Australia's most INFAMOUS Jail - A Tour of Pentridge Prison | H Division Tour | Melbourne Revealed Travel Vlog 41
#melbourne #pentridge #prison #travel
For nearly 150 years Pentridge Prison in Coburg, Melbourne was Australia's most feared and infamous prisons. The brutal treatment of prisoners in H Division was like something out of a nightmare. The prison closed down in 1997 but the buildings made out of blue-stone bricks still, for the most part, still stand today.
But today it's very different - in and around the site are apartments, a small shopping centre and the old buildings are built on top of - one is an expensive hotel for example. But some buildings remain as they stood back in the day and you can tour them, and today I take a tour into the H Division (Maximum Security) building. So come along with me as I see what it's like - on the inside!

What an absolute tragedy to do this to a piece of living history. West Australia got it right with preserving Fremantle.

I worked in Pentridge when I was an apprentice electrician back in 1977. The company I worked for was contracted to do some work in there. We mainly worked in A division but also in H division. In A division we were amongst the prisoners but no chance whatsoever in H division. We never even got to see a prisoner as we were only allowed in after they were taken to the yards. Jika Jika became the new high security section. I didn’t realise that A division and H division were actually the same building that had a wall installed to separate them. Only found out after it closed and I did a tour.

Yes it's really expensive to be fair. Which is definitely robbing them of visitors sadly. Thanks for popping by!!

In the 80’s, my year 11 legal studies class went on an excursion to Pentridge. It was a night excursion and it was to see a play the prisoners used to put on. After the show was over, I remember we were allowed to stay a short while and talk to the inmates. It was a very interesting night for sure. I’ve heard after the fact that some of the prisoners asked a few of the girls for their phone numbers. Cheeky buggers lol. Great video! Thanks for showing it to us!

Great vid. Thanks for the shout out. Sorry I missed joining you. I'm concerned I may have felt at home there... with my cell mate, and occasionally more, Bubba! Need to go and see a film there. Looks great. Also, there's a play written about Ronald Ryan. Really good. 🐻👍🏿

sorry to hear these thoughts. I presume the biggest bugbear is the shopping centre and all the apartments around it. It's tough to balance preserving the history with development and where money is involved, I guess development wins most times., thanks for watching

I was a volunteer tour guide in 98 best part time job I ever had,it wasn't painted nice and clean back then when I worked there it was still very much a jail cells weren't that long empty and we had to get it ready for tourists before it opened, was really interesting for me....I grew up near by,next door to Coburg drive in and in the 80s as a kid it was Castle Grey Skull to me....we'd ride our push bikes as close to the wall as we could, the guards would Chuck apples at us and tell us to F off home 😂

@@AndysWorldJourneys I moved to bundaberg QLD in 2007 and haven't been back to the site. Looks like the hospital has been demolished that's a shame, whole place was painted pink inside, even the sinks were pink, they say it had a calming effect but I hated that section,as a guide you were either static or walking around with groups,I was only in there for 3 hrs at a time but that pink got to me..I dont see how it could have worked tbh.

The Old Melbourne Jail is worse. That's where Colin Campbell Ross - the only person executed and later pardoned, was executed.
