In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
- 300 Blackout Hornady Black 110 grain VMAX
- Ruger American Ranch chambered in 300 Blackout with a 16 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

I just took out a big Buck at 200+ yards with this round in a 9” MCX. Heart shot, and blew through the exit leg too. Was quite surprised how well it did. Definitely a good hunting round so long as you’re a good shot
@masonleather We tested .300 blk on large whitetail does this season. We won't be using it again to hunt for meat. Why? It absolutely EXPLODES once it penetrates the hide. I'm talking no exit wound, or just a tiny hole from the core...it fragments, yaws, and obliterates the torso. Messiest field dressings I've ever done. If it nicks a bone, the mess is much worse. Great for coyotes and I'll be seeing what it does to hogs. Our shots here in Ozarkistan are usually inside 200yds. It's my new home defense/truck and chore gun round as it has devastating instant kill ability on large mammals with little or no overpenetration risk. I've been shooting half a century, almost a decade as a US Army Light Infantry Squad Leader. This is the first round I've ever been excited about. We used to unofficially train soldiers to take head and pelvis shots with the 55grain 5.56 and 20"barrels because the "ice pick effect" was well known even in the Vietnam War. Out to 200yds, I don't believe there is a more effective round. Especially when you can achieve optimal results in a "8-10" barrel. I've hit silhouettes at 400yds using a 3x Primary Arms prism site. This round and compact weapons system i.e a braced pistol, with a light, should be everyone's home defense round. PSA sells AAC .300 blk with the same bullet at great prices...I highly recommend it.
I generally like Vmax loads for home defense on 556 and 300 blackout weapon systems. That instant dissipation of energy onto the target is really effective without over penetration.
Oi! Great video mate. I'm looking for similar a loading just now here in Oz...it's a fallow deer thing... Have a super day!
I use this ammo in my Remington 700 1 in 7 twist it's a tact driver and I shoot Fallow deer with it. It is super effective at 100 to 170m so far. Yet to have a shot at 200m but so far, with what I've experienced I wouldn't hesitate. I use 190grain subs and the Fallow deer drop good at 70 m but use that mainly for Bush stalking which is normally up close and personal max 50m normally around 25m. With using the 110g black, vmax and 190 sub black, I sight in with 110 at 50m the 190 is about 250mm lower but directly in line of the 110 point of impact. I would have no worries shooting a Red deer at the same range. We can shoot all year round here in NZ no seasons or stags only as they are a considered a pest here so to get out and do it is not a problem. Cheers Brett
I have been skeptical about those power point 110 grain bullets. I was impressed with the 30 carbine 110 soft point round nose gelatin test. The penetration was good and deformation was good. Old school. I still have to reload the bullets and check out any feeding problems, before hunting with them. 😊
My best friends dad got a 7pt buck two weekends ago with a 14.5" AR in .300 blackout using AAC's 110gr Vmax load. We chrono'd it at 2,400 FPS as well. Terminally it mushroomed perfectly from a rearward-angled diagonal shot (not perfectly broadside) at 50 yards maybe a bit more, through all vitals, nice quarter sized exit hole from the chest cavity and the bullet got caught right there in the hide next to it. Solid foot and a half of penetration, no actual full pass through. The projectile had more of its base intact than it did from your testing, it definitely retained more weight at 50 through mushy vitals than it did close in gel. Didn't hit meat on that shot as well, worth noting. Probably caught a rib or two but the projectile looked amazingly uniform in its expansion if it did.
Wow that is a GNARLY round!
Looks like this series is done. I'm planning on hunting whitetail next year with a .300 blk. I have a 110 and 120 grain Barnes bullet, as well as a 97 grain liberty. Would've been really cool to see them.
First video I’ve seen of yours. I really like the clear concise facts you give. Subbed

Wow, I think this would be a great home defense round. Curious how it would do in a 8-10” barrel. Thanks for all your videos!

I bet it would actually perform better for home defense out of the shorter barrel because it wouldn't grenade instantly at such shallow depths.

My grandson and I just put down doe at 70 and 90 yards with 110 V-max, each ran about 25 yards. Heavy blood trail.
I’ve knocked a buck with this load, right behind shoulder tan 10yr and was done. It’s effective
Excellent concise video thanks for the info
Another great video, just picked up a couple of boxes to see if my CVA scout with a 16” barrel likes it or not and how it will group with them. There is a couple of other.300 blk rounds I would love to see tested in the gel blocks. One being the 125 gr serria game king gamechanger. The other one is defiant munitions 110 grain full copper bullet, it looks like a nasty .300 blk round with petals that open. I appreciate all the testing you do on this caliber as well as all the others
I have found it very very good on goats. Not big animals but it zaps them out to 200 meters. Rifle is a 16 1/2 Bergara b13. Kills better than the heavier rounds
Nice vid. All the other 300 black tests I've seen will this bullet were not or less textbook perfect. I was sure I've seen other 16" tests, but now I'm second guessing my memory. There are plenty of posts of people taking deer with this bullet in 300 Bo. Nosler varmageddon typically perform similarly.
Great video!
Nice, informative results. Why don't you make a video of the 125gn Hornady SST? it should probably penetrate & expand well, with good weight retention too. If you don't want to reload, I think Fiocchi has 300 blackout factory ammo with it.
Great video. Well done on testing ammo..though of doing aac blackout 125 grain black tip ammo .be cool see
I took my whitetail buck with this load last year, shot was at 50 yards and unfortunately I grazed a rather large branch that sent the bullet into the spine, it dropped where it stood and a second shot dispatched, I found just very small bullet fragments so I have switched to power shok or fusion which is the same bullet in this caliber.

Do you have the name weight of that round?
Can we see a test on the Barnes 110 grain or 120 grain Tac-TX? Your test protocols are the best I’ve seen.
Great 300blk vid! Maybe not medium game but it looks like one helluva bipedal load though.
I took down an 11 pint buck with it this year. I see that there could be a problem if you have poor shot placement and hit a shoulder blade. I agree that you don't want to be making long shots with this cartrage if you're using it for medium game.

I hit a shoulder. Just nicked it. The round was like a dum dum bullet exploding. Messiest field dressing I ever did. She ran about 80yds downhill and dropped dead in about 5 seconds. See my detailed comment on our testing.
Bought a few boxes and didn't feed reliable in any of my rifles and i was using 300blk specific mags . Chocked it up to bad batch because I have never had any issues with a wide variety of different ammos
I would like to see a test on the 110gr CX Hornady loads!!
Slammed a huge 8-point with a 110 GMX, Doe with the 150 Deer Season. Buck was quartering towards, jumped brush then laid over. Doe was quartering away, ran 20 with a 1' wide trail, slid 20, done. Fragmentation to heart. Curious on any FTX data. Should instantly expand like V-Max and then push through like 150gr tipped
Ive used this round out of my 16" for coyotes and they do the trick. Planed on taking a hog but didn't get a chance at one. 🤞Next time.
I use mostly 110 grain vmax but I also use up to 150 grain bullets also. I like to stick to the Same Weight bullets so that I can zero in my sights and not get to much of a difference in accuracy from different weights. I don’t hunt but hell yea it will do just fine for home defense. Hell even .22lr cci stingers will work just fine in home defense also.
My daughter just dropped a 200 lbs buck with this load out of a 7.5" AR. He was inside 50 yards, and she put the shot right through his boiler room, but he was DRT.
I have created a full combat loadout based on this round. (don't worry, I have a 5.56 upper and ammo to fall back on) Shorter ranged defense tool setup.
Why does it say for a 20 round magazine? I don’t have 20’s. Will full size 30 round mags fit in the mag cuff?
Seems like a good choice for two or four legged varmints!
Try the barnes 110 or 120 gr tac TX or liberty ammo 95 gr.
Would love to see a test on .300 BO using Fort Scott TUI 115gr.
Hornady discontinued the 110 grain V max. So if you can find some for a good price, grab them up.
I've taken several whitetails with 110gr VMax 300BLK . The whole 800ft-lbs of energy is total B.S, I've shot several whitetails with 190gr SubXs and 195gr Cavity back bullets out to 150yds and most don't go 50 yards. It's 100% shot placement.

so for you what is the best 300blk weight for white tail?
@frankiecrouch3918
6 ай бұрын
@victordespradel4281 If I am hunting with supersonics I am going to use the 110gr Barnes TacTX and I'm shooting subsonic I am using 195gr Cavity Back Bullets MKZ. Those are in my opinion the best 300BLK Bullets
I think 300blk supersonic performance really requires the use of 110-125gr bullets to get above 2000 fps. It is likely the manufacturers are just using 308 bullets, so the extra slow heavier loads do not perform as expected. The lighter loads are still going slow enough to not explode and still get penetration
I will try this round to hunt deer this fall. I have seen a few hunters dropping deer in their tracks with this round.
I would love to see a test with the Barnes 120 grain hollow point.

Same. Can’t find a single test.
I think the Hornady VMax is a great hunting/self defense bullet out of shorter 300 BLK barrels with lower velocities. The Hornady SST would be better out of longer 300 BLK barrels at higher velocities.
Not too bad. Perhaps this is acceptable for deer. Definitely good for self defense . Thank you.
I’d say that worked as advertised.
I am thinking about using this as a home defense round for my SBR 🤔

I found for deer 120-125 is the sweet spot
Could you do some 6.5 Grendel tests?? Been thinking and wanting to try it out as a deer only gun on an AR15 platform.

I have a 12.5" Faxon 6.5G that is going to be my deer/hog gun. But I haven't shot anything except targets yet. Would love to see what various ammo is capable of from a shorter barrel first.
I use these in a 12" AR. They're 100fps slower, but they are devastating on coyote
Great test and vid as usual. Wouldn't be my first choice for deer but if you shot a deer in the heart/lungs from less than 100 yards, that is going to be a dead deer. Definitely wouldn't go for a shoulder shot.
Try 110 Barnes.
Should definitely try the 125gr sst from hornady. I've used it and it works quite well.

2:50 🔥
I used to have a single shot in tne caliber. I used Barnes VOR-TX 110 grain tipped solid copper hollow point , BUT I kept this same Hornady round in case of human predators. I know what kind of damage it does. I wanted the Barnes VOR-TX for hogs, etc. Anyone running an AR in 300 BLK should have these for defense purposes there srd better bullets for hunting deer and hogs than these.
125gr sst is a good medium load.
300blk Barnes load any?

Barnes loads a 110 vor-tx that work’s awesome on deer
The box looks like the Metallica black album 😂🤘🤘
👍👍
Ever seen a watermelon explode taking a high powered round? I suspect that would be the result of anything smaller than a cayote with this and a large chunk of the coyote too.
Do you think 300 blk has enough power and penetration to stop a bear during a bear attack
