I learned a terrible lesson when I had two hermit crabs. I knew they outgrow their shells so I went out and bought an assortment of beautiful shells for them to select when needed. The larger of the two finally decided it was time to move to a new home and when he slid out of his shell the smaller hermit killed him and took his old shell for his new home. Freaking murderer.

The somewhat disturbing part is that their shells are practically heirloom. They get re-used by younger crabs over and over. You could essentially create your own population of hermit crabs that end up having only metal shells. Edit: I'm in no way or form affiliated with the Hermit Crab Revolutionary Army, or their subsidiaries, and I do not endorse human endowment of nigh-impregnable armor. Thank you.

Fun fact: hermit crabs will actually gather in circles and trade shells with each other. Those who have grown too big for theirs will pass it down to a smaller crab, and that one will pass its shell on too. This means that even when Randy gets too big for his shell, he’ll probably pass it down to another crab who will then become the apex predator of the ecosystem, ruling the seas with an iron claw.

Here’s something that can change your way of life or thinking. This is the most important thing you will hear/read today. If you’ve told one lie, stolen anything, or lusted (which is adultery of the heart), you’ll be found guilty on Judgment Day and end up in Hell. But there’s good news: Though we broke God’s Law, Jesus, the prophesied Messiah, perfectly kept the Law, fulfilling all righteousness. He paid the fine for sinners ( that we could never pay ) by suffering and dying on the cross-absorbing the wrath of God that we deserve. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.” Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. Today, repent and trust Jesus; God will grant you forgiveness and the gift of eternal life. God Bless

Hermit crabs are very delicate, and they belong in porous calcium shells, not metal. I once researched it about fifteen years ago, because I wanted to have a bunch of hermit crabs and paint their shells and all that, but I found some websites that warned that paints can block the pores in the shells and the hermit crabs will start losing legs and stuff. Hopefully the hermit crabs will leave the metal shells before the shells harm them. Maybe do some research before treating animals as toys.

More than likely, the crab only swapped to the metal shell because it was the only provided option and it was outgrowing the old one. It will almost certainly abandon this fancy metal shell the second it finds a suitable, natural one in the wild. Hermit crabs like their shells to be porous, which is why if you purchase the painted ones from boardwalk shops and then offer them an unpainted shell of the same size, they will almost certainly *immediately* switch to the unpainted. There's lots of pictures online of hermit crabs wearing unusual objects as shells, but they only do this out of desperation.

One cool thing I know about hermit crabs is that they cooperate in the wild. If someone outgrows their shell or needs a new one, a whole group of them will line up from largest to smallest and swap their shells to make sure everyone has one that fits.
