene took forever to beat.
Total Recall gave birth to the Arnold Gibberish Impression from when his helmet cracks. :D The film was made to go both ways. Real or a Dream. I prefer to think it is all a dream that started moments after seeing Mel on the screen as he laid back in the chair.
You're becoming one of my favourite reactors. You really enjoy films, you understand a lot and are such an empathetic person. Keep doing the great work! Would love to see you react to the Oscar nominated German 80s film "Das Boot". Thanks!

The movie that made me just once as a kid, want to see something like those 3 irl.
Great reaction / review. It definitely has it's surprises in the plot line. This is an excellent example of the works of the author Philp K. Dick. Credit was given him at the beginning of the film. Here are some TV series and other Films based on his works. The Man in the High Castle (TV Series) Electric Dreams (TV Series) The Adjustment Bureau A Scanner Darkly Paycheck Minority Report Blade Runner - this and Blade Runner2049 are based on his book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" -- As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
"NOT THE FISH!" A great, classic piece of sci-fi. I had fun watching your reaction. This was one of the first VHS tapes I bought back in the day 😊

I enjoyed your review. Science fiction is one of my favorite genres. I discovered your channel about half a year ago. Thanks your many insightful and articulate reviews. I'm sure that your efforts are entertaining and informing many people. I know that there's a lot of labor involved in editing these reactions, but your work is appreciated. Keep up the good work, and continue to enlighten us with your clever observations. Thanks!
I think that trips to planets other than Mars (or Earth) are just spaceship cruises that go by them. Only Earth and Mars are habitable, and Mars only barely (for now).
13:58 God bless you, Addie.
Mars actually has a thin, low-pressure atmosphere that consists primarily of carbon dioxide, so technically that is not the vacuum of space just outside of the dome, although by the standards we're used to on Earth, it might as well be. There is virtually no oxygen present, either, and too much carbon dioxide, so even if the pressure were high enough, we couldn't breathe on Mars without a tank of air or oxygen.
That's why I like Action Adventure, never a dull moment, fast paced and keeps you entertained :)
Great reaction thanks. Mos def one of my top 10 films! So much fun!
Douglas got the tracer out from his nose WITHOUT tearing his nostril in half? As much as a fantasy as this is, skin is skin and skin is prone to tearing with enough force.

One of those few movies I have watched many many times over the years, first on VHS rentals, then buying it on DVD and Blu-Ray. It just doesn't get old/boring. A great movie to watch while having snacks that are totally bad for you. Fun reaction too. I would love to see her swear in a video. Not going to happen, but I can still dream.

Addie: "The little staler!!" 🤣😂 🤧 God bless you!
If it's our memories affected what if you go rogue and switch from hero spy to traitorous villain spy? This question would make for a fun twist in retelling story.
I think I almost saw your eyes bugging out like Arnold's did on Mars! 😳 I'm sure my eyes did the same thing when I first saw this movie in 1990. I didn't make those patented Arnold Schwarzenegger sounds of suffering at the time, though. I probably would today.
ANother movie with similar theme is VANILLA SKY with Tom Cruise.
your response to quado was the exact same as mine... "What?"
Remember @Addie Counts the best mindfuck is convincing people they have Freedom. 29:55
Personally, I would've gone with Readhead on the "How do you like your women?" Choice, but that's just me😉
In reality, those goons shooting at Doug's hologram from both sides would have all shot each other dead. You just can't shoot under that situation...that is, unless you are in a movie.
25:49 Addie's reaction to midget violence 🤣
I watched Total Recall (2012 with Colin Ferrell) recently and it had some really cool stuff. The story is more or less the same, but the setting is so different. It's a really cool cyberpunk dystopia. The setting, chase and action scenes sold me on it. The original movie is classic of course.
Identity confusion is typical of a story by Philip K. Dick. His stories are the basis of many films including "Blade Runner" and "Minority Report". And before you rewatch this film I suggest the 2012 remake of the same name with much better effects.
What is fucked up is that this whole movie might just be him living out his dreams as a secret agent. Or real. I love your reaction Addie!

I saw this in the theater. Own a DVD copy. Time to upgrade. However I'll definitely reuse the special edition metal case that looks like Mars for a higher resolution copy. Sucks Benny was a traitorous bastard. I have always rejected the idea that everything was just a recall fantasy dream. That would ruin the movie in my opinion. Besides Quaid was dreaming about Melina and Mars before he even went to Recall so she's not a memory implant.
