Much Better Than A Prado! (Lexus GX Overtrail 2024 Review)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Detailed review and test of the 2024 Lexus GX550 Overtrail, including off-roading, handling, V6 engine, specs and more.
The new Lexus GX is a luxury iteration of the Land Cruiser Prado (250 Series). It uses a 260kW 3.4-litre twin turbo petrol V6 engine rather than a diesel. A hybrid is coming.
Compared to rivals like the Audi Q7, BMW X5 and Volvo XC90, the Lexus GX is a true off-roader. But that has positives AND negatives. Let's explore them.

    The specs of the Overtrail variant clearly shows this is targetted at those who'd like to take their GX off-road. And anyone who really goes touring/overlanding, never really carry more than 5 passengers (most rarely carry more than 2). Having extra rear cargo space more important - making 3rd row seats useless. They'll just take up room and add dead weight. So IMO, Lexus got it right.

    Speak for yourself. I’ll be picking up an overtrail and adding the third row in myself. A) I want the flat rear floor and B) I want to be able to take the occasional friend or two for my kids when needed. Otherwise they’ll be folded away unless needed.

    Excellent review of the GX550. It looks like the off-road course they built had dried up, by this time. Good on you for getting that footage! Many of the other reviewers didn't get that footage. This SUV is a beast.

    The majority of the market acquiring this vehicle for off road and overtrail purposes prefer storage space over third row seating. If third row seating is a priority for you, there are two other specs that provide that feature. Those are the ones for you.

    Yeah, this would be a pretty good replacement for a Disco 4. Expensive no matter how you look at it, though $80K in 2014 with all the inflation we’ve had was the equivalent of $100K in 2023.

    I think Toyota did their research well, as most drivers who opt for the Overtrail, are likely to actually take their GX offroad. And if they do, the rear is generally crammed with gear, or like me, rear drawers, fridge, & fridge cage etc. I removed the 3rd row seats on my Landcruiser to save weight and have more space. This is the exact same reason the new Prado GR Sport will only be a 5-seater (from what I've read).

  • @brydenhall2258
    @brydenhall22585 ай бұрын

    Agreed. It would sure be nice to have a luxury off roader. If you want true overlander, then that’s where the Toyota Land Cruiser comes in. Would be nice to see the over trail with an option for true leather seats, pano roof and an option for three rows , if you want it. I would consider buying the luxury, but it loses all the off-road capabilities, but most importantly, it loses, EKDSS. So I’m a little frustrated that there is not a few more options either on the luxury or over trail.

I never see anyone using them… 😂 it’s a shame the sports luxury will have 22 inch wheels.. I’ll have to buy this before we get any hybrid and EV nonsense. Then stop buying new vehicles at all. A much better product than any Range Rover still using their supercharged v8 whining its guts out or just breaking down electrically all the time… 😂

    Not sure why you draw any comparisons to the European SUVs it's an irrelevant comparison and anyone thinking this is anything other than a 4x4 is a fool. It's in the vain of a G wagon not an X5 and that seems to be the point of the cars design so comparison with soft roaders is pointless. Do you believe your viewers are that daft?

  • @chasingcars

    @chasingcars

    I think you’re confused about the point of comparisons: they *compare* the strengths and weaknesses of different vehicles. In this video, I compare the GX to other Land Cruisers, and also to car-based rivals. GX customers will come from both camps. That’s clear from the data on deposit-holders in Australia. If you think every GX buyer is buying the car because of its 4WD capability, you’re dead wrong.

    @@chasingcars I put highway tires on my pickup that had all terrains and felt like I got a whole new suspension. I think the point not to compare apples to oranges is valid. An X5 might be in the same pool of the market but it's fundamentally different. It's what is being achieved and what is offered on this offroad vehicle that sets it apart. These aspects are highlights of achievement, not comparative downsides to a different machine in the X5. I understand the intent was to provide the consumers reflected in the data some understanding of the differences. It just came off like all the deliberate and highly executed features in this vehicle were somehow "weaknesses." That said, this is still one of the best-produced videos on this vehicle. Thank you.
