Its funny, I asked this one chick if she listens to MF DOOM and she replied with.. "Lol I don't read comic books". I thought that was the strangest and most ironic yet spot on answer ever.

This album took my a while to get into it. I had never heard an album that sounded like this before, and I only liked Accordion, Strange Ways, and All Caps when I first listened to it. This shit grew on me tremendously. I absolutely love the experimental production and DOOM's flow. This is now my favorite album of all time. If you aren't digging this album on your first listen, I completely recommend returning to it a few times.

Came back with a whole different mindset and passion for the record. It really is a landmark in hip hop, let alone modern music. Was also a big introduction to Madlib as well. One of my all time favorite producers now. 10/10

tfw I thought this album came out in 2014 and I was late to the game. Then I learned, today, that it came out in 2004 and I was super late to the party. Even now, it seems fairly progressive, so back in '04, it must've sounded insanely progressive. Amazing record-just wish I didn't first listen to it in 2017.

My favorite verse on this album is the second verse in Strange Ways. I think it's so brutally honest and brilliant, every word and line carries such a heavy weight: "They pray four times a day, they pray five Who ways is strange when it's time to survive Some will go of they own free will to die Others take em with you when they blow sky high What's the difference? All you get is lost children While the bosses sit behind the desks It costs billions to blast humans in half, into calves and arms Only one side is allowed to have bombs It's like making a soldier drop his weapon Shooting him and telling him to get to stepping Obviously, they came to portion up his fortune Sounds to me like that old robbery/extortion"

I don't know what it is about this album, but the songs on it just have some sort of magic quality separate from any other piece of music I've ever heard. The feeling i get whenever any song from this comes on, but especially accordion, meat grinder, figaro, money folder, great day, rhinestone cowboy, all caps, raid; i mean bruh. This album is just in a class by itself in my book.

One of the greatest MCs and greatest producers collab on one project it can't get any better than this. This is not your average hip hop at all , and Madvillain is not for everybody which is what makes it so great. I'm only 17 but I'm glad I found this hip hop bcz it's so refreshing to the brain, it's just really different. And this was a great review

Thomas Payne really, and an abstract hip hop album makes your top spot? Most folks fail to recognize that the majority of this (and many other hip-hip records) are just clever reconstructions of other people’s original music. In that case - this record was rather produced, before it was ever orchestrated.. I can appreciate Doom’s unorthodox style and mad-libs ear... but to call it the *greatest* album of all time (although subjective) sounds crazy to me. Especially with records like Led Zeppelin IV, Dark Side of the Moon, Diamond Life, Are you Experienced, what’s going on, White Album, Thriller, Ok Computer, Kind of Blue, Discovery, a Love Supreme, Abbey Road... etc etc Records that are all, firstly, entirely or near all-original, Culturally significant, ahead of their time, progressive, masterfully crafted and especially soulful or moving.. To each their own, but I respectfully and strongly disagree.

@@thedisappointed2530 Kind of blue is the only album that you mentioned, that I haven't heard. My comment was from 6 years ago, and my opinion has certainly changed since then. I would now put "what's going on" above "madvillainy", and probably a few others that you did not mention. But thanks for the educational lesson on a completely subjective medium of entertainment. You must be a big time artist because you are so wonderfully knowledgeable, and you really know how to put a 16 year old kid(at the time) in his place. Good for you champ.

Thomas Payne I’m not trying to bash your opinion. I’m just saying that’s quite a bold statement to make (a statement that’s still being made by others) for a record that uses *this* much of OTHER people’s music just to call itself great... we should be crediting - Contrast Sun Ra, Experience Daedulus for Accordion, Sleeping in a Jar Mother’s of Experimentation, Hula Rock, Second to None, Nardis by Bill Evans Trio, America Latina, Ninety-Nine and One Half’s Fever Tree, family affairs generation gap, Kelly Williams, Stu Phillips. The airport love theme, Mithi Mithi Ankhiyon, Freddie Hubbards Soul Turn Around, Hindu Hoon, George Dukes Prepare Yourself, Jeannine/Dr Lonnie Smith as well as In the Beginning, Sing a Simple Songs by the supremes and temptations, Funny Ways by Gentle Giant, That ain’t the way you make love by ZZ hill, So good by the whispers, “adormeccu” by O Teco, and Opening by Ironside (1968), How can you believe by Stevie Wonder, Mariana Mariana AND MORE! as much as we credit Madlib. And it’s incredible that the vast majority don’t. This list is aka every piece of original music by other artist that was used for the creation of Madvillainy or in hip hop “just a lil sample, no big deal” ... this is decades of music butchered into something new which is what invalidates itself (for me) to make the top spot.

I know right! So underrated and not heard of in general. It's just one of those albums you can listen to multiple times with a great theme and great features. Speaking of features we need more Mr.Fantastik! He was great in Anti-Matter and even better in Rapp Snitch Kniches.

I found MF DOOM through random spotify suggestions. I liked a couple singles at first, but when i tried to look at more of his stuff i didn't get hooked immediately because i was just clicking random singles from the most played on MF DOOM's spotify page. But once i actually listened to one of his albums start to finish (mm..food), i instantly became a fan, and immediately listened to like every other album of his

Madlib never used and MPC! He used an SP1200 and the Roland sp-303. If you were a fan of this album when it came out you probably would have read the review that Wax Poetics did of Madvillain in 04'. You can still look it up. Madlib states bluntly (Americas most bluntly) that EVERY beat was made on the Sp-303.
