This was a huge step forward over the first generation. I rode in one (a 2004 model, the last year of this generation) and it was pretty basic, but the cloth seats were comfortable and it was easy to get in and out of. It had plenty of power (240HP as an upgrade from the 1999-2001 and a five speed automatic transmission replacing the 4 speed) and the ride wasn't harsh. The cloth seats age better than the leather seats though, just a tip for those who still might be interested in buying. And watch out for the 2nd and 3rd gears of the transmission...they like to go out.

I have yet to see a 2nd gen with a navigation system. Most are getting phased out you don’t see them on the road as much as you used to like how you did back in the 2000’s.

From 2004-2018, my family had a 2004 EX-L, it had what came standard on the EX-L trim. Ours did not have the dvd player, nor did have the navigation system, those were options. You were able to get a sport package on EX/EXL trims which added fog lights and roof rack cross bars. I kept the brochure that my parents had, I wish I kept the window sticker. On the LX a convenience package gave buyers a roof rack and cd player I think. I miss that van.

Contrary to what John said at the beginning of his narration, this Honda Odyssey was not built in Ohio, but in Ontario Canada and later Alabama. This and the 3rd generation are my personal FAV Odysseys.

Minivans have to be one of the most used and abused car classes around. Its crazy to watch this and realize its only a matter of time until we dont see these anymore. It feels like just yesterday when these were everywhere you looked. At least you still see these here or there. Lots of the competition from the early 2000s timeframe are long gone. The only ones i ever see anymore are, the sienna, the occasional caravan, astrovan, and venture. I cant remember the last time i saw any Windstars, Aerostars, or Quests. Heck, i feel like i havent seen the mazda mpv for the longest and their production stopped in 2005 when they switched to the Mazda 5 name. Time truly shows what cars last. I bet we will see a lot more modern day Mazdas on the road in 20 years, since they bought themselves back from ford completely in 2015. Their newer cars have proven to be a lot more solid and in line with Japanese competition. Imagine if Nissan could make such a comeback from Renault. In a parallel universe maybe.

We still own our 2nd gen 2003 Odyssey with over 227k miles. The only major repair was a rebuilt transmission at 190k miles. Otherwise, this very dependable vehicle has served us well for over 13yrs now. We will be looking for a newer Odyssey to replace ours soon.

I have the 2004 which has 4 wheel disk, and the previous owner had the transmission rebuilt and they added an auxiliary cooler to prolong its life. The later 2nd gen had a somewhat better transmission supposedly? I hope so.

This had literally one of the worst automatic transmissions on the market. They were so proned to fail that Honda had to spend almost a billion dollars after all of the recalls and class action lawsuits

Yet at the same time people can get over 100,000 to 200,000 miles out of them, but yes the transmissions are weak. Especially on early second generation models, with the 4 speed automatic, later second generation with the 5 speed, not at bad, the 2004 we had didn’t really have any transmission issues I can think of.

The 3.5 is not an Accord derived engine. It is a variation of the 3.5 used in the Acura 3.5RL/MDX, the Accord of this generation had a 200hp 3.0 V6. 210hp and it got beat by a 200hp Windstar, which does 0-60 in 8.6 secs. Proof, low end torque makes a big difference, especially in normal driving when loaded. 240 ft/lbs @ 3,000rpm on the Ford 3.8 V6. The transmission in these Odysseys are shit junk, just like they are in the first gen Acura MDX which is why you don't see them on the road no more.

@@alphadiallo7787 What part of it is not an Accord engine don't you understand? Do you understand 3.5 vs 3.0? That's all you need to know. No need to throw around letter codes that don't matter, Accord used a 3.0, the heavyweights used a 3.5.

@@headliner733 Engine codes actually do matter lol. It's still the same engine family using much of the same architecture even if the displacement is different. If it were a completely clean sheet design, Honda would designate it with a different naming convention as they have always done. You may want to look up the definition of the word 'derived.'

@@glanzera IT IS NOT AN ACCORD DERIVED ENGINE. It is an Acura 3.5 RL derived engine. How fkn difficult is that for you know nothing's to understand?

  • @glanzera

@headliner733 you are mistaken, plain and simple. All J Series engines are derived from the original 3.0 liter J30A1 which was first used in the Acura CL in 1996 and then the Accord a year later. This Odyssey J35A is a 3.5 liter version of that engine. The first generation Acura RL used the C35A 3.5 liter which is a completely different engine, it is not at all related to the J series. The RL did not receive the J35 until 2005. Feel free to Google it. It's public information should you wish to inform yourself.
