Tipper, thank you for this and all the things that you do to document our heritage. I'm a descendant of the Coleman's and Rose's from Grape Creek and Fain Mountain respectively. My Dad's parents are buried at Grape Creek Baptist. My Mom was born in a cabin in Ranger on Panther Top Road. Ranger was originally called Letitia. My Mom's parents are buried at Ranger Baptist Church. Mom graduated from Hiawasee Dam School. I'm proud of my roots and the sacrifice and hard work by my ancestors which gave me a childhood rich in love and with better opportunities than they were afforded............God Bless!!!

Fascinating interview, Tipper, and Johnny Robertson was very interesting to listen to. Wouldn't mind hearing more stories from him in the future. Loved learning more about Culberson because we almost bought a modern-day house just up the highway about 20 years ago. My husband was a retired postmaster, so we were drawn to that little old Post Office and were sorry its surrounding community no longer existed.

Very enjoyable "Remember when..." visiting around town! !

He was very interesting and very soft spoken.

He seems like such a joy to talk to!!! Love hearing others history and I was born and raised in Fort Smith Arkansas and now live just across the state line in Oklahoma

Thanks for recording Mr. Robertson’s experiences. He’s definitely who my Papaw JB would have called “one of them good ol’ boys” in the best sense of that phrase. I wonder if his story could be put in a time frame, high school graduation, time in Viet Nam, and the 45 years of his business, etc. It would be good to understand his time in relation to that of Ms. Hicks and others from your family. You’re doing something important here.

That was a nice visit. I try all the time to imagine that big double lane, double wide road replaced with just a two lane along with a train depot, hotel, stores and a school up on the hill. Imagine that! Thanks Tipper.

I’ve been through Culberson a few times while traveling to Murphy. It reminds me of a community just across the state line from me called Edwardsville, Alabama named after my 4th great grandfather Josiah Edwards and his father William who came from Chatham County, North Carolina. It was the county seat of Cleburne County until 1906 then it was moved to Heflin. After that it died off and now just a community. Great job, I love the stories from the elders even if it’s not in my area. I feel like we keep these places and people alive by telling stories from the past.

It is so cool to.hear about villages that used to be towns. My area in south-central/eastern Iowa has many of those. After church, we drove by the "town" of Newbern. It had an old church, one small, old brick bldg that now had a garage door and about 4 or 5 house clustered around them. It was so sad as it used to be a prosperous coal town like some others close by we plan to go to.

Johnny is an example of God in his life working! When bad things in life came against him he just kept his eyes focused ahead,God worked things out! The military,his wife passing,his children, now a wife beside him. And worked,built good life,survived,now retired. God bless him!! It would be a plus and blessing to stay where you're planted! I think! You know people, they know you, extended family.

I guess it was the late 60's or early 70's. my dad bought a 57 chevy that had been confiscated from one of the drag races. If I remember correctly it was from one of the culberson races. I think I still have a photo of the car packed up somewhere. I"ve been to Johnny's several times and yes, his old shop is a landmark. He is a fine man and I enjoyed his story.

😊 He never raced, just watched the others

I met a guy in Marmet, WV that claimed to be an IndyCar driver back when it was basically a high-powered soapbox derby car. A couple days later he signed me a black and white photo of him sliding upside down on the track...with no roll cage. His scalp was peeled back due to only having leather "helmets." According to him, he has been presumed to be dead from that crash and his SS# was even retired. I asked his son when he wasn't around if he was crazy or telling the truth. He vouched for him 100%. I wish I could find the picture or even remember his name but I can't now. He made me promise to never tell he was alive though. I'm sure he's gone now since he was 90 or so 10 years ago.
