In this video we’re going to do a ballistics gel test and review of the following hunting ammunition fired from the following test rifle:
- 300 Blackout Winchester Silver Tip Defense Tip 150gr
- Ruger American Ranch chambered in 300 Blackout with a 16 inch barrel
All shots are fired from a distance of 100 yards so as to encompass the majority of common real world hunting scenarios.
I will be shooting into 10% ballistics gel from www.clearballistics.com that has been calibrated to meet the FBI ballistics testing protocol.
While ballistics gel isn’t an exact proxy for big game, small game, predators or defensive situations, it does provide a repeatable medium through which to test various bullets and ammunitions against each other.
With each type of ammo tested I collect data on bullet penetration depth, bullet weight retention, bullet expansion and muzzle velocity.
For reference, bullet expansion is measured at the widest expanded point using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Caliper.
Bullet weight is measured using a calibrated Frankford Arsenal Digital Scale after having removed as much ballistics gel as possible from the expanded bullets.
Bullet velocity is measured using a ProChronoPal chronograph set approximately 7-10’ from the shooting bench, depending on the cartridge and muzzle blast.
I am fully aware that a chronograph measuring bullet velocity from 10’ away from the muzzle is going to register a slower velocity than if velocity were measured directly at the muzzle, but that difference is going to be so small as to be all but irrelevant in regards to comparison of actual measured velocity versus factory stated velocity.
My goal with these ballistics gel tests is to provide hunters like you and I with the most objective information possible to help us make the best choice for our particular hunting situation.
The results of these tests are my own and I cannot guarantee the same or similar performance on your part. The views and opinions expressed in this video are solely my own.
All videos are filmed in a safe and controlled environment on a private range with all applicable safety precautions by a trained professional.

Can you imagine if Lapua, Nosler, Weatherby, or Norma put brass like that on the market? Hahaha It's like some grunge brass band that's been playing music around a humid nuclear fallout zone.

There component brass is decent. Their ammo is crap typically. I don’t buy their rifle ammo cause I hate trimming the brass with their stupid crimp

As a reloader I've found out that 300 blackout is a little on the finicky so I don't want bullet way to use for example 147's out of a 16-inch I can't get them to FMJ I can't get them to group worth a damn but 208 grain subs shoot a really tight group and it's stupid quiet

Maybe it’s an older box of ammunition? I know Hornady suspended the use of nickel plated brass during peak ammo shortages, maybe Winchester did too?

I think their "higher end" calibers are still using the nickel-plated brass. They are probably using bulk .223 brass for their 300 blk

Hey Mason, absolutely loving the 300 blackout ammunition testing series! Ive been looking at using 190gr hornady SubX 300 blackout for hunting. I was wondering if you have plans are would be interested in testing this ammunition as i am curious on how it will perform.

I’ve already tested it, I’ve got nearly 100 more videos filmed and in editing. It did better than some other SUB-X loads I’ve tested but I wouldn’t hunt medium game with it, little expansion and barely more energy than a 9mm pistol target load.

Moving way too slow to be effective. These bullets are made for 308,30-06, 300 mag etc. They are hitting at 100 yards with what those other calibers are bringing at 400+.

Well, when we see flaky results on 2 similar loads from the same maker, we are inclined to believe they put this on the market with a flaky attitude and are just pushing for more market share by having 2 offerings that are near clones after all is said and done.

Lol, that’s what the boomers said in 2009. It’s cheaper and more widespread than it’s ever been. And with PDWs becoming more popular, so will 300BLK. Also doesn’t hurt that it’s getting military contracts.
