    As an English guy I have only one thing to say, Good on ya Ned. The English treatment of the Irish was terrible and the disregard of the common people by the elite still carries on today. A man with his heart in the right place.

    People just don't appreciate how close an Irish republic, North-East Victoria, came to being formed here by Ned Kelly and his other supportive subsistence farmers in this region who reacted the way they did because of the injustices and callous greed of the arrogant large land holders who had the police force in their pockets. They very nearly became the founding fathers of a new country.

    I remember, here in Victoria, years back, at the state library, there was some exhibition to do with Ned Kelly and they had these little souvenir "cute" type dolls of Kelly for sale. I remember, at the time, thinking it was kind of twisted that a government can execute you and then later your image can be recreated as a kind of toy and various parts of the government can then sell these at a profit (the library is run by the state of Victoria). I don't know, it kind of struck me as wrong. I imagine he still has relatives out there and if he was so terrible you had to imprison and kill him, making various commercial ventures from his story and likeness seems a bit wrong - well, to me anyway!

  • @jamesaritchie1

    @jamesaritchie1

    Жыл бұрын

    He has no relatives who knew him, and if someone can't be used like this after so much time has passed, history would be impossible. Seriously, do you really think his likeness can't be sold by the state, or anyone else? Whether the government does or doesn't execute you has nothing to do with it. He's long DEAD, he is a historic figure of some renown, and if people didn't want these "toys" no one would buy them. You really need to grow up and learn some facts about how history works, and how such things promote learning and growing. Really, if you don't like it, don't buy one, but shut up and let the adults have their own conversation about it.

    The fact is a Royal Commission into the 'affair' was conducted in early 1881 & resulted in the sacking of two police Superintendents, a police inspector being retired & several other officers reduced in rank. The charge of attempted murder of constable Fitzpatrick by Ned & his brother Dan was found to be false. Fitzpatrick was later dismissed from the police force on several counts & that he 'could not be trusted out of sight & never did his duty'. The police in the bush were notorious for corruption & lagging innocent men for monetary reward from rich land owners who lost livestock. Any man would do so long as the police got their reward. Many innocent people spent years locked up in hell holes while the police conducted themselves like tyrants - which was also raised in the Royal Commission & was one of Ned's grievances. Just look at the police shooting peaceful innocent protesters in Victoria recently & the brutal way they conducted themselves. Nothing has changed in Victoria.

A big shout out for a kindness he did for myself and my daughter ! Our beloved pet dog Rowdy a miniature pincher who passed away of old age ! We were taking him into the veterinarians to have his body cremated ! Of course we were in tears ! The officers had brought his dog in to have it’s paw seen to as it’s paw was cut !the dog 🐕 was the officer’s partner K9 Patrol !The officer helped us to take our dear pet in by taking him from me and carrying him into the veterinarian office and he stayed with us until all the paper work was done ! @@bradwilliams7212 The fact is a Royal Commission into the 'affair' was conducted in early 1881 & resulted in the recommended sacking of two police Superintendents, a police inspector was forcibly retired & several other officers reduced in rank. It was due to the wealthy members of the notorious Melbourne Club & the rich landowners that persuaded the police Commissioner to ignore the recommendations of the Royal Commission. I had the privilege of speaking with Ern Straughair from Benalla in 1991. This man knew Jim Kelly, Ned's brother. He told me that during the police stakeout on the Kelly homestead, Kate Kelly was raped by the police when she went for a horse ride. She was 15. She went to Melbourne for a 'holiday' (abortion) & at 35, committed suicide due to the trauma.

    I like this story as it seems to be non-biased and fairly honest. Well as honest as history can be! Although Ned Kelly was a bad man he was also a man who tried to do right and yet was pushed in some way or other till he broke and sought the easier option that was unfortunately on the illegal side of life. I do understand why the subsequent future posterity, family members, of the killed police officers despise the Kely gang for what they did I can only hope that they are able to understand how difficult life was on the almost virgin land and how difficult life was for those that tried to tame it.

Hardly doing it hard, were they, if that many succeeded? You are talking rubbish.

As a Bleeding Heart Liberal, I've been a real sucker my whole life for all typed of "causes" but I myself see little here to cheer about. In the 1970's, I despaired at Hollywood movies like "The Godfather" and "Bonnie and Clyde", as well as the more recent HBO production "The Sopranos" because they made criminals look like heroes of some sort. I see the Ned Kelly story as nothing more than that. Stories like this corrupt and confuse the morality of children, and nothing good can come of that. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

    My mother's parents were Beechworth residents, her father was the local Beechworth coach & wagon & horse proprietor, my mum's family had very much interaction with the Kelly family & Neds mother visited my Grandparents house on many occasions, my Grandfather's coaches are displayed in the coach museum in Beechworth, I myself spent many a school holiday in Beechworth, & my Uncle & his family were still in the original family home, I sat in the kitchen where Ned & his brother Dan had been to talk to my Grandfather about rigs for horse drawn vehicles, so I'm very unhappy with the way they treated the Kelly family, SUCH IS LIFE!!! RIP Ned Kelly & mates

    I just saw the new movie with Russell Crowe. Ellen was one hell of a woman! So- why does the movie say she sold him into indentured servitude? The Englishmen that held sway OVER these folks were such a horrific lot. It's 2020 and folks are STILL doing horrible things to eachother. This young man never stood a chance. The Legend of Ned Kelly is a fabulous one indeed-

    We used to go to St Francis church almost every 2nd sunday and other sundays we went to St Joseph's in Port Melbourne. :) Used the catch either the red rattlers trains or i like the blue stripped trains, till the silver ones came into use, which back then were like totaly amazing compared to the red rattlers. :) It took 7 minutes approx from port melbourne train station to get to the end of platform 11 and platform 12 was the st kilda line at melbourne main station. :)

    I dont know what you're talking about. There is no such thing as the "St Kilda line" as St Kilda does not have a train station. The closest train station would be balaclava, but that is on the "sandringham line". Plus, what is a "red rattler"? Lived here all my life and am entirely confused about this post.

    I'am from Benalla Kelly Country. My great great grand mother knew Harry Power he would call in to the family family farm at Myrrhee, from time to time A friend of mine who lives on her family farm at Lurg spoke of her Grand Father who had said that he had met Ned and some of his brother, they would visit a number of local farms buying supplies for their mother, that she would use in her business, the road that the Kelly's lived on was in their day the main road from Melbourne to Sydney. I did some work on a house located at what use to be called Winton Swamp. I think most of the stories regarding the Kelly's are most likely reasonably accurate. The story also extended into other familys in the district who were also part of the Kelly story.
