I like how Gene gets Kari involved in these videos as a layperson on the topic and then starts explaining the different features of the cameras. Also liked it when Gene taught Kari how to use Davinci Resolve in one of the previous videos. Besides, it also gives a different take on the review, maybe a bit of a more unbiased one, because Kari is choosing based on the features that she prefers rather than the brand that she prefers.

@@codygroce2091 you wont regret it. I loved my GH4 and it was my workhorse for 7 years. More than paid for itself, but man have I been missing out. Being able to keep all of my adapted lenses and get better color as well as IBIS and many other features, like I said you cant go wrong with this guy for $1800

Great job on the tests and analysis. I assumed they would be relatively similar, but the Canon did a bit better than expected! That 30mbps encoding option on the Sony sounds appealing. It's a challenge saving projects these days so I often use 8-bit 4:2:0 h.265 hevc on an Atomos Ninja V when indoors because I don't need to adjust much in post. I'm actually using two Canon M6ii cameras right now for my videos, but if I can ever afford it I'm leaning towards a full FX30 dual body kit. That might change if Canon opens up their mount to 3rd party lens makers like Sigma and Tamron.

I am really liking the R7 here. It handles itself well in video.

In all honesty: The R7 and R10 only came out this summer. Of course there aren't too many APS-C RF-S lenses out yet. What do you expect ? But there is a ton of perfectly good working EF-S lenses out there and the bonus is, in camera VND, if you use the filter adapter.

I don't see any problem using full frame RF lens on R7/R10. The RF16mm on R7 is still usable for vlog. All the silver ring primes/cheap RF lens fits R7/R10. (16>25, 24>28, 35>56, 85>136, 100-400>160-640) And why people always look down on adapting EF lens, not all EF lenses are heavy. There's pancake lenses in late EF era, put them with the speedbooster on R7/R10 and you can a decent pair. It's not expensive.

Yeah me too. Here in Norway the R7 body-only costs ca 2100$ but the RP with kit lens costs ca 1300$ … I’m really considering the RP over the R7

Great video PT. Love the comparison and insights. Purchased R7 plus EF lens adapter a few weeks ago, and I couldn't be happier. For its price it shouldn't be this good, It's surpassed my expectations, but then again I haven't upgraded my camera since 2015. Also acquired a Lumix S5, and have to say, the dynamic range and stabilisation is truly awesome on that. Camera manufacturers have picked up their game in the past 2 years =)

I bought the R7, always shot with Canon, but the need to always have adapters and large, expensive lenses is the thing that made me return it and get the fx30, and I do not regret it. There are some great, fast, small, and inexpensive lenses for the Sony, and thats just not as true with the Canon, not to mention their whole thing with banning 3rd party lenses for rf

The R7 and R10 came out this summer. There were no Canon APS-C mirrorless bodies up until that point. Of course it takes a little while, until those surface. In the meanwhile, you could have used inexpensive EF-S lenses with the adapter.

Canon owns those rights for now so they're not gonna let 3rd party manufactures do it for now. Annoying but understandable. Sony did the same thing, it's just that they're already past that since they started earlier.

@@boomboombaby9140 but that is exactly part of the decision. Your biggest investment is not in the body. It is in the lenses. I have a comprehensive set of Canon L series EF lenses. No way, I'd personally consider Sony.

@@username7790 opening the lenses to third parties has always boosted body sales.... the problem is.... with modern mirrorless cameras there's no much money in the bodies because they compete with smart phones and the sales are way down.... the big money is in lenses.... thankfully the EF -> RF adapter are amazing and EF Glass is cheap, easy and good to come by!

What do you think if the Fuji xh2? I think that's right under $2k USD. Curious to hear your thoughts on it and the XH2s.

Canon R7 is best as a Hybrid camera. Canon need more RFs lens with fast aperture. Best within 1500usd. It will be nice if it comes under 1400usd.

I knew giant drones could fit full size cameras but these newer smaller drones are powerful and fast. very impressed. I wouldn't fly a drone with a 2k + camera on it...

What do you have against Sony digital active stabilization? To me it’s essential unless I were on a tripod or gimbal. I get that it has a slight crop but it’s great.

@McSnapples canon offers more dumb proof, turn on and shoot AF tracking of them all. No Google search, no KZread tutorial, no tweaking a million settings, straight out of retail box, af track does what it says on the surface, autofocus, tracking, no fuss no bells n whistles

@McSnapples the skill set and vision of great photographers aren't related to manual exposure or manual focus speed, that's called camera operater. Contrary to your belief, if Bresson was alive today, I believe he would choose Canon or Sony because they both let him focus on the real important stuff, the decisive moments, less time fiddling with camera settings. Camera is only a tool end of the day.

@McSnapples all the pro products you mentioned are adding more and more auto functions into their newest offering than the last generation. Those niche brands don't have the technology Canon and Sony have otherwise they would add AF tracking without blinking an eye. Fujifilm included. Gfx 100s keep improving their af capabilities firmware after firmware, now it is about 3 generations behind Sony FF in AF. Leica is no longer competing in the professional world anymore, a high end pricetag doesn't mean they are in the hands of top photographers, they are more on the shelf of dentists, lawyers, politicians' home. Even Leica SL series have had major AF improvement over the years.

Hopefully the Canon R7 has a firmware update where it gets 10 bit in all picture profiles instead of in the C-Log profile especially with the release of the Fuji S-20

I feel like you under sold the Sony stabilization in the beginning. I own the FX30, and it has standard stabilization and active stabilization. The active stab, although with a crop, works really well for handheld shooting in my experience. Sony is not know for their stabilization, but they did a good job with the FX30's active stab IMO.

I think I'd probably get the FX30. In fact, I've been thinking a lot about it since I currently shoot a Lumix S5 and it's leaving my wanting more. The third party lens option just isn't really there for Panasonic, and I kind of want the ability to go out and buy something like a Viltrox 33mm f1.4 or something to test some different focal lengths. I have a few EF lenses for Canon and I could get an adapter for the R7, but I think the FX30 would be more useful too. Especially with the autofocus.

For Panasonic you have sigma 16-23-30-56mm f1.4 for L-mount Lumix S5 is a full frame camera but you can choose to use it like an apsc camera. It’s cheaper than the fx30 + better dynamic range + more cinema features + AF in apsc mode is good

The lines are blurring. Great comparison, but as someone who has invested in sony crop last 3 years, I think the canon had the edge in a lot of scenarios. Its annoying as outside of in the studio, lack of stabilisation means I seldom take video out and about on my Sony which sucks. The ibis on the r7 looks real good. I've always liked the canon look, but features of the sony, now its even more tough lol. Thanks for the comparison dude.

@@looniaz sure, 1 colors i much prefer the colors and look i can get out of slog 3 and it way easier to grade than vlog, 2 large hdmi port i kept breaking hdmi cables on the mini s5 port 3 longer record times the s5 always stopped recording at 30 mins, 4 auto focus holy hell i didn’t understand what autofocus wad until i got the fx 30 so consistent and so sharp

For Canon, get the Visioncolor custom color profile and you won't have to grade much, it desaturates just enough to uncrush the blacks. Saves so much time and looks great.

What is the cart you're using at 16:16? I could totally use one of them. And of course one of the Sony FX30s you're reviewing in this video. :D

Very interesting! I’ve used Sony NEX/ a cameras since 2012 and I like them but just hate the colors and overall darker look in mixed light/ natural lights. The FX30 looks awesome in reviews but this was the first time I really saw a comparison to a Canon camera and again I like the Canon color and ease of use. However here in Norway both the FX30 and R7 are ca 2200$ body-only but the Canon RP with kit lens costs only ca 1200$ and I wonder if crop sensor is worth it… compared to the RP with kit lens (latest firmware) and some small Samyang lenses that are smaller than some crop lenses. I think for the money I rather go fullframe in HD over crop and 4K. For social media that’s still fine.

Great comparison video... I agree FX30 has an excellent Auto Focus. It is a must have. That's why I pre-ordered it since I am a Sony user and invested on lenses. It's going to be a great upgrade for me coming from A6300. Very nice studio setup by the way ;-) .. Thanks for a very informative video...

I've always been a canon shooter for years, but recently with my job I had to shoot on a Sony a lot and honestly, they are both fantastic camera Brands. both do have drawbacks but as far as picture quality, they are really on Par. it all depends on which brand you want to invest in more when you start. its always fun seeing the competition of canon Vs. Sony when they come out with new cameras that have basically the same specs. awesome detailed video Gene!

i mean both canon and sony (also Leica, Fuji, Nikon, Panasonic and Olympus) use Sony Sensors as Sony is really the only one making sensors.... they're all using the same sensor so really you can't expect there to be a dfference in picture quality

Plus having the best camera on the market the best video camera on the market and the best autofocus in the business even for the low level Sony a6400 it's all the focus system beats out many full frame competitors that are thousands of dollars more. But to each his own I think I'll stick with Sony. But if I was broke then it's Cannon to the rescue

@@HagaishiSama as this video shows, Sony isn't really that ahead of canon. They are both on par just minor difference, and the R7 isn't even using canons best highest log. Sony auto is a bit better but canons ibis was better so there are tradeoffs.

Speed boosters won’t affect the depth of field but will give you more light. CVP done a great video on it. Also Meike have a great drop in rf adapter. Neat video!

Speedboosters does affect your fov - a 35 mm ff on an apsc would give a 52mm equiv fov , the 35 on a speedbooster would give you a 35mm equiv ( or close to it )

I've seen in your videos that you use really often the Sigma mc-11 adaper, how good is with a sigma art lense the autofocus performance on video?

The r7 didn't seem to have too much rolling shutter even in the drone shots, which I've seen as a big complaint of this camera

Can you make a video about the r7 with the metabones speed booster I have the metabones for my eos r wanted to see how it worked with the r7 and no one tests that speed booster only the canon one or the viltrox one

I think the FX30 is good for a B/C/Gimbal Camera but without a viewfinder it would never replace my A-Camera.
