MotorGuide Xi5 Install With NEMA Gateway To Lowrance [Carolina Skiff Rebuild Part 20]

It took a lot of time, research, and debating if it was worth it for me to finally come to a decision on a trolling motor. A year or two ago my old trolling motor went out. I replaced it with a cheap freshwater hand steer trolling motor. It worked great, but just didn’t do all the things I wanted. With a total boat rebuild and a ton of time and money dumped into this skiff. I didn’t want to settle with my new, but old trolling motor. My biggest issue was bringing myself to spend this kind of money on a trolling motor. I try to be frugal and never blow this kind of money on toys. I went back and forth on if it was really worth it for months. Finally I pushed the button and ordered a new MotorGuide with all the bells and whistles.
I had a tough choice to make between Minn Kota and MotorGuide. Both have gps, which was a must. Minn Kota had auto deploy, but would not connect with my almost new Lowrance depth finder. I really went back and forth with this decision. I have always had Minn Kota trolling motors with good luck. Having auto deploy would be awesome. After reading tons of reviews saying how unreliable Minn Kota’s auto deploy was. Along with I couldn’t connect my Lowrance unit. MotorGuide Xi5 was the winner of the month or two long decision.
Out of all the new additions to this skiff rebuild. This is the one thing I am most excited about! For years I have been looking and dreaming about these new technologically advanced trolling motors. Finally I have one mounted on my freshly rebuilt skiff! To say I am excited to splash this thing is an understatement! Thank you to everyone following the Skiff Build Series!

Well done sir. I connect with your video. I upgraded from an Elite 7 HDI to a Gen 3 and I finally upgraded from a MK All Terrain to an XI5 w/GPS & sonar. Installed all the units today. Tomorrow all the wiring. Very excited!
The point of NMEA is a standard broadcast style network(similar to RS485 OR CANBUS). One device can put information on the network and any other device(s) (maybe not even invented yet) can use the information. This comes with some needed standards of resistance on the line to keep out noise and other gremlins, which is why they need terminators and a seemingly over complex design. IP networks that would use RJ45 use addressable devices and typically do peer to peer communications which limits the flexibility and requires more equipment and voltage :)

You and me both! Thank you for keeping up with the videos!
Black RTV works well instead of causing. Cheap and not hard to remove.
if you haven't calked the grommets already leave as is accept a small amount water and you've solved your quick releases cable disconnect issue. pop out the grommets when you need to remove the xi5
Great video, looking forward to seeing it on the water soon! What is it you fish for? I am eager to do a 14ft skiff build myself. Cheers.

Thank you! I can’t wait to splash it. I do a lot of crappie and catfishing. I have high hopes to get it to the beach quite a bit as well. Thank you for watching!
Lets see it in the water! Also if you had to take a guess subtract all the electronics. How much do you think it cost you to do all these repairs and modifications. I have an 18’ skiff by the way. Pretty cool how you brought it back to life and its ready to get on the water again🤘

I tried to keep track of everything I spent. I lost count at some point. Hardware and the trolling motor were more than the rebuild. Rebuild was around 2 grand. I did use a lot of materials in the console. Thanks for watching!
Would appreciate a break down on the overall cost of the build. I have a 14ft with soft floors and a bad transom. I haven’t had the guts to start on it yet cause of cost.

I had full intentions of breaking down every cost and amount of material used. In the mad dash to get it done that got thrown out the window. I have around 5 gallons of epoxy and 20 yards of 30” of 17oz glass in the deck. Probably 2 gallons and 5 yards in the transom. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching!
Hey I’m unclear on a few things and have been trying to troubleshoot. Maybe you could help me?! Are you connecting the 6 prong (blue) on the motor to your Lowrance 8 pin (black) Or does the NMEA eliminate the need for this connection?

you need the Pinpoint gateway that connects to motor to the NMEA backbone, then you run a NMEA cable (5 pin) to the Lowrance. Lowrance 8M0092085
Can you link it with lowrance elite fs7?
Did you make the lake house trip? Maybe I missed an update..

So far so good. Probably my favorite finishing toy ever. I haven’t used it as much as I would like to. Only issue is my Lowrance loses connection every once in a while. I have to power everything down then comes right back. Not sure why, but not a big issue. Thank you for watching!

@@FishHuntCookTinker Did you run the gateway with an extension or is the gateway connected directly to NMEA backbone? Read somewhere the gateway should have a direct connection and no extensions.
