There's a trick for taking the cap off the Marabu. Hold the bottle in one hand. With the same hand, take your thumb and push on one side of the cap. It comes right off. I learned this from Myriam's Nature.

Great review! And I agree with your order too. One hint for the Marabu caps- a little push on the side of top part of the cone/cap (away from you) will easily remove the cap without the mess. No pulling! It’s similar to the motion of removing a cork from a bottle? More of a push than a pull. Putting pressure on one side easily releases the seal, and, voila! No fuss no muss. I had same inky experience initially but now no more mess. Thanks for a great video; keep them coming!!

Thank you for sharing, however, No matter which brand you are testing when you mix it with alcohol it will be diluted and it dissolves alcohol inks. that is why you can use alcohol to clean up your surface and start over or get back to white paper. If you want to blend you will get wonderful results with blending solution such as the one sold by Ranger. The alcohol breaks down the ink that is why you see particles and rough textures. The alcohol and the blending solution are NOT the same, they perform different functions.

Really helpful video! I started with Ranger but have been curious about the other choices you included. Thanks for explaining why you get some of the effects experienced with each brand.

I see the color separation as a positive in many cases. You can use a single color and get an amazing array of different hues within that one color. The Pitch Black breaks down beautifully.

I am so thankful that you made this video because, being new to the alcohol ink process, you explained a whole heap of stuff that I thought was my inexperienced way of cocking the whole thing up every time I tried it. I have to tell you, you should rebrand or retitle this video to say something like ‘a bunch of reasons your alcohol ink experiments might not be working like the ones in other peoples videos’. I have to admit, I only clicked on this video to see what you called number 1, and didn’t expect all the other, (much more useful), info that you provided that explain why my attempts end up looking like crime scene photos. Thank you so much for this. Now I know I’m only responsible for half the cockups.

I really struggled working with the Marabu inks! I was so curious when I Saw your video what you are gonna day about them - and then I was so surprised you ranked them no 2! I don’t know what I do wrong - they get a texture and don’t fade nicely at all :(

I too love Copic inks, however, now that they have reduced the size by 1/2 and not the price...it doesn't make a whole lotta sense to continue to spend the $$ on them...and of course, I'm now addicted to some of the colors!

Thank you and hello from Michigan!! I became curious about the effects of these inks and decided to try them out...however, as an oil painter I have absolutely NO IDEA where to begin. So of course having been at my local Blick art supply yesterday, I jumped in!😂😂 Thank you for this review! And if you ever need the same kind of assessment of oil paints and the best ways to pump up pigment please reach out to me!! ❤️ ~c

So odd. I especially love the way some ranger colors have multiple color undertones. Especially Pitch black. Though I have to say it's nice to have pinata mantilla black around when I need a flat deep black

I learned a lot from this video of yours and was wondering if you had thought of comparing inks like you did but instead of using alcohol use the blending solution? It sure would be helpful seeing as I have heard there is more water in the alcohol. I bet the 91%, 99%, and blending solution create something different if you did the same thing as far as what surface you used and how many drops you used and where you placed them and how you moved them across their surface. Most of us don’t have 8 different brands to use as a trial test. Shucks, I would be happy to see the top 3-5! Any chance you could show us how it works in a side by side test with both alcohol and blending solution using your top 3-5? You could do 3 and I would be happy in the comparison!!

You keep saying pigment - but other than white, and metallics, there _is_ no pigment in alcohol inks - because they're *dye-based!* If alcohol inks were pigmented, they'd be more opaque, as pigment is insoluble (like mud in water, as opposed to sugar in water) one is suspended, the other dissolves. We'd have to shake alcohol ink bottles every time as there would be sediment sinking to the bottom of the bottle. 😂 One of the reasons alcohol ink is so expensive, is precisely because it's dye-based, not pigment-based - the manufacturing process is different.
