    🚨 Important Hermit Crab Care Update🚨 In the past, raw honey has been seen as a “healing food” for sick or injured crabs. Through research, the Land Hermit Crab Owners Society (LHCOS) has realized that this is a misnomer and there is no such thing as a “healing food”. All safe foods for hermit crabs are beneficial and necessary for the health of your crabs. From LHCOS Mods: “Honey is unnecessary and can be dangerous to ill, dehydrated and stressed out crabs. Legs get stuck and are dropped. Gills get clogged up and that's how they breathe.” We are no longer recommending you feed pure raw honey to your hermit crabs as a food source for the reasons above. It is too dangerous. This does not mean it is poisonous if eaten, but the sticky nature of honey can hurt the crab on the outside. Bee pollen can be used as a substitute for raw honey. We have recommended people to feed raw honey in the past, but part of owning an animal is updating your methods as new research comes out. It is our job to keep you updated as well on new research and findings. Caring for animals is not linear. It is constantly changing and so we have to constantly work to improve the care we provide for our animals.

    I just got my Hermie a week ago and was feeding him pellets, as soon as I finished the video I gave him some banana, apples, and raisins and he immediately came out and started eating, and when I went to readjust his plate so he didn't have to move too far he didn't completely hide like he has been. I plan to make a big shopping trip for him asap, but I'm so happy that I now know what's best for him!

    I’m so glad I found this channel. Our first hermit crab ate her partner and we didn’t know why. Now we understand what happened. We have been adding more variety to their diet. Asian supermarkets carry various dried seafood. We were able to find quite a selection including, but not limited to; dried kelp, dried seaweed, dried fish, dried shrimp. You just need to watch out that they are naturally dried without any added salt. After changing their diet, we had two hermies (as we call them) molt and the third is on its way. Thank you for the information.

    yeah, I did some research before I got my first little guy but not nearly enough. honestly looking back, it's a miracle he survived. he actually managed a successful molt when about 1/3 of the substrate (which definitely wasn't close to deep enough) was gravel. he's tiny and very tough (also very friendly with both people and other crabs). now he's living the good life, he's coming up near the end of his molt in over 6 inches of nice moist substrate and life is good. you live and you learn. :)

    This is awesome! I was surprised 4 years ago when I got a hermit crab from my grandma. She gave me a super tiny plastic tank with gravel, told me to give them fresh water and gave me “hermit crab food.” I thought it died because it was so inactive so my mom rushed to the store, bought a 10 gallon tank kit and bought another crab. As I grow, I bring better care as my goal to be a zookeeper grows alongside me. I have 2 who are still in a 10 gallon but I hope to upgrade ASAP. They are constantly active but one is molting now. I hope to give them a 70+ gallon tank and to adopt multiple from the hermit crab association on Facebook. The crabs just switched shells too! Thank you so much! This is the best hermit crab video I ever watched! You guys are so straight forward and aren’t promoting trashy food! You get a sub from me! Please make more crab videos like some good tanks 30 gal and larger or something. Thanks!!!

    It's cool that a lot of the fresh foods (and powders, grains, grasses) are the same as my parrot! I have been chopping a smaller portion for our new crab, but am gradually accumulating other crab specific ingredients over time. Looking out for any preservatives, sodium, or other seasoning/additives. Thanks so much for the info!

    I don’t have a real hermit crab but a big rubber one named Frank. I’m still fascinated by the care of these animals and watching just to learn. I did as a kid have gold fish and two red slider turtles and my brother had a lizard. Seeing the cuttlebones mom used to have one for her canary. I watch a lady who has frogs, toads, newts, lizards. It’s quite interesting. Anything with pet care I love to watch.

    I just bought two hermit crabs and didn’t realize I had to have the tank together. I also didn’t know about the salt water. I ordered everything I needed for them the night I brought them home with me. The aquarium will be here in 3 days. I am now feeding them fresh food. Threw out the pellets. I also didn’t realize they crawled so much. Bough t them all kinds of toys to help them exercise after watching your KZread channel. I know I didn’t start out so well and I hope they hang in there till I get their things together in the next few days. I love these guys and can’t wait till I find out their sex so I can name them!!

    I know this has nothing to do with crabs but I’m a cat owner and one time dog owner and I had to learn what to feed and what not to feed. Same when I had a rabbit and Guinea pigs. Things have improved. Now we have videos. In my time you had to get care books on the animal you get. Proper nutrition is definitely important and even though I’ll never have hermit crabs, knowing all this is so interesting. pet care is an ongoing journey. I’ve had cats for 43 years and still learning something new with maintaining health and food.

  • @CrabCentralStation

    @CrabCentralStation

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great questions! Thanks for asking! We feed them fresh foods daily (usually in the evening since they are nocturnal) and remove what is left the next day. Fresh foods get moldy quickly and can cause bugs if left too long. We have dehydrated/dried foods that we leave in the tank and just switch out every couple of days. We also have staple items in the tank at all times (worm castings, green sand, leaves, bark, moss, millet, cuttlebone). You just want to hit all the different categories throughout the week.

    Hello 👋, to prepare leaf litter; 1. Make sure it is safe (www.crabstreetjournal.org) 2. Gather in an area that is not sprayed with pesticides 3. Wash/soak in prime treated water 4. Bake at the lowest temperature your oven goes to until the items are completely dry Or Freeze for 48 hours and air dry before adding to your tank Hope this helps! Thanks for watching 😁

  • @CrabCentralStation

    @CrabCentralStation

    3 жыл бұрын

    Take a look at this nutrition guide: crabstreetjournal.org/download/hermit-crab-nutrition-table/ This chart lists the specific requirements of different vitamins and minerals that the greensand contains. On the chart, there's a reference for each one listed that would give you specifics for each of those. Giving the greensand as an addition just ensures that there isn't lacking with what is offered vs their needs because they can't communicate those. It's like offering a multivitamin alongside a healthy diet. Is it 100% needed for survival? No, but it is something that works as a supplement for a proper varied diet. Hope that helps!

    Crab Central Station Crab Central Station hey I’m not sure if you’ll see this, but I have a question. You went into great detail of what to feed them, which I appreciate, but how often do I feed them these things? Do I just mix stuff on this list? Or for example, do they need more protein than veggies. Thanks for the info.

  • @CrabCentralStation

    @CrabCentralStation

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! They need protein the most out of all of the food groups. Feed that daily. As for the other ones, we try to feed all of the food groups daily if we can just to make sure they’re getting what they need. But they can be rotated. As long as they are getting a variety of foods each day and not the same 3 foods daily, they should be ok! You can rotate the food groups around as needed. Calcium is also very important so we keep it in the tank at all times! Hope this helps
