I'm running the SRAM 11-36T on a GRX 2x11 build. Runs fine with 2 turns of the B screw compared to the 11-32T I run with road tyres. Range is 48x11 4.36 to 31x36 0.86 and you keep the tight spacing.

When I built my 'monstercross' bike (steel frame drop bar bike with 2.1 inch mtb tyres and wheels) I lost many hours of my life I will never recover working out the best way to get ultra wide range for my bikepacking trips. I dont mind the weight as long as I've got the gearing to see me over the off road mountain climbs, and my camping gear is heavy. I have found in Scotland last year I literally needed the 30t 52t ratio quite a bit surprisingly. I ended up getting the ratio technologies mod to use Sram Eagle with Rival shifters and have never regretted this decision, I did consider this exact setup but needed that tiny bit more range and low end. Now the time is approaching after 3600 miles where i've got to replace it in a month or two and the GX eagle cassette costs nearly as much as the Garbaruk! Many thanks for showing it off, I would really appreciate a long term abuse test though because I worry about investing in wearable parts beyond the mid tier I usually go for, and I tend to stick with what I know even if Sram takes me for a fool charging what they are asking at this point for a pinned together cassette.

Recently I bought some Garbaruk parts after I have been using a Garbaruk oval chainring for over 2 years. Most of the time I ride my gravelbike on really flat terrain in a good mix of on and off road and for that type of use I'm using a 11-32 SRAM cassette. I found out that Shimano created GRX 1X purely for 11-40 and 11-42 cassettes and only then it all works better than almost anything else. With the 11-32 SRAM cassette this is quite different, shifting is not how it should and can be. I replaced the standard derailleur cage for a Garbaruk cage with the Garbaruk pulleys and that was the best thing I could have done. Now the whole set up not only shifts perfect with the 11-40 and 11-42 cassettes as Shimano likes you to use, also with a 11-32 SRAM cassette everything is way better than it was and also with a 11-46 cassette all's fine. Didn't try a bigger cog but I'm convinced it will work as it works with the cassettes with smaller cogs. Very happy with my purchase as my bike shifts better than it ever has done with the by Shimano not advised cassettes.

I am a fan of garbaruk, but after chewing through a 34t oval chainring in 3 months and another buddy chewing through their cassette in 6months, I am reluctant to give them another try. I am hoping that the extra teeth on their Gravel/road chainrings will help with durability. But if you’re a powerful rider or rides in harsh conditions, keep an eye on the component wear. In terms of function, they are A1. Chainrings run dead quiet and the long teeth allowed me to remove my chain guide and between the ring and chainguide weight savings it was an easy 100g Vs previous setup. They also clear mud very well. Hopefully the 40t ring will last longer. Fingers crossed, they look amazing on most bikes!

I wore through the first cassette fairly quickly but I rode it a lot in gross winter conditions so I'm not sure whether it's worse on balance than a Shimano or SRAM alternative. I'm using it with a wax chain now so that should see it all last much longer.

I have the steel bearing ones they have been going for 15,000 ish dirty Cornish road miles, top one has only just started to feel like it needs a clean spins freely tho bottom one still doing its job and looking good while it does it. You can fit them in a normal shimano cage too, just file off the little tab, Its a narrow wide jockey wheel it holds the chain no probs. I think the only negative I can think of is that going from standard resin to alloy wheels theres a very slight sound increase which is generic and so slight its splitting hairs for the sake of it.

I went with garbaruk but with a sram force 11spd rear mech, the extended cage and garbaruk 50t 11spd cassette and unfortunately it didn't work well. Weather the cage was bent or cassette was defective I just could not workout why the gears were off, shifting was fine but it was like I didn't have enough cable tension and too much cable tension at the same time, the chain alignment was off opposite ways each end of the cassette (if that makes any sense) Anyway I ended up swapping out to 52t sram eagle and used the ratio 12 spd shifter upgrade kit and magic it works perfect and could adjust cable tension just like normal. This was unfortunate because the garbaruk cassette was an amazing piece of kit and looked unreal, also was lightweight, im sure the problem with old setup was the fact I was using a road derailleur and it couldn't handle the long cage and large cassette.

The XO1 setup w/ a spending eThirteen Helix 9-46 cassette and SRAM 12sp chain is probably the most silky smooth shift experience I have had. The other one isn't quite as amazing, but its with a Sunrace 11-46. I do have a question though since it's on topic w/ the video. I am getting ready to do a new gravel bike build, and picked up Shimano GRX 810 (1x11), and I am considering do the Gabaruk conversion on this bike as well. With the Gabaruk cage, does it allow you to run 2X? I couldn't find much information on what happens when you change the rear derailleur cage. I can say definitively that it does not work with a 50/34 and 10-50 cassette. If you have enough links to get you chain to 50-50, it will be too long for anything for the bottom 6 gears with the 34T. However if you're using something like a 42/30 or 42/28 and 10-50, it works. I wanted to try it with a more traditional 46/30 w/ 11-50, but by that time my chainrings were already changed.

Will this work with GRX 2x ? I am looking for something like a 30t front ring and 46t back for really steep off-road climbs And if so, which GRX detail er should it go with? Thanks

Nah no way it'll work with 2x. The cage couldn't gather up the colossal amount of slack chain you'd have.

Mate this garbaruk cassette works with shimano grx wheels ?

  • @marcuswong1797

You are running di2. A cheaper method would just easily switch the derailleur to XT di2 and then grab a 11-46 or even 11-51 (using a wolftooth) shimano cassette. You will need a new chain. The Also if you are using mechanical set up the standard GRX 812 derailleur with a wolftooth can easily clear a 11-46 cassette. So this way you will save hundreds of more dollars. Garbaruk set up cost a lot more, but you will get the bling and the super lightweight cassette.

how has the Garbaruk held up? considering one over an Eagle 10-52 for my gravel bike ....

It's held up according to expectations. I've just switched to a fresh cassette and chainring, directly replacing like-for-like the ones in this video because this bike became a bad weather warrior and I chewed everything up.

The smart move is to buy GRX 2X, and slap a 11/40 XT cassette on. 1X sucks, it doesnt work for gravel. But its incredibly hip and ever so cool.

I’m assuming you can’t just use a Shimano 46T and perhaps SRAM rear cassette and a Wolftooth gear spacer.

You could with a freehub body change, but it wouldn't look anywhere near as pimp.

Also wouldn't run as well because the wolftooth road link just moves the guide pulley further from the cassette. They are generally a last resort for me especially when the replacement cage is under $100.

Any long term feedback on the durability of the Garbaruk gear? I’m specifically interested in the chainring since it’s the only oval that I’ve found that is listed as compatible with Shimano HG+. I’m wanting to run GRX cranks, 10-45 SLX or XT cassette, XTR chain and a GX AXS derailleur. I might be better off with Sram cassettes and XO1 chains but Shimano has much better gearing options for their cassettes.

I've been running one of them on my MTB both with an XTR 12s chain and also a XX1 chain. Both work great. I think the gravel/road rings will be no different.

I've been using a Garbaruk chainring on a GRX crankset for over two years now (3000 kilometers) and although some of the color on the teeth has disappeared it still works like it's new.

Seems a bit expensive. It wouldn’t be quite as bling but why not just put an XT rear mech with an 11-46 cassette?

  • @JustRideAdelaide

Because that's a far more expensive solution 😂 All you need for the Garbaruk upgrade is the cage and cassette rather than a whole new derailleur and cassette

Also tragically that doesn't work because the amount of cable travel per shift is different between road and mtb on both shimano and sram on 11 and 12 speed (though not 10 speed and older). There is a whole segment of products designed to address this exact issue of needing sub 18 gear inches for very mountainous terrain when bikepacking (and other wide range cases like in the video). Its a very real problem neither sram or shimano have an adequate solution for sadly except things like AXS which I am very wary of for a variety of reasons. This is just one way to get that sweet do it all setup where you can load the bike up and go over a rocky mountain pass and still get some decent speed on the road.

I had problems with garbaruk 10-46 cassette-xtr di2. Shifting was much better with xtr cassette

  • @loft4me

I agree. To retain the buttery smooth shifting of my xtr, I opted not to swap out my cassette, but instead delete my 17 tooth cog, and add just a single low gear cog from Kore. I retain the Shimano interface between cassette and derailleur, but increase my low end by six teeth
