I can see the benefits of 1x for off road, but for a road bike 2x is the only one I want.

They messed up by using the 17t difference on the 48/31 and the fact that the chain line is so big. It sucks.

Let's take a look at the "disadvantages" of 2x: Once I setup my front derailleur, I rarely have to play with it so that's not an issue. More to break? In theory, but I've done XC races in the mud and even if the whole rear cassette is caked in mud, the rear derailleur stops shifting, the front derailleur still works. I view 2x as also a redundancy measure, not a point of failure. Tire width? Mountain bikes have had 2x and 3x before... how wide do you need your gravel tires to be? Simply build bikes with longer chain stays (Ritchey Outback for example). The obsession with short chainstays is a bit odd given the need for stability on rough terrain.

@@C.Medina No, I'm strictly mechanical and always will be. The last front derailleur I broke was back in the late 90's. Perhaps it's just a matter of riding style and types of rides you do. Some people break stuff all the time no matter what the technology. Some do not.

Great review thank you. I currently run 3x on my hardtail gravel bike. I am older and less experienced than most. 62 and 1,000 miles last year. Had not been on a bike for around 40+ years. Cadence feels important to me so I feel the transition to 2x would be easier than 1x. I also have read that the Specialized Diverge with the GRX 810 group set can accommodate up to 47 MM x 700 C. That should be enough tire for my style of riding in Central WI. Long low grades on smooth gravel and a little bit of single track. I can still put on the 2.1” Schwalbe Rocket Ron’s on the MB for winter fun.

Why choose? Get two bikes. One with 1x the other 2x. Problem solved.👍🚴🚴🚴

Thats what i got,a 2x ultegra on my road bike and have converted my trek 7.3fx hybrid to dropbars and old 3x8 gearing to 1x10,,42t chainring and 11/36 cassette,way easier,and prefer it to my road bike set up

I got a MTB with a 1x10 speed Deore. Almost 3 years now with it, I bought a Merida Silex 400 gravel bike with a 2x Shimano GRX group set. It feels good having my cycling life a level up. 🤘🚴

I’d imagine either would be fine! A lot would depend on how the bike is being used, some Gravel bikes do seem to be used as XC MTB at which point big tyres and 1x makes sense! For myself I have a decent trail MTB that is a lovely bike and well is great off road, plus a Gravel bike that I mix up road, and trails for that 2x feels a better fit, especially at 10speed once 12 or 13 can’t really see why you wouldn’t go 1x. Same goes for tyres I run fairly thin and quick rolling gravel tyres, if the bike can’t handle the terrain it’s probably a hint that I should be using the MTB! Don’t get me wrong sometimes it’s just fun to push the limits!

Makes great sense what you was saying , and I wish I could have a use for any of theses bikes. I think they look great . But the truth is - there’s nowhere to ride these sort of bikes where I live . High peak Derbyshire is either road or mountain bike , the few gravel trails are now to busy with dogs and walkers .

Less spendy option of two bikes; DI2 2x GRX, 2 set of wheels (700c / 650b) to sort the tyres clearance! Also I agree the Di2 front mech / gear changing is truly amazing when covered in the UK mud.

Excellent review, David. Thank you. I have a 2X11, 48/31 - 11/34 Shimano GRX drivetrain on my gravel bike and I love it. And, I have a 1X12, 32 X 10 - 51 Shimano XT drivetrain on my hardtail mountain bike and I love it, too. With gravel riding it seems that cadence is a really important factor. Similar to road riding. You can see the terrain changing and you have time to consider your exact gearing requirements to you achieve your desired cadence for the upcoming climb or descent. Conversely, with mountain biking it seems there are always lots of immediate decisions to be made .... body position, line choice and selecting the right gear. A simple drivetrain with a good range of options immediately available is paramount. This is where the 1X shines. And the precision and certainly when picking gears fast is a real Shimano strength. I'm really happy Shimano has made these two drive trains available. They both work great for me.

A good review David, thank you. I have a Trek Checkpoint SL6 with aGRX derailleur on a 34-11 cassette and a standard road Ultegra 50/34 chain ring which I find gearing is fine for the road as well as two Yorkshire cyclocross races. Admittedly the chainring was full of mud as well as derailleur but everything worked. Seems you can run pretty much anything you want as long as it’s well maintained?

The tire clearance is only influenced by the FD with short chain stays (esp. with narrow roadie Q-factors). Smarter geometries offer much more options. E.g. I choose my wheelsets depending on the terrain from 700c x 32mm up to 700c x 50mm in the rear, even 2.25 in the front. Ultegra drivetrain, 2x11, 46/30 in the front (absoluteBlack chainrings), in the rear 12-26, 11-32 or even 11-42 ( w/ 1.85m spacer). Mega range for variyng terrain, steep ascents and cargo. Different lengths of chains, of course, but everything with the same standard Ultegra2x crankset & RX rear derailleur. Without problems. My son rides a similar set-up (50/34in front) but it is his frame with shorter chainstays that limits the rear tire to 700c x 47. It's the tire height colliding with seat stay bridge and yoke. He still can go wider, though. So on his 650b wheels he runs 48 to 50mm and still has clearance, maybe even @ReneHerse Umtanum Ridges, 650b x 55🤩

Not trying to be rude, but look at how you spelled definitely. Does “defiantly” translate to definitely when you sound it out?

I feel the Ultegra has some ground to conquer here. Namely a 1x Ultegra with 12 gears, really should be able to setup a casette that works for you need. You get the ultralight Ultegra, made even lighter by ditching a front chainring, for the lowest possible weight. Has to be a build. Alternatively, SRAM has the Eagle series, that also delivers 12 gears. It comes in 3 versions. As you step up in Shimano quality, you get an extra gear. 9-10-11-12 from Sora through Tiagra, to 105 and then Ultegra. But the 3 different quality Eagle gears will all support you with 12 gears. The intro gear made of steel and plastic, the step up aluminum and carbon, and the premium then further refined. Point being, you can make a 1x 12 gear bike with any of these gears to match your desired pricepoint.

I have four 1x bikes. The youngest is from 1974. As the guy says, gearing range restrictions is a disadvantage. This, would you believe, is why the double chainset was invented.

It's a great groupset, the lever can be a little too light, I found I was overshifting sometimes, that was with big gloves on with little feel though.

Less than 14 is easy? Depends on load and topography. If you in the mountains with kit for a real trip then 14 is a landspeed record bro. If on the other hand your idea of gravel is smooth and flowy on pea sized gravel well then I get it.

Can you fit larger chain rings on the 2x set up at the front?

I wonder if the next innovation will be 'none-by'🙂 Look forward to that along with telepathic gears. Got 2x on my gravel bike but defo will be ditching the front mech for a 1x system. I have way too many unused gears and I do like the look of 1x.

Pretty sure in time we will have a gearbox in the cranks and something like a belt drive to the rear. More gears and far less maintenance.

Gears used in gravel bikes are predicted for King Kong or E-bikes. I had to change cassete from 11/42t to 11/51t that allows me to ride uphil. (40T front)

I think imma gonna go with the single chainring but have a 30 in still, which i'll shift by hand on long, steep climbs. No front derailleur... I think i'll run two chainlocks to adjust chain lenght. This way you have the rough terrain safety from the high teeth and also blablabla... I think its a great idea for a world trip. Mucho gears with less stuff to fix for low budged. You welcome ;P

Hi does it need a special cassette? I want to buy just the crank to begin will it be possible?

Has anyone tried to convert a 2x from Shimano GRX RX810 to the Shimano GRX RX812 to be able to move from 11x34 to an 11x40 or 11x42T? I have a gravel bike I'm considering doing so. Would love some experienced

lets face it Shimano is bullit-proof no matter 1x or 2x and GRX is no exception. the tire clearance for 2x also depends on your frame geometry - most gravel bikes take wider tired regardless of 2x - my GRX 800 setup on my bike can take up to 700x47 or 650x53 - that enough to handle some pretty chunky tires !

So it's not a problem to mount a dropper post on Shimano front lever, assuming it's not operating a front derailleur? ^^

I love my GRX Di2 1x. For left and right levers operating the rear mech.. in terms of gear range, the best 1x is SRAM mullet 12 speed. 10-50, with 36 or 38 chainring

11-40 cassette works with the 2x rear mech. I have it on my grx810 Warbird. All the low for hills and all the high for downhill. I personally dislike 1x as my bike goes on road to get to the gravel. I need that larger chainring.

@@C.Medina I'm a medically retired paratrooper, so knees and back are past their prime. Maybe check your fit.

I've a SRAM 1X 12 speed on my MTB and I find myself running out of gears on the faster sections or if using it on the road quiet a lot. It's fantastic for simplicity but there are limitations mainly when speeds are higher. I don't find the steps as big an issue as you quickly adjust the cadence to the ideal one after a change. I agree that the riding type should drive the decision, 1X for more off-road & technical and 2X if you want a multipurpose bike than can do it all and with more comfortable road gearing.

Indeed a true do-it-all bike would be ready for any configuration (loaded or not, slick or knobby tires) and terrain. The answer would then be 2x or 3x.

Agree. I also have 1x12 on my MTB and top gear is a bit low but I'd rather have a low gear for steep climbs.

Its because of your cassette and chainring, not because of SRAM 1x. I run 40t with a 9-50 cassette, all the range I ever need.

I'd imagine you're using a 28 ot 30t chainring on your mountain bike though? Swap that for a 40t and you'd not run out of pace on the roads and descents, which is what SRAM's mullet setup is all about

Nothing in there made me think 1x is superior to a 2x. Sure you keep saying the 1x might be lighter and it's definitely simpler because there's only one instead of two, but I have literally been riding bikes with two derailers since I was 12 years old and I am 55 now and I am well aware that two derailers is not a burden. And now I'm looking around for a carbon fiber 2X GRX 600 and I'm having a hard time finding one I want. Most just offer the 1X with 650b. I want 2x with 700c.

2x for me, i wonder if there any 44,28 chainring ? And for the cassette 10speed is enough for me, with 11-36 cassette

Have you experimented with a bigger cassette on the 2X? Good thing with older drivetrains you can still do some pretty good mix n matching. I have a nine 9 speed shimano xt rear derailleur running a 11 - 42 10 speed cassette with shimano 105 10 speed shifters. Match with FSA 48 - 32 cranks. I believe my setup exceeds the gear range you can get from the 2X setup. Can you not use the 1X derailleur on the 2X setup to accommodate the bigger cassette?

If 1x i would choose sram, i would use 42t and 9-42t. That would have everything i need, climbing and flats.

I have Shimano GRX Di2 2by system. If I buy for 1by new cassete, rear derailleur and crankarm can I convert to 1by. Can my GRX 2by shifters be used for 1by? Do I need anything else?

Can you do a review on microshift advent x with road brifters? Its would be interesting for a pro bike and gear reviewer to give his taughts. All existing reviews are by alternative cycling channels.

I'd love a GRX groupset if I could actually buy one! UK customers can't get any from most EU shops and supplies are low generally...

It's not only difficult for UK customers, unfortunately. Supplies (groupsets, cassettes etc.) are also low voor EU customers.

The tyre clearance issue with 2x isn't correct, plenty of gravel bikes come stock with 45s with GRX 2x

i run a 2x system 46/30 with a 11-40t. works a treat

love 1X. If paired correctly with a huge range of gears where lower gears are just like lower gears on a 2X-3X bike, and the easier gears can potentially be huge, up to 52T, but that's just me dreaming. There are XC bikes like that but the chainring is like 30T in most cases, so the speed is very low on tarmac.

what's the point for having a drop post function

Less weight taking the front mech away then add more with a dropper seat post plus no loss of the extra cable or maintenance seems like marketing hype to me 👍

To go 1x on my road bike I would like a 44t chainring paired with a 10-48t cassette in a unified mechanical groupset....Sram? Shimano?....one day maybe...

David you’re the first rider I’ve heard say that 42mm tire is the limit for grx 810 2x. Can you give me some more info as I’m about to build a grx di2 2x diverge and was planning on running maxxis rambler 45s. Shimano makes no mention of this is their literature. Please help!

This, I’d consider for both gravel and time trial

if it's mainly gravel without hills 1x is the best as the chain is very stiff. i like that especially on tough underground. as i hate cycling on roads mainly because of stupid car drivers 1x is perfect for me. for sure if you're racing on roads too you need 2x. i have 42x42 this is a good mix of being fast enough and getting up normal hills. if it gets steep it is hike-a-bike for me. ;)

Good info. I have 2 bikes. A very road biased gravel bike with 2x11&11-34 105. And a xc mtb with 1x11&11-51 Deore and dropper. It just makes sense. I am not a fan of the super wide tire 1x gravel bike. It’s kind of a compromise that’s not good at offering Road or MTB experience. But that middle ground does offer something in the middle that is not as fun or exciting but perhaps practical for some people.

I would certainly like to buy one this year but with the wait time it's looking 2022.lol

Just get a 2x if you are not sure. 1x is fantastic in mtb as you don't tend to pedal into higher speeds. With that style of riding. The whole advantage of 'gravel' is you can hit higher speeds on the road whilst enjoying more capability off road. Spinning out can get a little irritating to n 1x and with 2x you usually always have the gears. As for clearance, I just purchased a gravel that will take 50mm tyres on a 2x grx setup. It works well and is just a different requirement to my my 1x MTBs.

I have the 1x. Overall I love it but Shimano needs to produce some quality light weight cassettes with wider range. Switching to an XD driver and an e13 Helix 9-46 to address this.

I really like it, the 10-42 cassette works a treat. While you can still buy it, it's nowhere near as popular with bike brands as it was three years ago and it's a pity SRAM has given it an upgrade, seems like they're putting all the eggs in the eTap basket

@@davidarthur Yeah I really like it too. It's on my Grail AL I bought last year. Gear range, ergonomics, shifting- all great. My only negative is the braking or at least the lever feel when braking, which for me isn't as good as Shimano's hdrauluc systems..

What's a Gravel Bike? Is it a mtb with Rd bike parts?

I find it infuriating that they don't make the 2x to work with the 11-42 cassette. Be perfect for all sorts or riding and it would dominate the touring market

Agreed. I got a Kona Sutra with a 46/30 & 11-36 cassette. Want to convert it to 11-40 or maybe 11-42 if possible. Researching ways to do it.

you could only run narrow wide chainring on 1x, because you wouldn't be able to shift of it. so no, the 2x crank is not narrow wide

I don't think the range of the 11-42 cassette is bad, it's actually more than the 2x on my old CX bike with 11-28 and 46/34 chainrings (swapped out the 36t). And at 11 speed any more range and the gaps would become too noticeable. I'm happy with GRX 1x on my gravel bike, which I use on the road with 32c tires and mudguards in winter, but I'd say go for 2x if you want to use it for faster summer road riding.

I hate 1x when at the upper and lower limits. Its like cross-chaining

On the tarmac, 2x is essential

Top speed is different. Limited by front chainring for sure. If you ride lots of hilly gravel, you might be better off with a 2x.

No mention of 11-46 in this one? But went the opposite direction and opted to go for a 40t instead of the maximum 42t in the 1x setup which makes it look even worse ? Shimano could clean up if they offered a 12 speed 10-50 GRX option as their lever actuation is so much better than the competition, but they are in last place when it comes to 1x range. What a wasted opportunity.

You can't officially use an 11-46t cassette with Shimano GRX, but that's what I alluded to with the 'hack' that some people have found works well. As stated in the video I wanted to focus on the stock groupsets, I'll look at those hacks in a future video. As for the exact ratio of these gears, it's all I had available I'm afraid. Still, the 42t doesn't solve the fundamental issue that Shimano 1x is lacking ambition and range compared to rivals imo. I'd love see some of the XTR tech come to GRX, that would be sweet

Shimano messed up by limiting this crank sadly I do not like it. They really have shot themselves in the foot by limiting this system. Sad that they have limited themselves. Disappointed.

I'll go for 2x, 2x you can shift the chain ring, while the 1x you cannot shift, the 2x is better than the 1x, infact the 1x should calling a fixie bike, because the crank is fix in 1 chain ring, look its no shifting on th chain ring, the 2x is faster than the 1x.

1X is the perfect set up,,doesnt have the low/low gear.................doesnt have the high/high gear.............what more could you ask for?...............people selling 1X will tell you you dont need the real low gear or higher high gear.

Why do people keep making these 1x vs 2x videos. 1x sucks. 1x is for bike paths only. Gravel bikes are supposed to be 'go anywhere bikes'. That usually involves a large amount of pavement. Which means you need a 50 up front. Why anyone would give up properly spaced intermediate gear shits AND high/low range is beyond me...
