    @@CrabCentralStation Yeah at least I hope he is. He went down to molt about a month or so ago and I moved house while he was doing that so I wonder if that threw him off with the sudden temp change, even though I did everything within my power to keep the tank warm. After the month was up he came back up super pale and lethargic and despite the large menu that was supposed to help him he showed no interest and buried himself again, I have another crab that digs a lot and he was in a close spot underneath the substrate so I wonder if he scared the other one out of the shell maybe?

    @@CrabCentralStation Me too! We actually got him and two of his buddies at a little beach shop for my 4 year old a couple weeks ago, then found your videos after searching how to care for them and found several videos on how they were sourced and I felt just awful. After getting to know them, I’ve come to realize that they actually have feelings and personalities! They have come to trust me and will peek out now snd don’t get scared as easily. They’ll eat in front of me now too, and come up to the glass and chill with me. Lol. When I discovered that Lizzie had left her shell, I nearly panicked! But remembered what to do, and had my supplies readily available. When I laid the spoon down to scoop him up, he climbed on and worked with me to get him up on the spoon. Then covered him up with his two choices and original shell, and he chose to go back into his original shell...once he was back into the tank with his buddies, he started checking out other shells at the shop...so I’m guessing he’s going to change soon. I added some more options to help him make up his mind too. And yes he’s a he named “Lizzie” 🤦🏻‍♀️ Named by my four year old bc his original shell has a lizard painted on it. The only options they have for new shells are natural, so I’m really hoping that he changes soon. The other two already have. Just waiting on Lizzie to make up his lil crabby mind. Lol 😂

    One of our crabs came out of the shell about 10 minutes ago and my husband told me to look and see if there were any videos on what to do if this happens, and yours was the first to pop up. Oscar is looking very weak and I'm not sure if this will work, but I'm praying it does. We've had our crabs for almost a year, and are trying to get their tank upgraded because they need more space and a few things we couldn't get right away. Thank you for this very informative and encouraging video. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

    Now, I have one more question. Lol. How many times is my hermie going to shell shop, until he picks one? He recently came up from molting, now he continuously changes shells, then goes back to his old one. He has tried 3 other shells, in the past 24 hours. I can't tell if this is a good thing and he's excited, or a bad thing and he doesn't like any of them.

  • @CrabCentralStation

    @CrabCentralStation

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hermit crabs can be picky! If you think about it, shells are hard to find in the wild. It’s extremely competitive for shells. So, for a crab to change shells they have to make sure that they are going to like that shell because they will be stuck with it for a while. It’s still part of their natural instincts to do the same in captivity. So he probably is just trying to decide which shell he likes best, before he gives up the shell he is already in! 😊

    We use glass lids on all of our tanks. We have a local glass maker cut it to the correct size. It's more affordable to do that than buy them, we have found. You definitely need a lid that covers the whole tank and keeps the humidity in.

    @@CrabCentralStation Unfortunately I think this crab may have been in cramped conditions for too long before arriving at my place. I don't think that the molt is supposed to result in the crab doubling its size is it? Getting a bit bigger yes, but this was drastic. I think the problem was in the abdomen because a grey spot developed which just kept spreading and the poor little guy didn't make it. He ate his exoskeleton before the grey spot developed but failed to choose a new suitable shell. He probably had internal injuries :(

    @@CrabCentralStation I have 3 crabs in a large tank. My oldest one (18 years old) was buried for a month molting but I had to change out the sand in the tank. In the process of doing that, I had no choice but to uproot my molting crab, but did so quickly & buried him a few inches down. Several hours later my crabie was on the surface & naked! I followed your instructions & it helped. I did put my crab in a separate tank however, & he/she is back in a shell, but looks pale, & probably still moulting. I kept my crab in the container with a bit of water & shells in the seperate tank, & am wondering if I should take crabbie out of the container & put more sand into the reserve tank so he/ she can rebury & continue moulting? I blame myself for the stress I caused crabbie by unearthing him/ she in the first place but had to change the substrate in the main tank. The video says there would be a video about hermit crab harvesting in the description, I know it's a Peta video and they are more often exaggerated, than helpful, but I still wanted to watch. Did you remove the link as it was exaggerated/misinformation, or?

    Hi! So sorry the link is gone. We recently updated our descriptions and it must have gotten missed. Here is the link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l42s1rSsY6vNZbA.html We do not agree with PETA on a lot of their activism. However, we do know that what takes place in this video is true because we know someone who lives in Indonesia who has been to one of these hermit crab wholesale distributer sites. He has first hand experience to seeing the mounds and mounds of dead crabs at these places.

    Hi it's been over 10 hours and my hermit crab still hasn't gone back into its shell. I found it sitting in front of the glass naked and I couldn't find the shell that it was using previously (it wasn't anywhere nearby). I've isolated it in a separate container with a little bit of water and 6 shells to choose from, with a towel covering the container like your setup. I'm not sure what to do... should I put my crab back into the tank and leave it be? Or should I keep him isolated for as long as it's naked? I'm not sure if it'll go back in at all... I had a similar incident a month or two ago with another crab, and it went back in successfully within an hour with this technique. My crab is also missing a couple of limbs, as well as its small left claw (not the big claw), and its abdomen is quite transparent, which makes me think that it was molting. What should I do? Edit: I've had my 9 crabs for over a year without much issue, apart from these two incidents.

  • @CrabCentralStation

    This could be a surface molt! Keep the crab separated in an isolation tank! (Tupperware with an inch or two of sand and eco and some moss, water, food, lots of shells) if the crab is missing limbs, it could also be passing. Please keep us updated!

    Yes, they usually stay in their shell when they molt. We have had a surface molter before. If that happens, the crab needs to be isolated in their own tank or container.

    The substrate should never have to be changed. Assuming you have the correct 5:1 sand to ecoearth ratio, and you have no bug/fungal outbreaks, the sand is good for years.

We come home after like 3-4 hours and we can’t find my sisters crab.. we dug everywhere and we can’t find it. Her shell isn’t in the tank either so she couldn’t have molted. We checked everywhere because we don’t have a huge tank for our crabs. It’s a decent size. But does anyone know where she can be?

    I watched this video Monday night after t er seeing an exoskeleton hanging on an empty shell and seeing another shell beside it with just a claw visible. I got scared thinking my hermie was dead in the shell that showed a claw. Tuesday morning I checked the tank and found a naked hermit moving about! I followed the instructions from the video the previous night. Waited an hour (late to work) and it still hadn't reshelled. When I returned from work 8hrs later he still hadn't reshelled so I replaced one of the 3 shells with one that was shaped like the one he came out of. Hour by hour I checked...no reselling done. This morning I checked again...still naked. This evening I checked again when I got in from work. It appears that it has reshelled but the shell is on its back and I can see the hermit's claws and antennas. Do I remove it from the emergency bowl and place it in the tank or give it a few more hours in the emergency bowl? The shell looks like it's too big for him/her.

    A crab must be in a shell to survive. So, if a painted shell is the only option, that is better. However, it is best to have a variety of natural shells for them to choose from. Check out Facebook marketplace for people selling shells for cheap - maybe even garage sales or resale shops.

  • @CrabCentralStation

    @CrabCentralStation

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you have a crab molting you will need to isolate it with its exoskeleton in a separate container. 1. Put a little but of substrate in the container. 2. Carefully ace the mating crab in the container with the exoskeleton. 3. Place a lid with holes poked in it for air exchange. 4. Place the container in the mail tank so that the crab has heat and humidity. 5. The Crab will need to stay in the container until most exoskeleton is eaten. When the crab becomes actively walking around. The new exoskeleton has gained color and is hardened. Then you can put them back in the main tank.

    Hopefully your crab has simply re-homed into a new shell! This often happens after a molt. Sometimes they come up, change shells, and then go back down again! There is a chance that your crab was attacked by another crab while molting, or simply had a bad molt. But for now lets think positive and give the crab a little bit more time to resurface!

    Absolutely! This is why crabs need pools deep enough to fully submerge in. They keep water in their shells to keep their gills moist. They also use shell water when molting. However, if your hermit crab leaves the shell, it is an emergency and you will want to follow the steps in this video.

    hello, thank you so much for the videos! i thought this would be the best place to reach out to since i see you're very active in the comment section; i got two small hermit crabs yesterday. currently still in the 1 or 2 gallon carrier i bought them in at the beach store, buying a 20 gallon terrarium asap. i'm doing my best to keep them happy right now in the little tank, got some calcium sand, a little climbing toy, they've got a little bowl of water and i spritz lukewarm water to keep the place humid, im chopping up veggies and fruits for them, and i got high quality hermit crab food for them as well. all is going well, but i have a few questions for when i get a larger terrarium. 1. i read online that i shouldnt give them pools deep enough to submerge themselves or they would drown. that directly contradicts what was said in one of your videos. i honestly trust you guys but i just wanted to make sure it is absolutely ok for them to have two proper pools! 2. is calcium sand ok? im gonna buy some of that eco earth coconut fiber to put on the top layer and mix it in a little bit for the flooring of their tank. is that alright? do they need anything else mixed in? 3. it is stated that shellfish must be boiled before feeding them to hermit crabs. i bought a little can of brine shrimp, nothing on the can indicates that i should boil before feeding. should i or is it safe? 4. how do i clean out the flooring? is there some sort of sifter i can get or do i need to replace the sand often?? that would be very costly. thanks so much!

    Hi! Hopefully I can help! So the deep pools is okay they just need something they can climb on and out of all around the pools. What I did is I got sand and the eco earth and mixed it with a little bit of water BUT if you just want sand make sure once a week or once every 2 weeks you move the sand around to have the new sand from the bottom to the Top. Also I researched this before getting my carbs so hopefully this is all correct and it helps you out!

    Hi! Sorry for the late reply. I wasn’t notified of your comment! To answer your questions: 1. Because hermit crabs have modified gills they can actually stay under water for hours. We’ve had hermit crabs completely submerge in the water for upwards of 4 hours. They know when to get out so as long as you put a way in and out of the pools, they’re totally ok! They need the deep pools to fill their shells with brackish water to keep their gills and abdomen moist. 2. Calcium sand unfortunately is not safe. When it gets wet it hardens, and like I stated earlier, hermit crabs keep water in their shells. If the sand gets in their shell it can harden trapping them inside. 3. Shellfish does need to be cooked, however these brine shrimp aren’t raw so you can feed as they are. 4. You only need to clean out the substrate if you have a fungal, bacterial, or algae bloom, as well as ants/other protein eating bugs, or other emergencies. This is if you have the 5:1 ratio of play sand to eco earth that’s at least 6 inches or 3 times your biggest crab. The poop will be broken down into the substrate. However, if you want to pick up the top of the substrate that’s fine. If you do decide the substrate needs to be cleaned just make sure you have no hermit crabs molting and then you can scoop out the substrate and replace it. Hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions! 🐚🦀

    Crab Central Station oh wow, thank you! that was actually super helpful, i'm really grateful! i've moved them into the new tank, no calcium sand actually, i've gotten them play sand and EE coconut fiber, somewhat even mix of both. i'm glad i decided not to go with the calcium sand lol. and its good to know that i dont need to clean out the substrate often, i feel like that'd be a super big pain to do often lol. thank you so much again!

    Help! My crab seems to be getting in and out of the same shell. He's going into the saltwater out of his shell and then returning to his shell later on. For some reason I think that my crabs have gotten into a shell-changing spree. Any ideas?

    Hmmmm... this behavior is alarming. If your crab is without a shell, follow the recommendations in this video. Unfortunately, when crabs continue to leave their shell and seek saltwater, it's not a good sign. Hang in there and do the best you can. I hope your little buddy pulls through!

    Hi I don’t know what to do right now. I have watched this video before but this happens today I got home looked in my crab tank and found that one of my crabs had no shell so I did everything I remembered to do. After that he went into his shell I walked out of my room for a while came back in checked on him and he was no longer in his shell and he was just sitting in the water bowl completely underwater. I got him out put him back in the container and watched this video again he is refusing to go into any of the 4 shells I have for him. There is really nothing I can do anymore he just wants to be without a shell sitting in the saltwater pool I don’t think he is very happy with me keeping him in what is basically a jail for him. Do you know anything I could try to keep him in a shell?
