The sad reality is people keep animals in super small habitats because pet stores sell and market these super small habitats. People assume the store wouldn't sell it if it wasn't appropriate. They put too much faith in our corporate overlords.

My son has been asking for a hermit crab and I was like why not? so I looked up hermit crabs saw your videos...and now I know why not! he will not be getting a hermit crab unless we find someone who wants to rehome theirs.. and can provide it a better life.. I was absolutely horrified to find out that they are all taken from the wild and treated horrifically😓😢😭

Thanks so much for this video! I used to have hermit crabs, and they weren’t given adequate care. Even though it wasn’t as bad as this, and they still had salt water and freshwater bowls, they were fed a crappy diet and now I feel so bad. They were in little painted shells, so when my hermit crab tried to change shells my other hermit crab stole her shell and she died. I feel so for this, so I have made it my goal to help my friends who have hermit crabs to provide them with adequate care in Pinkie Pie and Justice’s honor. Thanks so much for this video, I hope a lot of people learn from this!

I agree with you all these tiny abusive tanks and cages sold for animals are so wrong and should be illegal. It's basically like locking a kid in a closet forever. Also I'd love to see more bad cage reviews like this especially since PetSmart released a horrible new line of cages

It goes perfectly with the wild caught, traumatized hermit crabs that were forced out of their shell then forced to go into or get glued into a toxic painted shell that they sell with these useless tanks. Great video!

Thanks for your videos! We made the mistake of buying hermit crabs at a beach store and then bought this exact enclosure. (didn’t know any better) now I’ve bought an aquarium for them and will be returning this contraption. I found you by trying to learn how to care for them and I have learned so much!

IT MAKES ME SO FREAKING SAD! I had a crab who died and i was crazy upset... how many died and the owners didnt care??!! its insane. I gave another crab a home soon afterwards because i still had Arwin and they need to be in groups or pairs. I have a nice big tank too, and i’ve spent almost $100 total for everything. Whenever i get money i buy something new to improve the crabitat. I wish there were fewer impulse buyers and more people like us crab lovers who actually care for them and are willing to pay to keep them safe and happy!

Yesterday morning I woke up to find one of my crabs changed shells....today I woke up to find he went back into his old shell 😕 why?

This video is honestly so true! This "cage" for hermit crabs is absolutely too small and honestly will kill your hermit crabs. The only use we have ever had from these are when we are adopting more hermitcrabs and have a short drive home. Even then we put ecoearth, not gravel that will dry out your hermit crabs and is equivalent to snails and salt. We also put hides and plants. And this is only for a drive home after adopting! We never, ever would keep any animal in any circumstance in one of these tanks and it is equivalent of a person living in a coat closet.

Craft Diply Coconut fiber is the best!! Cheaper (AND LIGHTER OMG) than sand, its soft, biodegradable so you can throw it on the flowerbed when its old, and my crabs love digging down into it. Think of your favorite soft blanket. Thats the hermit crab version. I use the same stuff as she does and its awesome!

dont tell about the turtle lagoons... im both a crab mom and a turtle sister, this is distressing enough! We keep our roscoe in a big tank with bubbles and a pump and we clean it and hes a happy boi. my crabs have a big tank with good substrate shells and mini plants for cover, plus food and waters. They a happy boi and happy girl. YEET! its embarrassing to see what gets put on the market and bought...

Thank you so, so much for this video. Hermit crabs are probably one of the most neglected pets that people buy, and it breaks my heart. When I was a kid, I got a hermit crab at a flea market. I kept it in one of those tiny betta tanks, I never gave it salt water, it had gravel, no extra shells, and I always kept it in my bathroom in the dark. I was an uneducated kid who shouldn’t have been allowed to get a pet when I was too young to properly care for it. Since that, I’ve always been dedicated to properly educating people at my job about the care hermit crabs really need and deserve.

my cleopatra died recently and yes, the smell wasn’t pleasant, but even more unpleasant was the fact that I have to bury her next to my Hollycat. Miss them both. 😔

@@Aaa-nx1ik if you mean a bigger cage for tarantulas, they don't benefit from large spaces. That only stresses them since they spend most of their time in their burrow waiting for food. The size of this cage in the video is perfect for most tarantulas. Unless you have, say, a Goliath Bird Eater, those are massive.

My friend had a hermit crab. A terrible enclosure as well, A lot like this one but smaller. Her dad put the hermit crab in the garden to give it “exercise”. We haven’t seen it since.

Omg i hate those cages. When i was 9-11 i had a clan of hermits and so did my friend. My tank were big and super nice and and all my crabs lived for a pretty long time. I did use the portable tank just to take them to my friends house to watch if i went on vacation and she would put a divider in her tank.

I actually had a hermit crab smaller than that tiny shell once! It was years ago however (15 years?) and I got him on a boardwalk shop so that probably means some cruelty was involved. I had no idea because I was 5 though lol. Also the shell was not.. that narrow or shaped like that at all. But yeah just something neat to imagine a tiny tiny crab!

This video was the best. I've learned so much in the last 6 months about hermie's. Can I ask a question? Do you ever have mold issues in your #crabitat? I've recently added a hood to our 10 gal tank with our hermie's to keep humidity which is working but now I notice mold. More quickly I guess. I've read some people add springtails??? How do I go about taking care of this?

Thank you so much for the important information! I recently got 2 hermit crabs and one of them died from the lack of heat, space, etc. The person that I bought it from did not give me a single bit of info about the crabs but I knew the enclosure was way to small! Next weekend I am going to get all of the requirements for my hermit crab! I am so incredibly sad for the crabs that died because of the lack of information that was given to children.(me as well) I am going to try my best and do research on how to give my hermit crab the best life it could possibly have! 😁 thank you once again for the information!
