MR2 Spyder gets Coilovers

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Toyota MR2 Spyder has been running on the original suspension which was very worn out. It is finally time to upgrade to Coilovers.
After a lot of research and hunting I decided to get BC Racing BR Series with Swift Springs. 4 in front and 6 in back which is the lowest spring rates they offer.
Terrific set up!

    Glad to see you back in your Spyder. Don't stress your front brake line when installing struts; support the hub and brake assembly by tying it off to the car. The front looked like it was still adjusted a bit low, but much more aggressive, I think you made a wise ,one with the more compliant springs. Your struts did look original; niot uncommon for the boots to look like ribbons on a Spyder.

    Swift springs are an option when ordering your coil overs as well as the custom spring rates. I got the softest they offer and they have been terrific. Softest setting for daily driving is great and turned up for spirited racing is amazing. My set up was $1,300.

    thanks for sharing, as after gathering many opinions it helped me make my decision to purchase the BC Racing BR Series for my 2001 MR2 Spyder which is presently getting a 2zz engine upgrade. the only real legitimate criticism i've heard thus far about these coil overs is that they are "extremely" stiff/tight. however, many owners seem to be fine with their ride at their least stiff setting, so i hope i'll be fine with them. besides, i didn't get my Spyder to be any kind of luxury car with a soft ride! ;-)

    Great video, how is the ride/harshness with this setup? I have seen people recommend the DS coilovers instead of the BR for a better ride but the BR and a swift springs seems like a great option for a street/non-daily toy car. How does this setup feel long term?

    @@StarkReality Great to know, I currently have Swift lowering springs on my Spyder and while it rides pretty well, the stock shocks don't take bumps well and the car frequently rubs the fenderwell on the stock wheels. The rates are very conservative so the wheels really tuck in when i turn into driveways. And with grippy tires there is a lot of brake dive and body roll. I also hit my bracing quite often over speed bumps. So I'm looking for a smaller drop once I get the coilovers on!

    Great video. I considered these BC coilovers after almost getting Yellowspeed before making my final decision. Eventually went with MeisterR instead of the above and will fit them next week. From what I understand MeisterR's are pretty well set up and ready to install, only needing minor adjustment after fitting... Would these BCs be already basically set up?

    @@euroflipn they're honestly great! They say you shouldn't adjust them, as they're supposed to be about right for the car as they come. That's very wrong. Out of the box the fronts were far too stiff and the rears too soft. The adjustable knob at the top of each strut makes a big difference. I have them set for only a little stiffer than the standard dampers, because of the undulating roads I drive on. Also the car as standard sits a little high, so I dropped it an inch or more. I highly rate them!

  • @StarkReality

    I have never had any noises or knocking. When it comes to suspension and knocking that usually means you have movement at some bolt somewhere.

  • @clarkdef

    @clarkdef

    You can get knocking if the shocks are topping out. This is caused by setting the spring up with the shock fully extended. It's a upper bumpstop within the shock reaching its limit

    Swift springs make all the difference. The generic springs they put on are not consistent and the initial spring rate during compression is actually a few rates higher than what they are specced at, this making it a lot more bouncy

  • @marcd.7664

    @marcd.7664

    A spring is a spring. There is no "initial rate on compression", because the spring is there to hold the weight of the car at a certain hight and nothing more.🤦‍♂️

    So you’re telling me there is no difference between the generic springs that come with bc coilovers vs swift springs? On coilovers, the sprigs do not necessarily determine height. The coilovers do 🤦🏻‍♂️

    Ughhh I'm so stuck between 4k/6k with swift springs or 3k/5k. I had an MRS before and on stock springs with koni yellows and H&R sports it was horrible. Just the most roll you can get and the struts blew. Ive had 3 sets of bcs with swift on 3 cars now but this time i reallly wana be comfortable but still canyon the hell out of it without oversteering to death like on stock suspension. I too have a 2zz with an LSD. I had a camry 2002 @ 10k/14k and it was beating ferraris on angeles forest haha. What do y'all recommend for a soft but still none rolly ride (im also adding full whiteline sway bars front and back so thatll help me not have to go too stiff). I'm a bit worried 4k/6k is too hard (I always keep on the sofest level btw) and 3k/5k might be TOO soft.
