    Cool cassette mut why not use a NX 11v 11-50 cassette? It would shift ok right? i mean the chain is still a SRAM chain. I understand you got the components from Garbaruk but from a cost perspective it is more interesting to use a SRAM NX cassette.

    Great show. I follow this with some interest since before GRX, the option for brifters with mtb gear range was mainly with SRAM. There is another option though, which is a MTB shifter routed thru a thinner road bar (often a fixie handlebar) running a XT RD. Brake levers would be some road style ones like Tektro RL340/520. I have run this setup on a couple of mini velos. It gives indexed shifting and functions like bar end shifters with the advantage of not being bar ends and easier to reach for.

My sister recently went bike touring in Japan, and we fit a mix of old Apex, new Apex and SunRace to give her a huge 2x range with some parts designed for 1x. It wasn't the prettiest, but it got her up the side of many Japanese mountains with all her paniers! Keep having bad ideas, Russ!

    Very nice!! I looked at the Garbaruk 11-50 for my setup and their stuff looked beautiful. I almost pulled the trigger, but the cassettes were $280 + the derailleur cage when I was looking. (Now you can get the cassette and cage for $257. The pulleys are $69.) Plus I was on the fence about having a modified rear derailleur. I went the XD route with the 9-46 so I could use a standard GRX derailleur. But by the time you factor in the cost of the XD driver, e13 cassette and a chainring, it was close to $400 so I spent more than the Garbaruk would cost.

  • @ohiomoto

    @ohiomoto

    4 жыл бұрын

    Also, the long cage SRAM Rival and GRX derailleurs will go to 46t without modifications so the e13 9-46 might be a viable/desirable option for some. Especially if they already have an XD driver.

    Because of advancing age, I recently converted two bikes to straight bars instead of drops. For old Shimano 9 speed this is a piece of cake - everything is interchangeable, shifters and derailleurs, road and mountain. For ten and eleven speeds be prepared to do some homework. Pull ratios differ between road and mountain, SRAM and Shimano.

    Nice! Thank you so much for this video, you showed exactly what I was looking for. I've got a Sram Force 1x11 setup, and the bike came with 11-36 cassette and 42 tooth chainring. It does have the long cage derailleur, which Sram claims can handle 42 tooth cassette pretty easily. Do you know if the stock Force 1 derailleur can handle more than 42 teeth? I doubt I will need a 50 tooth, but a 46 tooth might be good, trying to figure out if I need this replacement cage to get an 11-46 on my bike. I don't think it matters, but the bike is an Orbea Terra gravel bike.

    Rival 1 and Force 1 RDs both can cover 10-46t no problem in terms of chain wrap capacity and clearance. *Maybe* 10-48t, but that's pushing it. Only way to get it 10-50t is to either install the Garbaruk cage as in the video, or replace the cage assembly with an Eagle one. You technically only need to do the cage, but then the chain lock might rest in a funky place, so if you replace clutch and cage it all lines up fine.

    Hey Russ. Great content! I just ordered the goods from Garbaruk and was curious what your experience was regarding shipping time? Trying to time all the other parts of the puzzle to coincide. Also give a shout if you come to Asheville, NC. There's tons of supple life to be had! I'll show you some killer rides and buy you a beer.

    Dude nice video. I think I am going to do this. I already have an 11-46 cassette and my Force 1 derailleur is barely hacking it. I can optimize shifting and keep this cassette or go to an 11-52 if I want and that'll be plenty.

    I got the KCNC Eagle replacement cage and the Sunshine 11-52 cassette and everything works well. Pretty surprised. I thought it might inherently shift poorly because of the giant scale but it works perfectly. I have no reason to try anything different like a cassette with a 9 cog. I went with a 42t chainring and am pretty happy with it. The replacement cage didn't go on seamlessly, but I figured it out.

    I bought the Garbaruk cassette with the longer cage and jockey wheels. I can get the cassette to work well with a standard Rival long cage derailleur but I cannot get enough chain length to cover the longer cage and jockey wheels though! Not really close. Just wondering what chain you used please? Perhaps it only works with a smaller frame? Thanks.

    It may not give you as much range as this, but there's also the Wolftooth RoadLink as well (they have something called a GoatLink for similar applications but different systems). it's only a $20 part (+shipping) or something like that.
