** MY VW CAMPER CONVERSION BUILD ** #10 Fitting a POP TOP !!!!!!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Welcome Back Campers,
So today is the much awaited POP TOP video........
This video is the full video of what I did start to finish in the hope that if you fancy a go at your own this will help you at least a little.
Now I will say I have never fitted one of these before and I have only fitted this to how I feel is the best way for my skill level and tooling. You may want to do things differently and that's fine but please please only follow this video as a rough guid as you MUST do all your own measurements and planning. This video will hopefully give you the foundation's you need and the rest is up to you.
My advice is only try this if you are fairly confident you can achieve the end results but don't be afraid to ask a more skilled friends for help. This job isn't the hardest job at all..........
I believe it takes as much guts to pull this off as skill so please be very careful and wear all the necessary PPE. So your gloves, eye defence, ear defence etc.
DONT WORK OUTSIDE WITH POWER IF ITS RAINING..........
I would also totally advise that you cover all the van over with sheets. We was very careful with sparks and directed them into the bus for the very little we used a grinder and I trapped them with a fire proof blanket.
BEST OF LUCK...........
WITH A POSITIVE MINDSET AND OUTLOOK YOU CAN ACHIEVE THIS.
Feel free to contact me on Instagram
All my photos I take and work I do I post on my Instagram and you are welcome to join me!

*****PLEASE READ FOR POP TOP SUPPLIER. ****** UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO RECENT COMPLAINTS ABOUT VERY POOR SERVICE AND QUALITY ISSUES WITH THIS ROOF I NO LONGER RECOMMEND PURCHASING THIS POP TOP. SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL IF YOU PURCHASE ONE AS I RECOMMEND NOT TO. JAY

I would definetly tape the roof after you marked the lines before you start cutting. Ill tape it say 10 mm out from the mark this would allow you to follow the line and create edge when you do paint it after. This will save your van paint from all the metal shards and sparks when you cut. Cheers

The other option for the sealant job is to buy some of those plastic bead forming tools. I love them. Used to have nightmares doing shower re- seals until I got mine. You can get a set of them on ebay etc for a couple of quid. They look a bit like oversize guitar plectrums with curved and straight angled shapes on each corner that make very neat jobs.

I like your attention to detail such as painting the bare metal. Such a pity about the loom not being above the brace at the front but you found a neat way of getting around that problem. I agree about the lower height looking better but as you say it’s not as useable as a bed space. The way pop tops seal around the bottom of the canvas puts me off. I have not seen the way any others seal as of yet but having seen your video I will take a look. Great video thanks.

@@JaysFabShop The UK is so lucky to have so many van offerings per the lower population they have. Is the VW Transporter a newer van model? Looks to be a mid sized van, copied in looks to the old mid size Chevy Astro (RIP 2005). Zero midsize vans on the market across the pond since then. Well, we do have the over priced, expensive to repair Mercedes Metrics, no one buys them. The Transporter would sell like hot cakes here if priced fairly. . North Americans are addicted to useless SUV's. Vans rock, but all we have is the dieing mini-van market, or the much larger new European style vans. A normal chevy full size (only one left) gets worse fuel consumption than my old 1979 chev cargo V8 did,... total joke.

Sure time will tell. Question is Did you manage to adjust the roof on the hingies? I need to move it slightly but stringing with the Weight of the roof as you have to loosen the Botha when the roof is up. Any recommendations how to do it easy ?

@@JaysFabShop It's an absolute joke, why on earth would a van have a pop top if it wasn't a camper van? The insurance on mine was extortionate when I tried to insure it as a car (modified Japanese import minivan), it's currently insured as a camper van in the process of conversion which was less than half the price but I'm gonna have to phone them up and explain that I'll no longer be able to get it re-registered. Hopefully they'll change their classification system after enough people complain but if not I look forward to seeing the range of 'camper van style vinyls' people come up with. Good luck with the rest of the conversion!

Yeah I agree mate. I may do a video on it to be honest but want to learn more about it first. I think a lot of people will Complain. There must be a loop hole created. I’m searching for it at the moment if I find anything I’ll make another video to tell people

Aye the way it's worded makes it seem like there may be wiggle room. I dunno if it was meant to be a clamp down on 'stealth campers' that just went too far but it's definitely thrown a spanner in the works for a lot of people mid way through a conversion

Excellent advice, help, hints and video. Thank you for making the mistakes for us. Did you foam fill the supports after you put in the long black support poles. These are the bits had the 10mm boles poking up into the old support beams, because you worried about the edge of the metal, I wonder if you insulate the roof after you fitted the roof ?

  • @JaysFabShop

  • @JaysFabShop

Hey Simon. I did it on my own. If you use tape then pull the tape along all the bottom of the seal. Then only remove the first couple of inches from one side. Stick that part down in the corner you start from then you can go along holding the seal in place and then peeling the tape cover off as you do and in turn slowly working your way along and sticking it down? Does that make sense
