My CANON PRO 100 Prints are fading in 2 months!

I have been running a very Unscientific Fade test for about two month using Precisioncolors ink fro the CANON PRO-100 and PRo Luster paper from CANON.
After a couple of months of Direct sunlight Attack to a special test print, I can finally begin to detect a slight bit of fading. But hardly noticeable.
The indoor tests look identical Kept in the Dark Control.
Two months of direct sunlight pretty much equals several years of normal indoor conditions and much more if the print is protected framed under glass.
Remember that ALL DYE inks will fade.
Including the expensive OEM!
But also Remember that you are refilling each PRO-100 CLI-42 cart for About fifty cents a refill!!!!!

    I actually own a ix6850 with a good CIS kit and I discovered something similar. The problem is dye tends to fade badly from UV light. You can actually fix the issue with a can of Krylon UV Clear Gloss Protectant paint. When you use matching manufacturer's ink and paper however which costs a whole lot more I've read it can provide better fade protection. So there's the downside of CIS prints. I am thinking of trying out pigment inks in a different setup thou. I've heard they provide better fade protection but lack the "brightness" of dye prints.

    It's not so much the dye I is but f this is a canon printer, a ciss is a bad idea. Of course dye inks will fade faster. But then even some pigment inks will also fade.

    Hello Jose! Thank you for all your good advice. Is the Canon PIXMA pro 100 a good printer for original artwork? I want to print on matte acid free paper of course. No. For proper watercolor art work reproduction prints you need a pigment ink printer with at least 8-9 colors. Watercolor art needs to be also be printed on inkjet Watercolor paper which requires Pigment inks using matte black ink included in the. She inks do not do a great job on Matte Watercolor paper which is what you should be using for your art prints. Epson SP P600 would be perfect for you.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't other factors like humidity, types of paper being used and if they ARE NOT using OEM ink play a big roll in this? I Noticed that pictures that have been stored away, framed in glass, or even a photo album, always look better than those kept out in the air, even with minimal sunlight. I believe it has to do with oxidation as well. I noticed this when I printed 2 pictures, same printer, same ink, same paper. I put mine in a frame, and my friend put it on his fridge with a magnet. His in 1 year has faded a HUGE amount, while mine still looks like day one.

    Thanks for this video Jose. I am currently having the same issues with my prints. I am using the Pro 100 with PC inks. Couple of days back, I have found that some of the prints made on Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II started fading unevenly within 2 months. The color deterioration was quite substantial. Most of the prints were left inside the study drawers. With all things being constant, the only difference between those prints that faded, and those that didn't, was the type of paper printed on. Those that were printed on Canon Pro Platinum held up pretty well since I've started printing 8 months ago. Almost half of those printed on the Canon Photo Paper Plus Glossy II (I've started experimenting with this paper 3 months ago) started fading badly. My preliminary guess would be the paper, as you have indicated in this video.

    OK so you should really try to get them a cheap EPSON AIO type printer for their NON Photo printing. EPSONS can be easily be used with cheap compatible carts and that way you can devote your PRO-100 for what it is intended for, creating great photos. PC inks for the PRO-100 are very good. They also provide free profiles for many papers. These come in 5 different modes depending on the viewing illumination. InkOwl and Inkjetcarts also make good inks for the PRO-100 but you will not have the free ready to use profiles.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes you certainly can do that. You will of course need two cart sets Both OEM. One loaded with PC and one loaded with OEM. But the truth is you will hardly see the difference between the two. However being as you are a photographer you will want your work to last decades and so that is what OEM ink is for. Color wise the PC ink will deliver near OEM results and after profiling or using their profiles you will have a near match to oem! The weakness of ANY 3rd party dye ink set is longevity. Even OEM canon ink will not last near as long as their or even good quality third party pigment inks.

In one house you could have light variances of 40 to 1 depending where you view the print. Again, Print on good paper without OBAs, and protect your results either by applying a good UV protecting spray and or Frame under glass.

I was abroad for a year and I left my Pixma at home and during this period I turned it on 2 times in order for the printer to clean itself. I know it's stupid but you can leave your printer for 6 months without using it and after this time it still works like wonder. I just switched some ink cartridges and printed a photo and it looks amazing, no smudges, no nothing - printer works just fine. I use OEM cartridges only of course, otherwise probably printer head would be done by now. So next time someone asks, you can give them this answer :)

    I have printed a3 size prints on canon pro lustre with PC ink mounted in a frame under glass on a wall with no direct sunlight and they fade. How do I kknow, well the perimeter 1/2" edge of the photo is covered by a cardboard surround, and when I remove this the colours on this covered edge are darker than the main photo. Unless I saw this I would not have thought the photo had faded at all. It does take a year or two for it to be noticable though. A few months is not enough. If there is any fading at all, it will continue to fade.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    Absolutely notmal. And this happens with every single 3rd party ink sold in the World. Even OEM will eventually fade. Only pigment is considered to BD semi archival. Next time apply a coat of a good ink jet print protectant spray let it fully dry and then frame it. If the paper is RC just a tip coat is needed. It is a non RC paper you need to spray front and back. But RC papers will react to uv and ozone much more negatively than non RC. Due to the Optical Brightening Agents used on their coatings. They make the results look bright....for a while.

    I have an acquaintance who is a professor of astro physics and an avid amateur photographer. He insists on RAW format but makes his prints from PDF files, reasoning that it a an Adobe product and should give the best results for storage an printng. I save RAW and a separate folder for big jpegs that I want to print. It's hard to argue with a guy who has that kind of intellectual status but I need to be practical.

    If you mean the IRON on type/// I have no clue. If you mean sublimation then NONE as the canon printers can not be used for sublimation.

    Of course. It's rated at 100 years normal display conditions. That means not sunlight but normal household illumination, in an album or under glass.

    @@cheo1949 would be great to compare how they last to now compare to a new print. Or even better to have an pigment ink comparison from done from the same time to see how much of a difference the longevity is.

As some what of an amateur ( I use to work for a couple of flexographic printing companies many years ago) I think I will stick to new or almost new equipment that are late models.

    The reason to be cautious is because Canon printheads for IPF printers basically wear out as you use them. Though itnisnvery easy for you to replace, they will set you back about $400 each and often these models have two heads. Not counting the paper drive component wearing out. If it is hardly used that also.means the heads and ink lines will also be clogged. So yet look for something as new as you afford with new in box or in tbis case, new in crate will be the most reliable way to go.
