Great video! I'm considering getting the R7 to upgrade from my 80D and was wondering about some video settings so thank you for the deep dive into its possibilities. I know it's an overall video and it's not supposed to go further into video technicalities but it would have been nice to talk a little bit about the effect the aperture has on the depth of field because depending on the result you want you won't set it to the lowest, therefore you won't always need an ND filter, and the way you present it is not really teaching anything to people having no clue about it 😉 But it doesn't take anything from the rest of the video so thanks again!

This was so informative for me. I just got mine in the other day. I wanted it because I felt it was going to be an easier and lighter option for me to use during wrestling tournaments for my son. But, now I’m pondering if I can actually shoot in these modes and make the best senior year video ever. 😂. Honestly. This is amazing and I’m now a huge fan. What brand of Filter did you use in this video? There’s nothing but awful fluorescent lighting at these places. I’ve left my 1dx on the same settings for the last few years because that’s the only time I use that one! My 5d range bodies are my babies and my favorite. But, video and the shutter speed was the main reason I purchased this body. I’m eager to jump in all the way!

Congrats on the new camera! I usually just use an ND Filter, if I am shooting with EF lenses I have the Canon RF to R adapter with built-in variable ND filter or I use a Tiffin variable ND filter on the end of my RF lenses. You could probably shoot in these modes and make the best senior year video ever...however I would recommend practicing using these settings and color correction/grading before shooting something important if you're not familiar with shooting in LOG. It is a whole new skill set...you can also use the camera without shooting in LOG and get great results without having to do so much in post production. 👍

Hello, I don't have any experience with the Sony ZVE10 but I still think that the Canon R7 is probably the better camera of the two. I believe the Sony is made mostly for vlogging and the Canon is a more well rounded camera. I have used the Canon R7 with both the 18-150mm lens as well as the 16mm f2.8 lens and they are both great with the camera. The Canon also has 4:2:2 color profile so if you do any color grading you will be able to push it further. Just my opinion, I hope it helps!

Np! You can change the shutter speed to whatever you want to, but to get the most cinematic looking video you should always have your shutter speed set to double whatever the frames per second are...24fps=1\48, 30fps=1/60, 60fps=1/120, etc. This gives you the proper motion blur in your video and gives it that cinematic look...this is a general rule but feel free to experiment and check out the difference.

Hello, I am testing out footage with these settings. There seems to be an issue with the codec in the clog 3 videos when trying to bring it into DaVinci Resolve (free version). Other 4k fine videos without clog work just fine, but I only get audio to import when shooting in clog3. Do I need to either get the studio version or another editing software? Should I convert the h265 codec to h264? If so, do you know a trustworthy site?

Since others have already mentioned AF, i would add that R7 is going to produce a 16:9 video, and you didn't say anything about that (your sample seems to be anamorphic). And where you go slow motion, you did shoot it in 60 or 120 fps, didn't you?

  • @ScooterMediaVideos

Yes, these are the settings to get you started if you are trying to achieve a cinematic look with the R7. I generally use the default autofocus settings but you are welcome to use whatever you would like. I just added black bars to the top and bottom of the video to make it look more like a movie as there is no anamorphic. Yes, if there are slow motion shots in there they were probably shot at 60fps...again just wanted to show what the little R7 is capable of. 👍

Just change the Movie Rec. size to 4k 59.94 which will put the camera into 60 frames per second. Then change your shutter speed to 1/125 and you're good to go. Then you can slow the footage down to 50% on a 30 fps timeline or down to 40% on a 24 fps timeline in post. If you want it even slower enable the High Frame Rate option in the Movie Rec Quality section and then change the shutter speed to 1/250...this will put the camera into HD 120fps but there will be no audio recorded at this frame rate.

There are other modes in the camera like TV which is a shutter priority mode and you adjust the shutter speed and the camera automatically adjusts everything else.
