Richie banks introduced us years ago. I’m obsessed with Physical Therapy concepts after an injury. Long story short, I can very quickly explain to you what exercises to do to fix your foot pain. Skating strengthens muscles that tighten your hips. Strengthening the opposite muscles will loosen them. Relieving the pressure chain all the way down to your feet; reducing pain from a muscle imbalance

This really demonstrates why skating it good for personal development. You build your skills, and then develop new goals for yourself to push yourself further, then you work on that goal persistently over sometimes very long stretches of time, learning to improve slowly the whole time, and then you (hopefully) eventually succeed. That's a fine model for success in any endeavor in life.

Gradually introducing wide toe box, zero drop shoes. Strengthening and stretching the calves and anterior tibialis. Constantly working the soft tissue with lacrosse balls, foam rollers, etc. Took me many months to get to a pain free baseline, but even now, years later I have to continue to grind or the issues come back. But maybe mine was unusually bad- had let it go for years and was hobbled by the end. Doctors / shots / ice type of stuff was ultimately useless for me… temporary bandaid fixes

**I know you said you tried everything to fix your feet. I had it too. It's all about massaging your feet right when you wake up and I mean for like 5 minutes. The little tears heal at night while your foot is curled down towards the foot of the bed. So when you step on it right away you basically straighten the curve too fast making all the little scars tear again and start over for the day. Also, roll a frozen water bottle and a lacrosse ball under your feet when you're chilling to smash the scar tissue so your fascia can glide smoothly. I used the dull side of a butter knife and also a spoon to smooth it as much as possible. (graston technique) ☮

This is all really great advice, but there really does come a point where none of this helps. I've been riding since 1994 and have dealt with plantar fasciitus for the last 15 years. As it would come and go, I found many ways to deal with and even completely alleviate the pain and swelling. Last February my feet and legs hurt so bad that I had to take time off of work. It got to the point that nothing would help. No frozen water bottles, no massages, no cortisone, etc. I finally gave up riding for a full year and just jumped back on the board this month. My feet are still killing me and I'm just starting to wonder if at a certain age, and having so many past injuries on my legs and ankles from skating, that I just need to give it up altogether. My pediatrist has even recommended a full month off of work and another 3 months off the skateboard because of how out of control it has become. I guess my best advice would be to try your best to be proactive about it because once it gets to a certain threshold, it is very hard to get back to some semblance of normalcy.

Hey Chad, I’m currently suffering from plantar fasciitis from my driving delivery job. It sucks so bad and my understanding is that it takes a really long time to heal. Before Xmas when work was really busy it was unbearable and I would end every day limping and in intense pain. I have started wearing an elasticated ankle and foot support sock and have insoles that support the arch of my feet and pad my heel. I also take turmeric capsules everyday as it’s good for inflammation. I’ve also been doing some exercises that loosen my calf muscles and hamstrings which in turn loosen the plantar fascia. All of this is helping but I still have days where it’s really painful. My doctor assured me that it will get better but because there is less circulation in your feet and because it’s tendon damage where there is even less blood flow it’s just one of those things that will take a really long time to get better. I feel your pain but at least you got it from doing something you enjoy. I got it from a stupid minimum wage job 😂 😭. All the best

You have a classic case of "too stoked". When I was 24-31, I skated 2-3hrs day even when sore and ended up with a knee injury that took 1 yr to heal, 2 yrs more to feel close to 100%. I only skate around 10min/day, couple days a week cuz I can instantly feel when my body says alright man calm down don't be "too stoked". When I'm actually at 100, I'll increase the session lengths

My feet used to kill me when I skated all the time. My big toe joint , bottom of foot, etc. had no idea whst was going on and just laughed at self, “I’m a skater, and my feet hurt of course”. I have the same problem you have, I went to a podiatrist and got custom orthotics to correct the postitioning of my feet. I’m limited to what shoes I can wear, but I’m glad I did it. Took some getting used to, but a lot of my feet problems were gone. Also I roll my ankle a lot less because my feet are where they should be. I feel this man, when your feet are bad, it affects for ankles, knees, hips and spine. The foundation are your feet. I hope you figure it out and if anything I hope this makes it to you and hopefully opens a new outlet for healing. Peace man.

I've looked into orthotics as well and i need to just bite the bullet. I think at my new job i can get them covered by the department so i may try again then but I've only heard good things about them. The doc told me they were around 220 if i remember right but with how much i need my feet ankles and knees to do what i love i think its a very small investment when you consider the possible benefits.

Yup, custom if possible but if that isn't an option, at least get something like some Superfeet insoles to support the arches and take some of the stress on the plantar fascia and Achilles. You've probably already heard all of this before from your phisio, but really good odds that all the long days on your feet resulted in arches falling and stressing those areas which in turn leads to the pain and inflammation. Skaters and BMXers are always reluctant to try insoles that might compromise board/pedal feel but they can make a big difference towards recovery. Skate shoes are notoriously terrible when it comes to arch support and we tend to wear those things around all day. If you won't try them skating, at least have a secondary pair of shoes with the insoles (or just take them out when you skate). Superfeet have sponsored pro skaters before so it's very possible to get along with them on the board.

Almost exact same for me. Takes a lot of work to keep it in shape but gotta find what will do the best for your feet. Everyone’s feet are so different and it’s possible to get them back to somewhat normal but it takes faith and determination. One recommendation if you live near ocean water is just get your feet in there in the sand as much as possible. Laying with your feet above your heart while sleeping is a super difficult one but I got used to it and it does help.

@@Schnarkel do it, you won’t regret it. As a skateboarder it’s gonna be annoying because you will be limited with shoes. Like for me, lows don’t work really cuz my heel slips out because the orthotics raise your feet. But sometimes after the shoe breaks in it works. I mainly find myself leaning towards mids and highs, and they have plenty of styles that look dope! Hope you figure it out!

As someone who fought for years with this issue (and Achilles Tendonitis), I recommend pulling out the hard surface (normally made of plastic)that skate shoes have on the heel area, right on the back of the shoe. This will allow your feet to expand when you are skating or walking and this lack of tension will help dramatically to heal. I hope this helps, :)

It's basically just overuse from all the pushing across america. Do some calf raises/tib raises, single leg balance to strengthen the tendons above and around your feet. Rotate your feet clockwise, and just try to get some bloodflow going around your feet on a daily basis, and within a few weeks you'll be good. Sit on your knees and heels 2-3 times a day and be patient.

Recovery takes time. I'm 51, trained 30-40 miles/week for several months last year ahead of a marathon. Limped to the bathroom every morning after waking up. My feet have finally returned to normal with little to no pain now that I'm in between training regimens. Daily icing and foam/rubber ball rolling helped. Not running 30-40 miles/week helped a lot more. It'll improve as long as you don't skate across America or anything extreme like that 😂❤

Chad, I am dealing with this in both heels and I have figured out some healing heelers. It all starts in the morning! Whenever you get up from rest and the puppies are barking, you can’t just start walking on them. You gotta roller your arches with a bottle. I use a copper water bottle with water in it to roll both feet on for about a minute or two. After a minute you can continue to roll your feet on the bottle but pull all your toes up towards you and roll a little bit more. Don’t get right into vans or any other hard flat shoes. I slip into crocs or high arch flip flops for the first thing. I use superfeet green in my adidas cloud foam running shoes for work now because vans are what caused my plantar fasciitis. I have seen significant improvements over the last week and it’s almost gone. Just wanted to share brotha.

They make a device that you wear to bed, that keeps your foot bent at the ankle. Some are a big boot while others are like fabric, velcro and plastic. Without it, at night your feet relax. All that tissue starts to heal, then in the morning you tear it all again. It isnt going to cure it overnight but it might help.

Just to add my two cents on Planar Fasciitis. I am no doctor, and this is just based on my personal experiance: Next to the rest stretches and the massaging, very regular light exercises (2 times a day minimum) to stimulate blood flow to the tendons under the feet, and don't require strength, where essential for my recovery. First 1,5 years I was only stretching and massaging, didn't help enough and was in pain every day. After that i started to exercise my feet and the pain was gone in 4 months. It takes time, but if it is Planar Fasciitis, you really want to fix the problem otherwise it will potentially get worse and ruin your feet.

I've had achilles issues and pain in my feet for some years (also due to completely overloading them) so I know how much sucks to be in pain for such a prolonged period of time. I got better after almost 2 years (!) with made-to-measure inlay soles from a podotherapist. My fysiotherapist recommended that. Straightens out your feet, gets some pressure of your tendants and allow time to heal. I didn't think much of it and the inlay soles cost me like 250 euro.. but than after a week or 4-5 I started to feel the pain getting less. My achilles is still a weak spot.. but I can do everything again and the f*cking pain is gone. I wish the same for you bro! Maybe you can give it a shot ❤

Chad, I'm not at all telling you to do what I did, but switching to minimalist footwear and going barefoot as much as possible SERIOUSLY helped strengthen and correct my feet, and cured my plantar fasciitis. I do NOT skateboard, however. I am now a weird barefoot bum, but my feet only ever hurt when I stub my toes... or step on glass or thorns... or when I walk on hot asphalt 😁 Seriously though, going barefoot and wearing Vibram Five Fingers changed my life. It takes time, just like anything else, but it feels amazing. My feet were pretty bad, so my first few hears trainhopping and hitchhiking barefoot was painful at times... the pain is just fatigue. Just a sign to slow down and take a break and massage. I had plantar fascia pain still from time to time, but it felt "good"... like, it felt necessary and corrective, and I'm pretty sure it was. My feet actually "grew" quite a bit. I put that in quotes because it was more like they were just bound up for so long in messed up footwear... so once they were free, they finally got to slowly stretch out. That, AND they grew a lot stronger and more dexterous and useful. I imagine you wouldn't wanna skate barefoot very much. Longboarding barefoot seems like it'd be nice

I had Plantair Faciatis for over a year. Its a bummer because I love to run. Its finally going away. I got a pair of oofos shoes(slides) that I wear indoors. That really helped, but mostly it took time. Have faith and patience and youll be better someday :).

I feel you on that man. I got diagnosed with a sprained ankle and Achilles tendonitis on the same foot. Luckily that one healed. Now my other foot has problems. It's like on and off pain. Being flat footed doesn't make it better either.

I needed 6 months of recovery time for my feet pain from my last job so I feel like it's gonna probably take a while for you probably longer than me. Blood flow always helps of course. Doing the exercises can help but definitely getting the shot for people that have it really bad does wonders. My mother wasn't able to walk and now can stand all day after her shot healed up.

Cortisone doesn't fix anything. Get shoes with a rocker bottom (Hoka Clifton), stretch your calves in the morning in bed before you walk. It will never go away if you keep aggravating it, and it takes months to go away if you do everything right. Never wear any other shoes (particularly "modern" sneakers with the big heels that go backwards). Don't use tip toes, that's making your calves that much stronger (and pulling the plantar fascia more). Stretch calves, touch toes all day, rocker sole sneakers all the time.

There are shapes it there that have a shorter Wheelbase with the wider shape. That’s what I’m skating these days as I like the wider deck but need the shorter wheelbase. Most 8.5s are 14.5” wheelbase but PSstix has a few shapes that have a 14 wheelbase. Yousta sells them and Crailtap, metal, and heated wheel all carry shapes that are similar.

I had plantar fasciitis for well over a year. It came on slowly, manageable in the beginning, but eventually it will become debilitating if you don’t take action. Everyone told me different ways to fix it, but nothing worked except a regimen of stretching the correct muscles in your feet. This works best standing a little more than arms length from a wall. Keep your right foot in place, flat on the ground, and take a step towards the wall with your left. Lean into the wall while keeping your right leg straight and right foot as flat as possible. This will stretch the plantar fascia in your foot. Once you feel the stretch in the arch of your foot, hold it for as long as comfortable, and then bend your right knee. This will move the stretch into your heel and up through your calf, which is connected to your plantar fascia. Again, hold for as long as comfortable, and then repeat with the other leg. Do this at least three times a day every day until the pain is gone. It feels silly but it works. I noticed quite a bit of relief within about a week’s time. It was entirely gone within three months or so. You can also stretch your toes back when you wake up in the morning to get a jumpstart on things. Some people recommend using a tennis or lacrosse ball to rub out the muscle but I found it only exacerbated my problems. Also important: we’re getting old, and we have to take care of our feet. Flat skate shoes wreak havoc on your arches. Buy a nice pair of supportive running shoes to wear when you aren’t skating. I wear Saucony Guides when I’m out and about, and change into my Etnies when it’s time to skate. I know what it’s like to have feet issues Chad! You’ll get through it, research foot stretches and workouts you can add to help your progress along! Get better soon!

Relying on support just weakens arches more. There's a reason South East Asians rarely have flat foot and bunions. They are used to barefoot and flip-flops/sandals everyday. Flat shoes are actually better to strengthen your foot. Wide toe box to make your toe fingers splay more. If you workout and lift, do it barefoot too. Shoes are really not beneficial. Humans are well adapted to being barefoot but we took that away ourselves. Not saying you go around town barefoot, but wear minimal shoes, none of soft shitty bouncy shoes. And go barefoot around your house. I do boxing skipping rope and speed ladders barefoot, strong/agile foot and ankles all day.

@@bassyey I’m naturally flat footed and i overpronate, which probably contributed to my issues. But wearing supportive shoes when I run or when I’m in the gym has really helped me.

please read the pain free athlete by julie Donnelly or do a consult with her. casual massage won’t do it. It’ll hurt working those spasmed muscles out but it’s worth it to get back to normal.

It's Plantar Fascitis. Shoe inserts help so much. Try Super Feet Orange inserts, and don't walk barefooted. In the house I use Spenco sandals and I have not suffered like I used to. Pushing used to kill my foot. Im great now by using these 2 things you dont need a doctor to acquire.

the book "your best stride" by jonathan beverly contains lasting remedies for plantar fasciitis and achilles tendonitis, among a whole lot of other great advice about using your body for runners. i have used these remedies with success. it requires doing daily exercises and takes a few weeks to work, but it does work. cortisone shots and braces don't address the root causes. to get rid of p.f., you need to strengthen your fascia with toe yoga and short foot exercises. the cause of a.t. is further up the kinetic chain, you need to stretch your hip flexors.

If your cozy on an 8.5 but struggle with the length, try a Deluxe board. I pretty much exclusively ride their 8.5 x 31.8 x 14.25 boards. The Real team oval and Anti Hero classic eagles always come in that size.

Wear Treadlabs insoles in your skate shoes and everyday shoes. and anytime you're not skating wear a pair of the Danner bullrun shoes, the cushion with the shank is perfect and it will still take about 6 months before you're fully back.

I had horrible fasciitis for a few years, in the morning it was like walking on jagged rocks, and ice and massages did almost nothing for it. Using a massage gun fixed it. A few sessions over a couple days made a world of difference and then it was just some mild tenderness for a while. It was super intense and almost unbearable while doing but it was like the bottoms of my feet were cramped up and it loosened them up
