Ben got the idea from an old war movie he did back in the 80's. All the leads had to go through bootcamp before shooting & he said they started acting as if they'd actually been to war & knew better than everyone else.

The dead panda bit wasn't originally in the script. At the time, Jack Black was fresh off of Kung Fu Panda, which was projected to make all kinds of money, and apparently, he wouldn't shut up about it. So, Ben Stiller decided they had to work in a way for his character to kill a panda.

The really crazy thing is he actually killed a Panda on screen in a single take. Neither China nor PETA were thrilled, and the production had to pay many hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines as a result. Still, well worth it - the movie just wouldn’t be the same otherwise

You can tell all the actors had an amazing time filming this. Tom Cruise especially, he never gets to act in these kind of roles and he was all in.

This movie shows why so many other parodies fail: it fully committed to what it was trying to do, and didn't pull its punches to avoid criticism. Just comedy gold.

The self awareness of this movie is wonderfully done. Not too far. Full on Hollywood poking fun at itself. Les Grossman should have his own movie

Aside from his roles in The Last Samurai or the Mission: Impossible movies, Les Grossman is my all time favorite performance by Tom Cruise. When I first saw this movie, the scene of him going on that rant against the kidnappers made me laugh so hard and for so long I nearly passed out because I couldn’t breathe.🤣🤣🤣

EVERYBODY wishes Tom Cruise did more roles like this.

“Love Punch Kill” sounds like the sequel to “Punch Drunk Love”.

Both these Ladies are so lovely but as far as emotion goes I have to say that Kristen is on a level of her own,this reaction is amazing..I recommend watching their reaction to "ARMAGEDDON". These two pair up so well I would love to see them with a channel of their own. Lots of love from N.Z.

This is the greatest role Iron Man ever played bruh....I still remember the fact that he literally didn't break character until the end of the actual DVD commentary on the film. Hilarious. RDJ really is one of the greatest, he has all time great comedies, indies, blockbusters, romance movies etc. I'm crying laughing every time he is on screen.

Watching them lose their shit was absolutely hilarious 😂

Tropic Thunder is an action comedy masterpiece. Ben Stiller has only recently gotten more recognition for his directing, but, if he hadn’t directed the action so well and so convincingly, the whole thing falls apart. And everyone one the cast was amazing, especially RDJ. He was nominated for best supporting actor for this too, which wasn’t very controversial back then. That was just before we went from a color blind society to being so sensitive that we are damn near segregated again. He’s talked about accepting the roll extensively on the episode of Joe Rogan he was on. Interesting to here is thoughts about it now.

For clarification, RDJ is playing Lincoln Osiris, Four-Leaf's platoon sergeant. Ben Stiller, as Tugg Speedman, is playing Four-Leaf Tayback.

This is definitely me and my mom's favorite all time movie. We watched this a million times Frfr and never got tired of it not once. And to see Tom Cruise in this was literally the cherry on top. Had me dying laughing every time he showed up and Matthew McConaughey at the end was priceless especially how he took off like the roadrunner or Sonic the Hedgehog into the jungle like he was on something. One of the last big budget/big studio comedies to do it perfectly: cast, concept, and no holds barred writing/directing from Ben Stiller start to finish. Yes, for younger millennial & Gen Z'ers it's a shock filled movie but for those of us film fans that grew up with... 1: Vietnam era war movies 2: movie with in a movie movies 3: risk taking comedy writing to nail the parody and character archetypes RDJ & Stiller & Cruise are great as is the whole supporting cast and other cameos! This film still has gif meme clout running strong today in 2024, especially from Lincoln. I mean Kirk, I mean Robert Downey Jr., "Never go full GOP!" is a recent fave...and yes RDJ never quits character until the ending of the DVD commentary, of which Tropic Thunder has won awards for one of the best DVD/Blu Ray commentaries ever, you have to get a copy and listen/watch it!

Tell you this, I’ve worked in “the biz” doing lighting in Hollywood for 20 plus years, and we ALL (the crew members) share/exchange stories and experiences of working with different actors. I’ve never worked w/ him, and The Scientology aside (gonna leave that alone) but every person I’ve worked with, that has worked with Cruise has nothing but nice things to say about him. And that’s rare in this business to not have heard a bad story/experience about an actor that’s had such a long career. That says a lot.

One of, if not THE, favourite comedy of mine. Really enjoy it, and the commentary of the movie is really funny as well. It's always a trip to watch other people watch Tropic Thunder for the first time lol I remember seeing the ads for it on billboards on my way home from work. I legit did not know that Robert Downey Jr was playing Kirk Lazarus, or on the billboard at the time. Then of course I figured it out after I saw the movie. But also because I hadn't really seen him in a new movie since his drug problems before that, dude really did make a great comeback all things considered!
