João Chianca is Brazilian surfing’s next great world title hope but that doesn’t mean life has been easy for the boy from Saquarema. Growing up in the shadow of his older brother, world-renowned big wave charger Lucas, Chianca has forged his own brilliant path in pursuit of greatness. “My Name Is João Chianca” allows the viewer to ride shotgun on Chianca's journey, from the initial high of making the WSL Championship Tour to the crushing low of not making the mid-year cut in his rookie season. We then follow Chianca on his resurgent requalification run, onto his first big Championship Tour win the following year, before he eventually finishes 2023 ranked fourth in the world and qualified for the Olympics.
Disaster strikes in Hawaii before the first event of the 2024 season, as Chianca prepares for the biggest year of his surfing life. Warming up in treacherous conditions at Pipeline, Chianca is knocked unconscious, rescued by fellow surfers and revived by lifeguards on the beach. Faced with his own mortality surfing takes a backseat to rehabilitation and recovery, but as Chianca's physical and mental health return to full strength so does his prowess in the water. We sign off as Chianca sets his sights on gold in Tahiti, with a new appreciation for life, and his friends and family who fill it.

Magnificent! Going through some tough times. Joao's pure love, joy, and wisdom beyond his years is very inspiring. He was an expression of all that before his injury, and moved even deeper into his beautiful inner self after. This documentary is extraordinary! So grateful. Whatever he does from here, wish him all the best. He doesn't need to prove anything, he already has...and we all benefited. Blessings to his family.
