Great review thanks for sharing. But for the money if your wanting lenses for R7, you should look at Meike also. If must have a Full frame lenses, then for under $500 this would be a very good lenses. But for R7, you should look at the new RF mount Meike lenses. I got the new 25mm T2.2 in RF mount and 50mm T2.2 and they are both incredible lenses. They are so sharp from center to even corners that are excellent. They are sharper, have less Chromatic Aberration, less focus breathing and look of them is one of best from any lenses I have ever tried. I prefer them over my RF L glass. Since they are Super35 APS-C lenses they are smaller and lighter with 77mm filter size which I also love. They cost $449 per lenses and have a 10mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm, 65mm and 85mm in the set, so lot's of options in focal lengths.

I’m so old school, I only use focus peaking and have not even checked out the other modes. This is a good idea for a video though, as using manual lenses is my plan to get around the 3rd party autofocus lens ban, so I should explore these tools.

While it's no cinema lens the RF 85mm f/2 has similar qualities to the lens here. The bokeh isn't a smooth but it's pretty darn good. I got the 85 for my R5 but I like the 135ish mm on the R7. I'm not sure how much detail the RF 85mm resolves but it seems more than ok for my needs. Note I use it only for photos haven't tried it for video yet. Thanks so much for the video. Cheers.

I personally tried the RF 85mm f/2 and for photo's it is GREAT! For video it totally sucks!! One of worst autofocus lenses I have ever used, even the Sub $200 RF 50mm f/1.8 performs better in autofocus for video then the 85mm does. I returned it for refund. But if you portrait shooter and don't use it for video, it's an awesome lenses.

I wanted to ask, I prefer the size of the R10 is it worth the difference between the R10 vs R7? If you often crop your images, the 32Mpx of the R7 will be helpful to keep a good image. If you are into video the R7 is definitely a worthy upgrade because of ISIS stabilization, oversampled 4K images and uncropped 60FPS. Overall the R7 is a good entry level camera for professional use while the R10 is targeting advanced amateurs. The R10 is definitely the better choice for most people.

After having almost all of my lenses stolen for my Canon M50 on my way back from Spain last month, based on one of your reviews I went ahead and traded the body and my remaining lens in for the R7 and 18-150mm kit lens. That pretty much wiped out my budget for an extra lens. Can you do a series on what to look for and how to purchase used lenses for this camera? Also, I used the Sigma 16mm on my M50 for videos. What would be a good equivalent for the R7 for videos exclusively that is "budget" minded?

  • @markwiemels

A used lens video is a good idea, thanks. The biggest issue with the R7 is the lack of lenses at the moment, there is no equivalent to the 16mm f1.4 at the moment. The RF 16mm f2.8 is the closest, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Sigma lens.

@sandersassen manual focus lenses (proper ones) have a much longer throw, which allows for more precision and nuance. There is also the Aperture ring as well that is fluid. They are also parfocal and have less or no breathing. They also match in color in sets for less work in post. There is more... RF lenses may as well not have manual focus they are teeerrible at it. Lol. You are exactly correct about the artistic angle. That is what I meant. Great convo. Cheers.

They are also so big and heavy as is that adding the adaptor in between is no big deal! The gem in the system has got to be the drop-in filter adaptor, making a single polarizer or ND filter available to every one of those Arts.
