CANON Pixma PRO 10 Best Practices

The PRO-10 Best Practices are similar to those for the PRO-1 and the PRO-100.
The biggest difference between the PRO-10 and PRO-100 is the carts. The PRO-10 PGI-72 carts do not have a sponge so they can be run till fully empty by the chip reporting. Then you will reset and top off ALL the carts OR if you have a second set of PGI-72 carts reset and filled, you can swap the complete set of one empty and 9 partially filled for the full set.
You will reduce the purge cycles from 10 to just one per exchange!

    Gracias José!, Llevo tiempo con mi Pixma Pro 10, y si, es un poco temático el cabezal, tenerlo limpio cuesta un poco de tinta. Lo sumerjo en Alcohol 99% por unos días, antes del recambio, me ha funcionado ese estilo de limpieza antes de nuevos cartuchos.

    Jose- love your videos. i am going on a 4-5 month trip. i have a pixma pro 10. i usually leave it on all the time and use Precision inks. every once in a while my power will go off. i know next week while i am still here the power company is doing a pole replacement. however there may be unplanned outages once it starts raining here or other issues while i am going. no one will have access to my printer while i am gone. what is the best way to prepare for the power to be off abruptly. the printer may be abruptly shut off and remain off all the time i am gone. thank you

    Thank you so much for your work on these videos! In other videos, I believe I heard you say to start with the OEM Inks until I get the basics so I know what the best is I can get in the way of color. During the time of using OEM inks what is the method you suggest for replacing ink cartridges as they go low. Do i get another entire set of them and swap them out or how would you suggest doing this to minimize ink loss when changing cartridges.

    @cheo1949

    With OEM always one at a time. If you are never going to refill then let them go empty. If you refill you need to accumulate two complete sets and then have them both filled with your ink of choice. Then is change them all at once when one is low. Never go below low to maintain the sponge saturate and not introduce air into it. Air with block the ink from absorbing into the sponge.

    Hi Jose, I have a Canon Pro 10S and I would like to refill it with original inks such as pfi 301 - 303, pfi 701 etc that I can find on eBay at reasonably low prices. For example, I ask you what types of ink could cover the entire ink set of the Canon Pro 10s. Which cartridges are easier to empty between pfi 702 or pfi 302 etc, leaving out that the amount of ink varies in the two types of cartridges.

    LOVE your videos! I have the 10 carts that came with my Pro-10 and I have a second set of canon cards. As per your suggestion, I will pull out all 10 carts when the first one goes empty and replace them all with the second set of canon carts that I have. If I want to transition to Precision Colors Signature Edition Inks, can I mix those with the OEM inks in the original set of carts? In other words, imagine Magenta runs out of my first set so I pull all 10 carts out and replace them with new, full cards. Can I fill the half-full cyan card with Precision Colors ink? Or do I need to let that one run out completely before filling it with Precision Colors ink? On a similar note, do I need to clean out the card before filling with Precision Colors ink? I think I'll want to transition to more affordable Precisions Color ink, but I'm just a bit confused about the process. Thanks for any information!

    Hi Jose. I had a question about inks.. I have been looking into the pro 10S and the pro 100. I am wanting to make my own art prints and make my own stickers / vinyls to sell. I was swaying towards the 10S because of the pigment inks, however I am really put off by the price of the inks and how quickly they seem to be used up, especially if you don't print every 60 hours. I thought this was my only option due to the pigment inks meaning sticks could be used on car bumpers etc and would not fade for a long time in the water and sun. But the 100 seems like a much cheaper options, especially with inks, and it sounds like for what I need, the print quality is just as good. The problem, as you know, is it's dye based and I know this would fade within days on my stickers. My question is, do you think using the 100 / dye based inks is still just as good if I was to spray the prints or stickers with a hard enamel fixative, or is this in no way a replacement for using pigment inks? Also are the websites that sell cheaper ink replacements generally as good for the most part or have you found there is an obvious difference in colours and quality? Thanks so much in advance, this stuff is driving me crazy.

    I have zero experience with printing to vinyl with regular inks. As far as I know you will never be able to achieve that longevity that you have when using solvent-based inks that's the only proven process for outdoor use where your decals your work is going to be exposed to the elements. Of course some sort of spray may work but I cannot guarantee that

    Hi Jose, many thanks for sharing your expertise! What is your recommended procedure for a transition between the OEM and non-OEM inks: refilling the carts one-by-one as soon as these become empty or refilling the whole sets of carts (like after transition)? If the whole sets of carts are refilled the OEM and non-OEM inks will be mixed within the carts, which will lengthen the transition period (and even may cause other issues if the inks are not "compatible"). During the transition period the color reproduction will likely be not quite accurate due to varying inks mixing (that makes profiling useless). However, if the carts are refilled one-by-one (to shorten the transition) the amount of waste inks will likely be higher due to more frequent refillings/cleaning cycles (can this be just ignored?). Only if the color of non-OEM inks exactly matches that of the OEM inks the mixing should not be an issue. BTW: do you think that PC inks of the 2nd generation for Pro 10 are good enough in this respect (I expect the newest signature edition should be perfect)?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    6 жыл бұрын

    If you want to have the quickest transition then you can empty and flush the PRO-10 carts with water, using an adapted that www.octoinkjet.co.uk sells then you can load those carts with a bit of PC inks, shake, suck it out with the adapter and filly fill with PC inks. One Cleaning cycle and you are good to go. The one cart at a time will take for ever to transition.

    I think I've seen this video at least 10 times in the last 15 months. I finally understand everything you are saying. The last thing I didn't understand was about the waste pads. I finally feel ready to boot up the printer for the first time. I've been slowly buying my photo paper, precision color refill kit, and second set of ink carts and importing it to S. Korea. It has been a long journey. Thanks!! Can you think of any negative effects of mixing OEM inks and Precision Color Signature inks when refilling carts (for Pro 10, CLI 72)? Also, would you advise avoiding borderless printing when possible so that overspray doesn't lead to more ink going to the waste pads?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    5 жыл бұрын

    There won't be any negative reactions transitioning from OEM PGI72 o PC. Since you can let them go to empty beforenresetting and refilling there will be very reaction when filling with PC. No yellow problem either. Avoid printng borderless and realize the printer will run a cleaning cycle every 60 hours from the last cleaning. If a cleaning cycles occurs right now, you can print as much or as little for the next 60 hours without a pre print cleaning cycle so take advantage of that 60 grace period. By the way I served in S. Korea with the Army.

    @@cheo1949 Thanks Jose. I really appreciate the response. And thank you for serving in South Korea. I am a Korean-American who was originally born in South Korea, but grew up in California. Now I'm back in South Korea 25 years later as a foreigner in my native country where I am raising a family. And it wouldn't be such a great place if it weren't the US army and the people who served here. As for the Pro 10, I am 100% sure if it weren't for your videos, this experience would have been a complete disaster. I thought I'd buy a nice pro-ish printer, learn about printing, print off a large print here and there, and save some money eventually after a few years. I've learned it definitely is a lot more involved than that. And in general, the self-photo-printing industry has sharply declined just in the last year in South Korea. PGI-72 OEM inks are getting difficult to get at a reasonable price without having to import from overseas. And Canon photo printer costs about 4x more here believe it or not. Luckily, I have family visiting me in South Korea and I've been having them bring over Canon photo paper, OEM inks, PC inks, etc.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    5 жыл бұрын

    No one has done an actual test to see by actual wight, how much ink is used. But it is about 1-2 Total ink among all ten carts. It also depends on the length of the cleaning cycle which varies depending on how many hours passed between the previous on and the next one triggered by printing something. Printing does not stop them but say you just had a cleaning occur at 12 noon and you do not print for 60 hours and five minutes later you print something, a 60 hours cleaning cycle will be triggered. If you did not print next until 120+ hours then it will be larger and so on through 240 and 480 hours which would be the largest volume wise.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    2 жыл бұрын

    B200 error has nothing whatsoever to do with a print head requiring a cleaning. It is a communication with the printer issue and not something an external cleaning can fix. You need a new printhead. Unfortunately a brand new one in box will set you back $250. Do not remotely consider a refurbished unit. You can not really refurbish thermal printheads regardless claims you may hear. Canon printheads are actually being used up as you use them. They are wearing out. In the case of B200 that is a different issue altogether.

    Hi there! Three questions! I‘m about to buy the Pro 10s, but I‘m going to be away from home during the week days and will only be home at weekends, so I will surpass those 60 hours every week. It will be like that for about 4 months - then I‘m back home during the whole week again. 1. Is it too bad if I print „only“ every weekend during those 4 months? 2. How exactly should I store my printer when I‘m away? Any tips for that? 3. Can I just start printing photos when I‘m back at weekends or should I do something before printing photos? I‘ll be using OEM ink, so I won‘t be refilling or so. I‘ll always be replacing the single cart(s) that goes empty.

OR....just don't get the printer just yet and get it when you can devote more time to it on those 60 hours or less schedules.

If you can live with a tiny bit less red gamut reach then you can use the complete SE set. Watch my recent video report on the inks vs 100% OEM inks. Every single other ink set I've used for the PRO-1 and PRO-10 is sub standard!

    When refilling, is a gram scale necessary? If I were to, using a refilling tool as you made, inject 15-17 cc of ink and then drip onto the sponge until the gravity feed slows, stopping there, would that work well? It seems like the only thing the gram scale adds is a ball park number when the bag is getting full, or am I missing something? Are extra orange caps for the cartridges available on Ebay? Did you have to buy an entire cartridge to obtain? Thanks for the fine explanations and the work on the videos. I am looking at the p600, p800, pro 1000 and the pro 10. None is perfect it seems, but the pro 10 comes close when refilling of the small cartridges is a viable option--at least to me.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    You can refill the Pro 10 cartridges by eye but if the bag is contracted and only allowing you to drip a certain amount of ink it will look like it's full but it really is not and the only way to verify that your cartridge contains the correct amount is to use a gram scale. Now with the adapter that I have made you can actually not only contract the bag to prep it for refilling or directly inject like you said 15 to 16ml of ink and dribble a few drops till visually full. That should be accurate enough. Good Gram scales are only about $8 on Amazon. They do come in handy for refilling other opaque carts.

    Other than making sure the chip is clean and the cart is properly installed, all you can do at this time is try to check for that and reinsert the cart. Maybe power off the printer and pull the plug for a few minutes and then re plug and power back on. If all fails and you have a local Office Supply store that may have a Printer and ink department, get a replacement Red cart. Then on Monday call CANON and tell them what you had to do and they will likely send you a new ed cart.

    Unless you have a second set of carts at the ready you can just do one at a time. The point is to avoid the domino effect and only generate one purge cycle every month or two instead of a full purge cycle every few days which is what will happen if you simply replace one at a time. You will be constantly changing carts. Get your PGI-72 carts from anyone. There are all ok. There is not specific supplier. These are just folks who do not refill selling off their empties because they know they have some value.

    Hi Joe, just received my Pro-10s and closely followed your videos thank you. I’m using a Mac again I took your advice and downloaded the latest version of the software and drivers, not letting the iMac download. I printed the recommended test tiff file via photoshop cc, no changes allowing the printer to manage colours. Printing on Canon Platinum the first print lacked reds. I then printed without photo shop and the print seems to have printed correctly a little dull maybe compared to the screen ( brightness is probably too high). I can’t get Photoshop to accept the plugin for Printpro, tried a number of times without success, any suggestions my friend? Many thanks Steve.

    First of all you monitor is not calibrated and too bright and Leaning toward the bluish side. I-Macs are notorious for that. Plus even after calibration they can never be brought to the correct luminosity and linearity as a stand along display. Secondly, the standard image is only meant to be printed and that is it. You can not really compare it to the monitor since it will definitely not be displayed correctly anyway. The standard is considered perfect and it only used to verify your printer's ability to print it crrectly. Your printer will print it to the maximum gamut IT can produce which is always less than most images, specially the PRO Photo RGB color space ones which that image is. So the image will always out do what the printer can Produce! To install PSP manually you can try this which as showed in this video but remember I use Windows. I have no problem with true PSP pro on Windows 10. kzread.info/dash/bejne/h6l1ms1uht29k8Y.html

    You really cannot answer that question because inks are used at different rates. They're not all used equally and each cartridge holds 16 milliliters of ink. Each letter size print requires about 2 ml of TOTAL ink. That figure will change depending on the type of image so again there's no way to answer that

    Estimado amigo Jose, vi que tenía un canal en español, y que alivio porque mi inglés no va al 100%. Dos preguntas. En cuanto a la respuesta que me dio, lo que intentaba preguntar o saber, que tanto es el flujo de cambio o recarga de tinta, teniendo en cuenta que diariamente se imprime fotos grandes A3 por ejemplo. Queremos saber si es rentable usar esta impresora para nuestro negocio. Por que nos estaban ofreciendo una epson L1800 que nos dicen que son muy comerciales y que la tinta dura mas que en otras impresoras. A pesar de ello, estamos enamorados de la calidad de esta canon. En conclusión, Ud. que imprime tanto y tiene experiencia en ello, que tanto, cada cuanto tiempo recarga las tintas, sea para cualquier cartucho porque tengo entendido que unos se gastan mas que otros. La otra pregunta es, porque dejo de subir videos en español, la comunidad latina espera. Gracias por el apoyo abrazos

    Hi Jose, Thank you so much for all advices you provide. I’m still struggling with the choice between Pro-10 and Pro-1. I don’t plan to print a lot or to sell my prints and at this time to use third party inks. Pro-10S is about 100 € cheaper than the Pro-1 here in France, but obviously I’m afraid of Pro-1 cartridges cost. My work is mainly black and white (street photography) and I’d like to use baryta papers to mimic the silver prints I used to make back in the old days. My question is : should I choose the Pro-1 over the Pro-10 from a quality point of view ?

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    6 жыл бұрын

    If affordability is your worry then the pro-10 is your best choice. Remember photo printing is not cheap and already you are setting yourself up by worrying about Ink costs. You already know you will be going going to other inks and so you will see a quality change you may or may not be able to accept. Your only refilling choice is to reset and fill your original carts. Not compatibles!!!! Go to www.octoinkjet.co.UK for what you will need for the PRO-10

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    6 жыл бұрын

    No I did not. The difference between the two ink sets is that the PRO-1 has one extra gray, there is not that much difference. DO you need 17 x 22 or can you get buy with 13x19? Both will produce about equal results from most common baryta fine art papers. They will have to be fed through the manual feed an you will have to accept a minimum 30-35 mm leading and trailing edge border plus other settings such as possibly abrasion prevention as these papers have very very delicate surface coatings.

    I can't wait for the signature print set for my pro 10!! However I still have a hefty supply of the PRO 10 gen 2 inks. It will probably be another year or so before I exhaust that supply. Damn it. I do however have spare carts if I want to try out the new sig inks. I'll just need to use them like premium unleaded petrol... I do love the pro 10. it is easy to refill and the learning curve is the shortest. It is however so freaking slow!!! That still not a deal breaker if you are dedicating this printer to photo printing tho.

    None of the ink sets currently available for the PRO-10 provide the gamut that OEM red and magenta can produce. This new Ink sets will come very close. Will not be a perfect 100% match as that is virtually imposible, and if you are very picky then you would need to buy OEM red, and possibly magenta. Black bronzing effect is paper specific. Most good quality third party pigment Black specially photo black tends to be overly glossy and often a bit too and have a Metallic or bronzing sheen but that will disappear after a light coat of glossy print UV spray which should be considered if you want to bring longevity to the OEM levels. Another problem with third party canon inks is that there is no Chroma Optimizer available or custom made that can come close to OEM! That is why I will not hesitate to use a light coat of spray. Any gloss differential or bronzing will virtually disappear.

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    PC has decided to recommend that you use OEM red to overcome the unreachable levels of the OEM red. The basic visual testing I've done with standard images and some gamut testing images do show the inability of the current available red formulations. Believe me PC is well aware of that. There is not other red ink formulation that can perform as the OEM red. Custom formulated or generic. What I will often do is sub whatever colors I am not satisfied with OEM. I only use OEM CO. When I test the pro-10 / 1 inset I will test it on my PRO-10 because I can very efficiently push out previous inks and after one cleaning I can be sure I am working with the ink being tested. Not so with the PRO-1!! I will test 100% OEM. I will test the new PC ink set and it will test the new PC ink set but include OEM red. All using OEM profiles We will see the results then! The goal is a great performing AFFORDABLE ink set that comes close to OEM and at the same time saves the user tons of money. If you need top performance I would recommend nothing but OEM inks. I see that with EVERY single ink set I've ever tested. NONE will perform at OEM levels. Hopefully this one will come close to satisfy even the pecky user. And trust me I am picky!

  • @cheo1949

    @cheo1949

    They have the best red they could possible use. It will be part of the ink set. Again only if you are really picky and do direct OEM vs PC will you see any differences. If you print a lot of B&W it will not matter at all. Unless your images contain ridiculous reds which would be out of gamut for most if not ALL third party systems, you will be very happy with these upcoming inks. Of course I will not know until I get my hands on a set.

I get my ink from precision colors and use the colormunki to profile papers and my inks. But the last prints have been off. Its like this..... the pic is of a sky which is blue on my screen, and when I go to print, the first milimeter on the paper is blue,,,but then it changes to like a lighter shade of purple blue. Theres a clear line of transition from blue to the off color. So I tried it again, and the same thing. Its like the printer knows what to print color wise,,,but changes it as soon as it gets into it. I tried the same photo on my epson pro 4000 and its perfect. Ive NEVER had an issue with the pro 10 before.Ever heard of this happening.

    Nozzle check is perfect??? I would check to make sure you do not have an ink delivery problem. Starts perfect and then it can't keep up. If you are a member of my Face Book Group, I would tell you to download my Test Image pack and then print this one "Nice hi-res printer test" and carefully check the gradients to see if they match the image. Any ink starvation will immediately become evident. If that is the cast then you need a new cart for that particular color, possibly the CYAN of PHOTO CYAN.
