@@Crownerasedin a way he’s not wrong. If they put it back in the water with no shell it’ll be eaten very quickly by a fish or other marine life because it’s not in a hole to protect itself. Also those orange slice looking things are his old gills and his new ones need the water so the crab is just suffocating and drying out.

  • @ChrisVoiceman

I think the most surprising thing to me is that it left its gills behind in its old shell. Imagine having to grow a whole new pair of lungs every time you have a growth spurt.

Patch Notes ------------------- Max HP - Increased DEF/Armor -Decreased Attack Power - Decreased Movement Speed - Decreased HP Regen - Increased EXP Gain per Level - Increased Temporary nerf, but will ultimately be a net buff after farming some EXP and leveling up, as long as it's able to avoid higher level PvP players until it completely regens. Overall, still a decent class to play, but I do worry about it's performance in the current meta since it does not appear to be playing on an aquatic server at the moment.

FYI it can't do this faster as the new exoskeleton (aka the soon-to-be new shell underneath the old one) is still soft and slightly gelatinous. Once it hits air it hardens right up (which is why some crabs like to do this whole thing whilst outside of the water)but either way, when the crab's body is ready it will send out a kind or lumphatic fluid between the older layer and new layer

This is actually how they regrow their limbs inclusing claws. They have to molt so that the new arms can take place. In fact, this is the method for softshell crab farming. They cut the claws, forcing the crab to molt, then they catch it while their shell is still soft.

Poor crab. It's stressful for them to molt underwater. Doing it out of water has to be even more so. Blue crabs need a lot of oxygenated water, molting out of that makes things more difficult.

Notice how the crab is all soft and fleshy during molting process. This is so it can wriggle out from its rigid exoskeleton. It's basically shelling itself, just without the steaming and the butter part.

I always imagined it was the other way round - with it being the top half that was molted - done some crabbin growin up in fla and caught a few "soft shells" before and was told they were in molt, that they shed their shell, never expected it was like that - it looks like they abandon the bottom half lungs and all - something tells me this is the first half of the molt, the second part being when the crab exits the top shell. Thanks for posting.

Yes!! It took me a full minute to understand that the living crab wasn't the one toward us! I was horrified because I saw the eyes moving on what I thought were the remains, and it also looked like it didn't have a roof and that the internal organs were pulsing!! The crab legs seems very soft (which seems necessary to squeeze out of the previous shell) but I wonder how much time it takes for everything to harden. It must be a very vulnerable situation for the individual Edit : just saw another comment that said it takes weeks
