So, this video became unexpectedly popular (thanks, KZread algorithms!) and currently has 4x the views of my next highest-viewed video. If you've stumbled on this video, I'm an International Master (IM) who makes educational chess videos. Chances are you're a new/casual player, and if you're looking to get better I'd recommend playing longer games (at least 30 minute per side) and watching my Chess Fundamentals series: kzread.info/dash/bejne/c6Nty7Gee8LQprg.html Chess is a great game - I hope you consider pursuing it further. Cheers!

Is your life so meaningless that you are telling a stranger to get schooled just so you can pretend like you are special and better than everyone else? @Master Yoda Charity work??? How is telling someone that Great Britain is different that England charity work? Those two words are interchangeable in day-to-day talk, and everyone would know what you are talking about. If you were to go up to someone and say England, they are going to think of the United Kingdom, England is used to refer to the U.K., and England is a part of the U.K., so how the hell are you teaching me if I know this stuff? and how is this charity work? Again, this is a chess video, not a history buff video, and I would appreciate it if you could just take the joke and not be so serious about one small mistake another person makes over the internet.

  • @Rikomer

@Master Yoda I know that they are not the same, but they are mostly interchangeable, normal people will understand what I am saying, and that is all that matters, if you want to keep arguing, be my guest, but I'm not going to continue to respond to you given that you didn't carefully read my argument. For the last time, this is a chess video, most of us came here to just chill out and watch chess, not learn about the United States Revolutionary War

My first opponent was my father. I was 7. Never took to a serious level. About couple years ago I started playing on the internet. Last monday I went to my girlfriend school to teach some children the basics of chess. I am not a good player, rating around 1200 online only. But it was very satisfying to be able to teach them the basic rules like control the center, develop minor pieces to good squares, castle, dont move the same piece twice during the opening. Your chessable website helped me with the basic lines for e4 and d4. Regards.

My first opponent was my father who taught me how to move pieces when I was I think 7 or so. My big dream was to beat him one day, but he kept crushing me everytime we played. But when I turned 14, something has changed, I finally felt like an equal opponent, even though I was still losing all the games, I felt like I´m getting better. Then, a few days after my 15th birthday, I challenged him to a game, that lasted for 3 days (we didn´t have clock). I played Italian opening, got a nice position and launched an attack that resulted in my father´s resignation before forced mate in 4. I almost bursted into tears after that. My father never played me again, he says that it makes no sense cause I´ve already proved that I am better. Now I am 22, rated 1614 FIDE, hoping to break my father´s record of around 1750. Thank you for this video, John. :)

DGT Centaur would be the modern version of this board. It's sleek, beautiful and modern looking. If you're into playing over the board vs computer then you might find that worth a try... Especially with the interface this used, it might be familiar to you. I applaud your younger self for playing chess and damn I wish I had something like that when I was little. I hope that you preserve this childhood memory and when you're an old guy you do another video or hologram or whatever is used in the future... And show us this again because I think that it's amazing that such a simple yet profoundly advanced device (for it's time) inspired a child and elevated a simple game to a passion that lasted a lifetime. Being black from country South Carolina, weren't too many people that knew anything about it. I played a few times in school with a couple of people. Won once without even understanding. Fast forward to 2006 and i found this in the chess box and played it everyday for the year i was there. This and sudoku kept my mind off the stress of actual war. Im pretty good now, and i definitely credit this old game. I've been looking for it, kinda, since 2014 when i remembered it. and now i know the game. Going to ebay right now

Ah I miss them times John,I used to sell these table top chess computers in my shop 90s to mid 2000, the strongest one I can recall was a Mephisto big wooden board and practically full size pieces it was around 2200 , my first ever one was early 80s a scicys one must have been around 1200 max lol, I was a beginner then so I thought it was a GM lol,but it definitely improved my game and gave me hours and hours of enjoyment,I moved up to stronger models later. Thanks for the memories John,I think you went back to being a kid again then John. Cheers Joe (BDG Joe)

Oh, man... I used to play a Saitek Kasparov tabletop engine quite similar to yours except mine didn't have an lcd display. Kaspy and I would play together for hours and hours and I would even try to play when not using the chess pieces (i.e. semi blindfold, seeing only the board and pressing my finger against the squares to make the moves). Kaspvy had 64 playing levels and I too vanquished them in turn but I'm nowhere near as strong a player as you (I'm lichess blitz median ~1850. Been stranded on this plateau for years!). Thanks for rejuvenating the great memories.

I'm relly curious to see you take level 72. You can try to cut computer's thinking time out of the video. And my first opponent was my father, who taught me the moves some summer. But he wasn't any kid of serious chess player. He just played a bit as a kid himself. We only played occasionally I decided to learn more of chess way in teens and then I played ChessMaster on my phone. Still, wasn't very serious about it. Until I was 19 and I was bored and I got ChessMaster for a computer and did Josh Waitzkin's tutorials, which were the thing that really taught me how to play. And then I started playing chess on facebook and this is how it started :P

I want to buy my father such a thing, but there is not a single normal description of how it works anywhere on the Internet! And only with you I finally saw the principle of operation of this computer! Thank you very much! This computer is very cool because it is physical and you can touch it with your hands, as if you are playing with a living person, not on a smartphone or monitor. and you move real figures - full immersion. It's a pity that so few of them are produced and I found a similar one at a flea market with very great difficulty (Chess Partner 3 Kasparov )

I loved mine! The first thing to remember when preserving the machine is to stop applying pressure with the pieces and use your fingers instead. I cringed every time. I recall doing the same and with the second piece (or rather pawn) I moved I slipped my grip and a forever damaged (yet barely functional) D5 resulted. It had a most obvious scratch and a button that seemed to only listen if pressed thrice.

Hi there! My first chess computer was in 1981 and was a German Mephisto II unit. It wasn't that strong but was fun at the time. Later I upgraded to the Mephisto Exclusive wooden auto board which was beautiful. I traded it in for a plastic but stronger Mephisto computer but wish I'd kept the wooden board because it was a lovely quality set. Thanks for posting.

I loved watching your video(twice now). Excalibur King Arthur, bought at Fry's Electronics in 2003. Once I learned the London System opening, I was finally able to start winning at higher levels at a faster rate, 10 level jumps at a time. It's like I cracked the code and on my way to finally beat the computer soon.

In addition to using it as an opponent I also practiced certain openings (with the set-up function). I wonder if this type of chess computer is still offered (on the market) in 2022?

This reminds me of when I was watching Bobby Fischer play Boris Spasky for the world championship on TV in 1972, and the commentators analyzing the position as the game progressed, they were using the Fritz program if I remember rightly, and it's nice to hear the thinking behind the moves in real-time. William Hartston was one of the commentators, I wonder why they don't they do that now. (on terrestrial TV I that is).
