In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
- 300 Blackout Winchester USA Ready 125gr Open Tip Training Ammo
- Ruger American Ranch chambered in 300 Blackout with a 16 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Several of the other failed 300 Blackout rounds Ive seen him test perform 100% different inside wild game I don't put much faith into these bare gel tests and Im not even a 300 Blackout fanboy I know this particular round tends not to expand or explode inside wildlife it's a target load...

Most Manufacturers don't use a 16" for 300blk. Normally 13.9-14.5" barrels. This stuff is currently selling for 64cpr btw.

Winchester plays games with terminology. They used OPE for open point expanding on some of their hollow points decades ago. The .30-30 150 grain JHP you recently tested used to be labeled OPE.

Agreed. I have young boys and want to get them into shooting. But noise, recoil are holding them back from using bigger calibers. I am thinking a 300blackout with a suppressor would make a great starter rifle for my boys to deer hunt. 🦌 here in central maine shots are not long as we have very dense woods. 50to 100yards is the norm. Can't see why this wouldn't make a great little hunting rig on a doe,or small buck for their first hunt.

For 300 blackout one of my favorite and one of the most best books I found four hand loading would be the Hornady 110 or 125grn option. If you load him right there just downright Dynamite.

These test make me reconsider what I know about bullets. I suspect it is all about velocity. The faster the bullet the tougher it needs to be. The lower the velocity the weaker it needs to be.

To a point absolutely, just depends on intended use. For example, there’s a place and use for hard-cast lead 45-70 loads going relatively slow, intended use maximum penetration with no expansion whatsoever.

You're doing God's work with these 300 Black Out test videos. 300 Black Out is the round of the future. Soon the military will be chambering all battle rifles in 300 Black Out as well as machine guns and pistols. Getting as much info as we can now on this round will help us when that day comes.

I'm not sure, but I believe you are seeing higher Velocity because they are probably testing it in a 10" barrel. If I remember right when 300 AAC Black Out came out, it was designed to shoot a 220g bullet out of a 9" suppressed barrel. I like the 300 Black Out it is a reloders dream, everything from a 78g to a 245g bullet Supersonic to Subsonic. I have a Ruger American and an AR-15 with a 14.5" barrel and a 2.5" muzzle brak welded on the muzzle. Both of them are very accurate rifles.

  • @jorgesolis9468

    @jorgesolis9468

Yes with subsonic weak ammo you're right another reason was that it was designed to mimic 7.62x39 so 124 at 2500 in 300 it would be 125 gr at 2200-2300 with 16 inch barrel so subsonic is fine for 9 inch barrels and 2 legged threats with game in mind go 16 inches and there will be a 200 fps advantage

Thank you for your very informative gel tests, I enjoy every one and often go back and re-watch some. I was always hoping the 300 blackout or other intermediate 30 cal would be developed into a 30-30 performance round for the short, light, handy bolt rifles . Sadly so far anyways, the 300 blackout is short of that. The 7.62 x 39 is closer, but still not quite there. I was hoping for more velocity from the 150 grainers in the 300 blackout. It would be nice to see what 150 grain bullets can do in the 7.62 x 39 if only Remington, Federal, or Winchester would come out with some. Granted the bore size is a tad different- .310ish vs .308. I have some Federal 123 soft points for my 7.62 x 39 Ruger ranch but I would like to see a bit deeper penetration if possible without having to go to a bigger round. The Liberty 300 blackout overwatch load looks interesting....

😂 great point. Some reviews make it seem like the bullet or caliber are doing the work. But as you know....any caliber is only accurate if you practice, practice and practice some more. My rifles especially the 350legend ar15 20inch is picky. Some I can't group worth bleep, 4inch or more(150grain copper impact). But 160grain bonded powermax hollow point groups 1.5inches at 100yards. 150 deer season xp is just at 2 inches. So know your rifle, practice and try rounds that you can easily repeat results with

I’d have to test it a little more to trust it for deer.. maybe replicate bone and skin in front of the block and repeat.. I’ve seen wooden dowel Rods used that seemed to work well. 3/4-1”.. They make another .300BLK 125gr open tip range “target” ammo with the exactly same specs as what is shown on the back of your box but instead of being in a read box and marked as “Ready” they are in a white box and seem to have a slightly different OTM design! I noticed the ones used seemed to have a ridge on the tip where as these have what seems to be a small pie like design inside the tip of the OTM match bullet! I am very interested to see if the Winchester ready read box OTM range is the same as the Winchester OTM white box! They are both 125gr and have exactly the right specs if anyone knows please let me know I am am rather perplexed 🧐🤔
