My Ned Kelly Location Video

Ойын-сауық

Over the course of three days I visited as many Ned Kelly locations as was possible. I started with his childhood home in Beveridge all the way to Greta Cemetery where he was finally buried as per his wishes. Edward Kelly (December 1854 - 11 November 1880) was an Australian bushranger, outlaw, gang leader and convicted police-murderer.
One of the last bushrangers, he is known for wearing a suit of bulletproof armour during his final shootout with the police. Narrated, shot and edited by Paul Hagl

    This is simply a location video on Ned Kelly. I only tell the story to give the locations context. I skip over a lot of information and the details I give are from history books and web pages which may not be 100% accurate. I did my best but I am just a location guy and not Ken Burns. I appreciate the difference of views in the comments and always welcome it. All these events took place over 140 years ago. I approached this video as a person who knew nothing about the Ned Kelly story trying to learn about it through this journey. I consider these comments below an extension of that journey. The positive and the negative. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

    Ned would really turn in his grave seeing what is now at Glenrowan today, it being turned into an amusement park. But then again there's not really much happening in Glenrowan these days, being bypassed by the freeway, so I suppose they've got to make a quid somehow. Also you have cleared up a mystery for me as to what happened to Ned's remains. Like everyone I always assumed that he was finally buried in the old Pentridge cemetery, and forgotten, but I guess it is fitting that he was finally buried with his family at Greta, anonymously to stop the camera hounds. Good work, excellently researched video and narrative.

    Only a family story that might or might not be true but the claim is that my great uncle (or perhaps great great uncle) came upon Ned camped in the bush where they shared a drink of tea. Ned is reported as being "a good bloke" but not someone to get into an argument with.

    You’ve missed a bit about what really happened at stringybark, we are from the area. We know what happened as do many. He was only found guilty of one, one murder and that being Kennedy. Only because he took his watch and was found with it basically. Even though the last act, was an act to put Kennedy out of his slow painful death. He was actually found in favour of self defence for the first two shootings. The police were up there with bags under their saddles also. There was no arrests going to be made. Has been stated also by official documents. They found the police camp long before the shoot out. Which was when they noticed the body bags (3) from watching within the scrub. There’s a lot locally that we all know. Official historical documents are also readily available with that information the deeper you look! A lot of common mistruths about stringybark. You’ve done an excellent job covering the locations! And a great video! 👌

    WRONG. Ned Kelly was never charged with the murder of Sgt Kennedy. He was charged with the murders of Lonigan and Scanlan, but the Crown only proceeded with the Lonigan murder charge. Dr. Samuel Reynolds stated categorically that Kennedy was standing upright when he was murdered by Ned Kelly. He was not badly wounded, as Kelly claimed. The police party had two sets of handcuffs with them to secure the two Kelly brothers. Shooting them was never discussed in that police party. Fictitious nonsense. If you claim that was in official documents, present them so we can all see? No sch documents exist. You are just making up lies. Victoria police were never issued with body bags, as you claim. Fictitious rubbish, as usual. As you claim there are official documents supporting your comments. Let's see them?

    Ned Kelly was charged with the murders of Lonigan and Scanlan, and the Crown proceeded with only one. which was enough to see him hanged. He was found guilty of murdering Lonigan not Kennedy. Kelly claimed self-defence, but this was discarded by the jury. Victoria police NEVER had body bags. You are making that up. The police party had two sets of handcuffs with them to secure their prisoners. No official document ever claimed the police intended to shoot the Kelly's. Make up that comment too, did we? There are no historical documents that support your fictitious statements. You have made up a lot of rubbish.

    TOTAL GARBAGE. Ned Kelly was convicted of the murder of Constable Loningan. Dr Samuel Reynolds stated that Kennedy was not badly wounded and received the fatal shot while he was standing erect. Victoria police NEVER had body bags. Made up comment. No such documents exist. Made up rubbish. Ned Kelly was NOT found in favour of murdering Lonigan and Scanlan. More fictitious rubbish from you.

    It's strange how the world turns but within 24 hours of me watching this video, my mother said that she would really like to do a trip through 'Kelly Country' again. I told her that I just watched a location video about it. Originally from Victoria and not that far from the locations (Echuca, Shepparton and Bendigo), and we toured through the 'Kelly Country' many times when I was a kid. Summer tours and winter tours we did but I got to say to feel the real Kelly experience you got to do places like Jerilderie and Euroa in mid-summer to appreciate it fully. And places like Glenrowan in the bitter cold of a Victorian winter. Of course that option will never be available to all. I was just lucky enough to have it both ways many years ago. Back in the days when both chimneys were still standing at 11 Mile Creek...and then some... But if my mother is serious, and I know she is. It will be a winter trip. But I'll have a lot more information at my disposal this time around. It's been a long time. 1986 since I was there. And I really miss having lunch at Billy Tea Rooms in Glenrowan...

But lately, have become quite fascinated. Your video here is a brilliant piece of citizen journalism and documentation - far more informative than any of the documentaries I've watched, and really appreciate the detail and reverence you put into this historic adventure! I am travelling with my son to Glenrowan soon and very much so hoping to stop off the Hume at many of these historic spots and have a ponder. Can't thankyou enough for making such a documentary! The old homesteads being wood succumb to the elements and usually just end up being a brick fireplace. I love Glenrowan , talk about cash in on Ned Kelly. I still remember seeing live enactments back in the 1970’s. Seems to be a lot of regional Victorian towns that have some claim to Ned no matter how small.

    @@echoes1850s If you knew the true story, Ned Kelly gunned down Lonigan as soon as he moved. He also murdered Scanlan while he was on all fours on the ground, trying to stand up. Neither of those officers had a weapon in hand when they were murdered. The murder of Sgt Kennedy was vile. Chasing the officer for 800 metres through the bush and wounding him, he interrogated him for some time, learning he had 5 small children under 10 years of age and his wife was pregnant. He then took a 12 gauge shotgun and at point-blank range blasted the officer in the chest, killing him instantly. No police officer had a weapon in hand when they were viciously murdered.

    I met an older guy while I was on holiday in Qld many years ago, he lived in residential cabins next to the Holiday park I was in, he claimed that Ned definitely was hanged, but Dan Kelly and one other escaped the Glenrowan Inn and ended up in Queensland. He went on to say that Dan was actually related to him (Grandfather I think) and the guy even showed me a period correct handgun that had signs of slight charring, allegedly from the Glenrowan fire. To this day, I have no idea if it was true, or just some bloke spinning a yarn to a then 17 year old kid (I'm now 44) If it wasn't true, the guy was a masterful story teller

    Your comment is not true. Constable Fitzpatrick never went near Kate Kelly. She made up that nonsense 10 months after the visit to the Kelly home by Fitzpatrick. What did Ned Kelly say about that alleged event, which you falsely claim as being true. After Kelly was captured, he was interviewed by a journalist from the Age. “Reporter: Now Kelly, what is the real history of Fitzpatrick’s business? Did he ever try to take liberties with your sister Kate?” Kelly: No, that is a foolish story. If he or any other policeman tried to take liberties with my sister, Victoria could not hold him. (The Age, 9th August 1880) You really need to get yourself up to date with facts, and stop writing fictitious rubbish.

  • @bradwilliams7212
    @bradwilliams721211 ай бұрын

    A few notes for your information. 1. There is no record of Red Kelly ever being in Kilmore gaol. He may have been kept in the local police cells to complete his time. 2. It is probably true that Red Kelly is not buried in that location. 3. James Kelly was found guilty of arson and Justice Redmond Barry, sentenced him to death, which was the only penalty permitted. Barry considered this far too harsh and petitioned the government to alter the legislation to a maximum penalty of 10 years, and to give James Kelly a reprieve to 10 years. The government rejected 10 years and changed it to 15 years. 4. After the house was burnt down, Ellen moved to Wangaratta, then later applied for and was granted the 88 acre settler's plot of land at Greta. 5. Kelly descendants have removed any trace of the old Kelly home, in view of criminal elements taking parts of the old home etc. 6. The charge against Ned Kelly, robbing Fook, was dismissed as there was no interpreter available. The magistrate commended that he believed Fook's story was probably correct. 7. What is often missed here is that Ned Kelly had developed a massive stock stealing 'enterprise' that continued for some years. He was a prolific thief, especially from poor settlers. However, just before the indecent at the Kelly home with Dan, police further north had discovered and torn down his 'empire,' arresting the Baumgarten Brothers and others for horse stealing. A warrant was issued for Ned Kelly at that time, and he was hiding at his mother's home, when the Fitzpatrick affair occurred. 8. Kelly's version of events were all lies, as the evidence shows. Fitzpatrick never went near Kate Kelly. She made up that fiction 10 months after the event. 9. The police murders at Stringybark Creek, were all cold-blooded murder, as the police evidence disclosed. The murder of Sgt Kennedy was particularly brutal. The gang chased him for 800 yards through the bush before Kelly wounded him as he turned to surrender. Captured, he was interrogated for some time. Ned Kelly learnt that Sgt Kennedy had 5 young children under 10 years of age and that his wife was pregnant. The autopsy report given by Dr. Samuel Reynolds stated that Kennedy was standing upright and was not badly wounded, when Ned Kelly took a 12 gauge shotgun, and at point-black range shot the sergeant in the chest, killing him instantly. It was a brutal and unnecessary murder. 10. After the Euroa bank robbery, very little money went to anyone, including his mother and sisters. 11. Kelly sympathisers numbered about 250 persons, who were mostly family, extended family and criminal associates. That was from a population of 14,500, which was about 2% support. 12. What is often missed is that Ned Kelly told the bank manager that he came to Jerilderie to murder both Sen Const. Devine and Constable Richards. 13. There were originally 6 black trackers from Qld, but one died, well before the Jerilderie bank robbery. 14. The first grey sign you filmed stated that George Metcalf was caught in a crossfire. That is not true. Melcalf was shot in the eye by Ned Kelly when he was playing with a stolen pistol the day before the siege. Kelly refused him medical attention, and he died 2 months later. 15. At Glenrowan only 8 Victorian police and 5 Qld black trackers with their white supervisor approached the hotel at 3.15am. When Supt Hare was about 16 yards from the verandah of the hotel, Ned Kelly opened fire, hitting Supt Hare in the wrist. Police returned fire, hitting Ned Kelly in his left arm twice and in his right foot once. Joe Byrne also had a wound to his lower leg. Ned Kelly walked back into the hotel and straight out the back door, walked for about 100 yards, where he dropped his rifle and skull cap. He walked a further 50 yards and lay down behind a large fallen log and remained there until about 7am when he rose and attacked the police from behind. He was brought down by Sgt Steele firing at his legs with his shotgun. That fire fight lasted only a few minutes. Overall, Paul, a pretty good effort. I do point out, however, that there is not a shred of evidence anywhere that Ned Kelly ever did anything heroic during his criminal years. Suggesting he was a hero is a myth.

After the fire, they moved 4 miles from Greta to the Eleven Mile Creek. 5. The old kelly house was still barely standing in 1991. 6. In mid October Ah Fook went to the Kelly home for something stronger than water. Annie Kelly gave him dirty water from the creek. Ah Fook abused her. Ned went to her aid & later was arrested on a charge of assault & robbery. Ned spent 12 days in jail until they found an interpreter named William Tze Hing. Police magistrate Wills discharged Ned. Proved innocent again. 7. Rich squatters constantly stole poor peoples livestock & horses if found wandering on fenceless properties. Poor farmers had to pay a substantial fee to have them released. ned only stole from corrupt rich land owners. 8. Fitzpatrick was a notorious womanizer who got 2 young naive girls pregnant. The records clearly show he had been trying to court Kate for some months. 9. Cops had the latest Spencer repeating rifles. All had side arms. Plus shot guns & ammunition to start a small war. The cops (Strahan, Lonigan) were going around the townships bragging how they would shoot Ned down like a dog. It was reported in the Argus newspaper. This was confirmed in a letter from Superintendent James to John Sadlier in 24th June 1898. H 2909, L.C S.L.V.. If Ned wanted to kill them at Stringybark, he would have just fired first instead of telling them to 'bail up'. According to McIntyres original transcript, Ned only fired at Lonigan after Lonigan raised his pistol to fire at Ned. Kennedy was shot once. It was fatal. No evidence exists that Ned shot him in cold blood. 10. After Euroa it was reported by police that indebted farmers were able to pay off large debts. Family members were coming into town with large notes of cash buying new items etc. The money was distributed to large numbers of the community as reported in the Argus & other newspapers. This was mentioned in the 1881 Royal Commission. 11. A Kings ransom of 8,000 pounds & hardly a person in the entire district wanted this blood money. That is how hated the corrupt police force & courts were held by the people. 12. Total fabricated lie by Williams aka Sam Sabastian. No evidence at all exists that Ned said this. 14. It is beyond contempt for history that Williams/Sabastian could even make up this fantasy. Not worth responding to. 15. The seige would have started 12 hrs earlier but the 4 police who were staying in Aaron Sherritts hut hid under the bed after the outlaws had left. There the cowards stayed until daybreak. Hare arrived with 7 mounted constables in the early morning. After a short round of gun fire, Ned & gang retreated into the Inn. Within hours 2 dozen extra cops & blacktrackers had arrived. Later on, Ned could easily have escaped as he had left the Inn to circle behind the traps. he was already badly wounded & blacked out for a time. When he came to he returned to take on the traps by himself. And so a Legend was born! It is so sad that Williams/Sabastian (a person who even lies about who he is) distorts, twists & totally lies about the real history of the Kelly outbreak & the terrible injustices done to poor people by out of control tyrant cops who were mainly conscripted from the ranks of the criminal class as no real honest man would join that force.
