I did 1 year military service in France in 1980.i had to learn encryptions in radio transmission for 4 months. After that, i was posted at St Malot, at the 9th marine infantry division Head quarter. From our room we had view on the sea shore. Every morning we had 1/2, very fresh, Baguette with french butter, jam and cheese. After , we did jogging around the walls of the old city. I did few days on the field with french rations. The ration box was a lot smallers, no hot food or burner. Only cans food as corned beef, but with a little bottle of Brandy and cigarettes...everything that is forbidden today. The Brandy was so good during these cold nights. After all these years , i remember these days as very nice days.

I can't imagine why you ate the gizzard and quinoa salad hot. LOL. You even read it out loud early in the episode and I thought, "Oh, finally, he knows not to heat up the cold salad this time." LOL. Oh, well, keep up the good work. Missing your sis.

When I was deployed to Somalia in 1992 we worked with the French Foreign Legion and traded MRE’s for the French rations all the time. Usually we had to fork over at least 2 MRE’s in trade since the French ration was an all day ration and the MRE is a single meal. I liked them , but the French said they like ours better. Honestly I think it was just that both sides we were tired of eating the same thing all the time. The French liked our candies and crackers the most (I should mention that most of the “French” were actually Brits in the Legion).

Wouldn't be that way today. As I understand it The Foreign Legion is essentially glorified prison, and they don't take serious convicts anymore.

@@PanarchyTheater Wtf are you vomiting, foreign legion is a piggy bank for people from poorer countries more than anything and French people who want to have an exiting life, people who did jail time, use alcohol or the rest can't join at all as they won't pass the entry tests anyway, out of 100 people coming in they will take at maximum 20

Great video guys! I ordered a French and one other MRE's from MREmountain a few months ago after seeing them on your channel. It took six weeks to get to Australia but it was so worth it. I loved the biscuits and the mains. Is great to hear Phil. I hope Amanda is doing well.

Nathan, always remember to open the box for the esbit stove when you examine a French ration because the French always tuck at least one more item into the box in addition to the stove and fuel.

Actually the FFL use immersion heaters to heat those up anyway -- which was fun when the labels used to be paper. (pretty sure that is why they are printed cans now) They don't hand out the meals as a box that much either, you get your main stuck on your "tray" and then help yourself to all the loose stuff that is in a box beside the line. That is where you grab the tuna and cheese. And everyone grabs a pack of the crackers, as well as a loaf of "field bread." (they used to be more like the Russian rats for crackers) This was in 1991, but the meals are pretty much the same today. Their field kitchen has tubes for baking simple baguettes. Add a liter of water and you are done. (hot water was obviously available too)

Always trying to trade for the fruit and fish with the Mediterranean countries something we lack but with all the politically correct rations in our country it is getting harder to trade. But they still want the chocolate and hot cocoa. We used to have boxes like these with everything but the main but now we are getting those freeze-dried meals and need to take vitamin and mineral drinks for nutritional value. I long back to the late eighties rations.

They are also known for making real black coffee. Café au lait is for the evening so old farts like us can sleep after drinking it. The French rations are great but there is always too little in it. We always try to trade for their fruit and fish which was easier with our old box rations they were bigger and higher quality.

With all the filthy lucre KZread is paying you for posting these videos (*COUGH*) you could stump up and buy a portable electric hotplate or a butane gas-fueled one you can get at camping stores. The European armies eat just so much better than their Aussie, American, and Brit counterparts. Not a big fan of mango or banana anything in this ration, though.
