“Famous Last Words” is an ambiguous ending. You don’t know if the patient survive and is gonna live different or if he is going to die and he just embrace death.

  • @vanessa6708

    @vanessa6708

    4 жыл бұрын

Isn’t a bad thing per se, Gerard said multiple times that it was intentionally ambiguous, and it’s kind of a portrait of the time and mental health of them at the time. They were bad to worst, but somehow they overcome the shit in their lives, half of the album it’s less ironical and more melodramatic, the patient facing not only death but his own mistakes and sins in life, to the end in Famous Last Words he’s facing life itself, he’s not knowing what is going on, what would be left of him... is he’s going to die? To live? What? We don’t know the same way we don’t now either. He’s telling us that whatever it will be he’ll face it bravely, not ironical or sinister as in the track Dead! He’s in between life and death, pleasure and tragedy but he’s accepting himself and the dark parts

The writing was my favorite with all the double entendres, timeless idioms, and the contrast of emotionally gut wrenching and ghoulishly cynical. I was too much into classic 70's rock like Rush, Led Zeppelin, and King Crimson to besmirch my ears with such common drab lol (most Zeppelin songs are just dick songs, at least the ones they didn't cover haha). Recently I've gotten into them and just floored that each album is good to outstanding, Black Parade is definitely an actual rock masterpiece. Dead! It's nice to see this much praise for this project. I can't listen to it too much anymore, my friend listened to this in the depths of her own fight with cancer, and when she beat it, we would blast it as a reminder that she won. 4 months later, a rapid onset of leukemia killed her. I love this whole album, but welcome to the black parade hits a little different when you sing it as you lower a 21 year old in her sparkly casket she picked at 15. Thank you for the review, it reminds me of all the good times we had.

tbh i feel like the way i contemplate death is as erratic as the album and it’s narrative is. i don’t agree with the idea of there being multiple primary characters, it just takes away from the intention of the album. songs like dead aren’t a character within the story singing to another character, it’s the song directly laying out these ideas and the setup to the rest of the album to the listener. the listener is the patient, the rest of the songs are just elaborating on the many complex feelings one would have about impending death. just in my experience

Disenchanted was originally going to be cut from the album. However it was saved at the last second by the bassist Mikey Way who urged the band to keep it. IMO it’s the best track on the album as it packs a massive punch and is absolutely crushing - as the main character comes to the final stages of accepting his fate and doing so feeling absolutely bitter. While I would hope no one here would ever face a situation like an early death - I think there are many moments in life where you have to accept a fate you aren’t happy about, and it’s not always a “happy” acceptance, and often is one of a bitter nature. Even if you eventually move on past it. The song captures that feeling of helplessness that I don’t think most songwriters want to talk about. Musically it’s incredible. The lyrics sting with every turn. The chorus flies high emotionally and crashes down. It’s catchy as hell. Easily the most underrated track on the record, and was my personal favorite back when this album originally released. Nice to see MCR finally get some love. I’ve noticed over the last 10 years more and more people realizing they love their music. Even those that hated them at the time they were popular. I think Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge - while not as great - has a ton of amazing songs. “The ghost of You” and “Thank You for the Venom” are awesome. And while Danger Days was hit and miss it also had some great moments. They are overall just a really solid band that is totally worth remembering.

honestly i think three cheers is underrated... i like it more than black parade, but that's not to discredit it! tbp was THE turning point and it's an amazing fucking album, i could go on and on. im just very passionate about this band and i guess i relate to the grimey sounding, "unprofessional" earlier stuff like bullets, but three cheers was a more cleaned up version of their heaviness. i just love it so much.

Listen to "Five Years" by David Bowie and then "The End".... nearly identical chords, melodies, and structure. So while it may feel more like a Pink Floyd than Bowie overall, I think it's a pretty direct nod to "Five Years" which was also an album opener on the Ziggy Stardust album. At the end of each song the vocal performances are basically the same... Bowie: "Five years, what a surprise", MCR: "Save me, too young to die"....

Even upon first listen I could tell it was something special, and almost fourteen years later those feelings haven't dulled at all. My Chem's albums are so cinematic/atmospheric/narrative-heavy that I always carve out time to just sit and soak in them without any distractions, even today. I loved this review; it's been super heartwarming to see the band be recognized more and more over the years for their artistry and impact.

Same! It was a Monday after school and I insisted my parents drive me to the store. I feel lucky I saw them on this tour too. And I agree, there is something particularly special about this album getting the acclaim it deserves. Melon alluded to it in his review, but I think a lot of this current warm reception has to do with our anxious MySpace generation growing up and ditching the adolescent mindset of "guilty" musical pleasures. I was in my earliest teens when the album came out, right at that age where you started to really explore music that was to your own taste, rather than passively absorbing radio hits. MCR was a gateway to heavier stuff for lots of us, so soon enough they were considered "scene music" that you weren't allowed to enjoy. You always kinda knew the album was amazing, and you always weirdly enjoyed it, but you just couldn't admit it. I think Paramore fell into the same category with Riot! Enter Shikari's first album would be another example - actual scene-kid music that was amazing but totally forbidden if you also liked heavy metal. Nowadays we're older and wiser we understand that there was nothing wrong enjoying what we did as kids. Without all those teenage hangups we're finally free to enjoy what is really great music.

Omfg. Finally. I discovered this album/band exactly a year ago, and I personally _loved_ this record. I listened to songs from it or even the whole thing almost every day for like 10 months. In the great times, in the hard times. I always felt it was something special (even most reviews say it's a classic), but there were also people who didn't think so high of it. Same with Three Cheers, which I discovered in around October. But it doesn't matter now. Finally. This. Is so. Validating.

I was obsessed with Green Day when American Idiot came out. I was 13 and I listened to that album and jumped around my bedroom for hours every day for months on end. They then came to town in Cleveland and my cousin and I went to our first show. My Chemical Romance opened up and blew my miiiind! (So did Green Day, one of the best nights of my life)...Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge became my new obsession (their first album I Brought You My Bullets... is a banger, as well), followed by the even better Black Parade album and I still love them so very much to this day. I bought my first guitar through their inspiration and danced around my house pretending I was Frank Iero (I still do sometimes : ) ). Thanks for sending love to the band, my friends used to give me so much shit about it haha (they listened to Fugazi, Modest Mouse, Primus--the "cooler" stuff, which I also loved) , but I knew that one day MCR would be appreciated because they're undeniably awesome. That day has come and I am old and I'm so friggin' stoked to go be an old person at their reunion tour!!! I wrote too much!

I love how you started with Three Cheers, as it shows the context of The Black Parade and how much of an evolution it was from their previous stuff. And I think you're review is spot on in revealing how My Chem was perceived during the mid-2000's by most people. I think it was mainly because they were surrounded by thousands of shitty warped tour bands in the same genre, and for some reason people like putting down a fanbase based on the half-brain stereotype of "their listeners are emotional 12-15 year old's so their music must suck..." BUT My Chem was clearly always in a tier of their own and actually had a VISION. Sometimes it just takes a decade for a band to get that recognition. The garbage bands fade into oblivion, and the bands that actually wrote great songs remain.

I have similar feelings. I've been a fan since not long before Parade was released, and I remember thinking 'this is so huge, it'll change rock'... it did, but not without being absolutely smashed by many (elitists?) that would dismiss the band simply on the grounds of them being associated with the term emo, which alright, I get it, emo was a rather obnoxious thing most of the time and even though I was a fan of MCR I never wanted to be associated with it either, but at the same time it was insanely unfair for the band. They're only being recognized as the quality, imaginative band that they were/are now, as oppossed to just by fans, and it's been 14 years since release. Oops, a tedtalk.

I felt like Teenagers sort of tied in to the childhood/teenage narrative we see in Disenchanted, almost as if the protagonist is flashing back to his own “emo middle/high school days”. Just like an “outcast” or “emo” kid, they hate and are scared of their fellow teenagers, who viciously bully them while also remaining “cogs in the machine” of the real world’s conformity and cleanliness. This (imo) is the climactic area of the album where MCR invite their teenage fans (who have not lived anything close to a full life) to identify with the narrative, saving the inspirational “Famous Last Words” for the end as a plea to be brave and choose life instead of suicide or self-harm.

It's cool seeing how other people share my experience on this. I remember hearing Black Parade on the radio as a kid and it stuck with me. I seeked it out when i was a bit older, decided to downloaded and the album. Listened to it twice in a row with my mouth hanging open XD

I recently gave this album another shot. I loved and still love Three Cheers so much and maybe I was too young to fully appreciate Black Parade but it was also everywhere and had gone super mainstream which back in the day I didn't like. After my recent listen of it I do find it a great album and wished I had given it a shot sooner.

In an interview with MCR they said that The End. was actually heavily inspired by Pink Floyd's In The Flesh? off The Wall. It's very easy to see the similarities.

I said the same. I don't hear David Bowie influences in that song at all. It was clearly modeled after "In the Flesh?".

It literally has the same chords and also the “five years” chant by backing vocals followed by the lead singer is the same as the “save me” chant.

I’m 30 years old and I’ve been an mcr fan since 2003. I’ve never been ashamed, but I’m truly happy to see the stigma lessening. A truly amazing band.

My late aunt showed me the "Welcome to the Black Parade" track when I was around four or five. I was instantly hooked on the song, it was my favorite for many years and to this day, as a sixteen years old junior in high school it still is one of my favorites to listen too. I didn't listen to the entire album until I was fourteen or so and when I did I really enjoyed it. I still listen to it every now and again just because it was my aunt's favorite album before she passed.

I think wendigoons take on the album is the most plausible, basically in the theory the lighter songs are from the POV of a guy dying of cancer and the heavier songs are from a soul guiding him to death.
