My Honest Review of Basque Movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

I spent a day watching movies in Euskara, the Basque language, and here is my honest review of them. It's rare to find Basque movies with English subtitles, so I wanted to share with you what movies from the Basque Country are available for streaming in the United States. I talk about Handia / The Giant, Errementari / The Blacksmith and the Devil, and Loreak / Flowers. The first two are currently on Netflix US and the last is on Amazon Prime Video.

Did you know that the euskera used in Errementari is based on the euskera that was used many years ago in Araba? I mean, if you didn't understand some things don't worry, because sometimes it was a "strange" euskera xD (If someone who speaks english better than me wants to explain this a bit better, please do it xD)

Right! And they say that the Euskera from Araba was the euskera that "moved" to Bizkaia and became its dialect (modified) in time.

That's awesome to know! Because yes, I did have much more trouble understanding the Euskara in Errementari, although I think I picked up on some hika. Very cool.

It was really interesting to hear your opinion (mine is very different 😁) and Basque movies are 100% "European". We love sorrow, pain, rain, snow and misery ... we are an Atlantic culture/people after all. Its a pitty you couldn't see "Amama" which I think its the best movie in Basque language so far. But again its not a romantic-comedy but a superb drama about the ending pf the traditional farm life in the Basque Country with a really beautiful sad-happy ending. Comedy in Basque is usual but more in theatre and tv series but very local humour, hard to get abroad, unfortunately. In Estonia all my friends lived Errementari and Amama. They are definitely movies easier to get by Europeans of any kind than for Americans (even if they have Basque roots). But you pointed out something very important, the lack of English subtitles in Basque movies/documentaries. For political/social reasons the once upon a time 100% Anglophile Basque Country intelligentzia was cut from the world after the fascist uprising and every attempt to make Basque Country more English speaking and anglosaxon oriented has failed. Despite our historical connection to Ireland and absolute love for Scotland and our USA links/roots. Manybof us think that the only way to preserve Basque language is to mske English our second language. I hope the Basque film amateurish 😀 industry watches this review. I have sent the link of your review to Paul, Errementari's director and really cool guy :)

You're right. Basque stories are often sad. We live in a post-modern environment, disappointed, where we recreate the bad destiny that has touched us, etc. It also occurs partially in the literature. I also hope that sometime we will produce a film in positive Basque, with a happy ending where Good wins ;-) "Aupa Etxebeste!" is a good comedy in Euskera, but I am afraid it is not still in Primevideo.

Haha yes I think I'm too brainwashed by American happy endings and good always winning. I didn't realize how much I expect movies to be that way until I spent a day watching these Basque films. I've heard great things about Aupa Etxbeste! and I hope to improve my Euskara enough to one day be able to understand it.

I discovered Aupa Etxebeste a few years ago when I was in the Basque Country, as my last name is Echeveste! I've watched it and it's a little dark for a comedy. The sequel, Agur Etxebeste!, came out last year, I believe. I enjoyed that one more than Aupa Etxebeste. I'd lend you the DVDs for either, but the subtitles are only in Castellano.

Hi Anne Marie, Thank you so very much for putting in the time and effort to host your shows. I give you a 10 for doing this. I have watched Elementaria (sp) twice and liked it very much. I liked the story line, the cinematography, the humor and the directing and editing. I don’t ask much from movies other than entertainment. Tomorrow I’m going to watch Flowers. Always wishing you well.

I really enjoyed Errementari! I was a bit reluctant to watch it at first for the same reasons you mentioned, as horror movies aren't really my thing. I also felt similarly about Handia.

The baztan trilogy is amazing on Netflix. Although it mostly in Spanish, there are parts in basque. And they are So So So good. A cool part of the basque country to learn about for me too. Scenery was awesome. Handia, i didn't enjoy either.

About Errementari, the calification of Netflix is just a joke..is not a terror film! Is a fantastic film based in Basque traditional tale , is a fantastic film 100% in Basque and the first long film od his director, Paul Urkijo who is preparing a second one, the most important is that director pretend make films based in our mitology, legends and history and fully in Basque! I wach Errementari on zinema and I got the cinema's original poster at home, be sure that wen a new film of this director is shared i go to buy my ticket's . The other two films are so sad for me..not bad..bad sad! And life is enougth about sadness lol Agur bero bat Euskal Herritik!

It's a pity Kutxidazu Bidea Ixabel isn't subtitled. It's a comedy/romcom from the 2000s that's a lot more chill and less dramatic than the ones you watched (which are also good! Don't get me wrong)

Oh so sorry you didn't like Handia. For me it was just as depressing if I'm honest, such a sad story. But a real one. I imagine I liked it in a way that I could get in touch with the roots of basque way of life and of course because as a child I grew up knowing the almost legend of "Altzoko Handia" (the giant from Altzo, a little Gipuzkoa'n town). Besarkada bat! And sorry for my english!

I think these 3 movies are really good, a lot of foreign people have enjoyed them but they are not for everyone's taste... we lack a real industry to produce more appealing movies :( I am still waiting for anybody making something similar to "Black Books" series. That type of comedy is so so "basque" :)
