    My first bike was a Ninja 250. I rode it almost everyday for 2 years before I sold it and bought an R6. The Yamaha is fun, but I honestly wish I still had the Ninja because it was honestly the perfect commuter bike due to it’s weight, comfort, reliability, and rideability . I put it through absolute hell, but I still ended up selling it for a lot more than I bought it for.

    I started on a Rebel 250. Guys who start on bigger bikes will make fun of you, but if you put in the seat time, you'll probably out ride a lot of them when you upgrade, possibly before. If you're just wanting to floss, go ahead and get whatever you want, but I'm not going to be as impressed as you might think by how much you spent or how fast your bike is if you can't ride worth a shit. You can draw a crowd of spectators on a little 250 practicing in a parking lot if you ride the shit out of it, and those skills translate quite naturally to bigger bikes. I gave up cruisers because I hate scrubbing pegs on pavement, but starting an a small cruiser was a great decision, and I have no regrets.

    @@notsteve1475 LOL, yeah, I get it. I'm 5'7" and around a buck and a half. The Rebel is too cramped even for me for more than an hour or so. I can totally understand why big guys wouldn't ride one, even to start on, but a 6' 200 lb. guy is going to find it easier to handle a bigger bike than us midgets. We have seat height issues that loom more heavily on our decisions, and bigger often equates to stronger, so the weight of a starter bike could be less of an issue for a bigger guy as well. I was really intimidated by big bikes at first, but after riding the 250 for a while, I put my fears aside and attended a HD demo event. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the weight was not an issue. HDs are low and I found them very easy to manage, but I was tired of grinding the pegs off cruisers. I rode to Daytona in October and started sitting on bikes. I really liked the FJR1300, but it felt really tall and top heavy to me. I didn't have any trouble riding it, but I had to hang off one side to firmly plant one foot. I was torn, but I wanted a little more than the Rebel had to offer, so I pulled the trigger when Kawi offered huge incentives on left over Ninja 650s. I rode it for a year, then revisited the FJR, and it feels completely different now. With the seat in the lower position, I feel really comfortable on it now.

  • @michaellovell2518

    @michaellovell2518

    When I talk about "bigger bikes" in this context, It should certainly be understood to be a relative term. I think it's important to be able to flatfoot your first bike, and the bigger you are, the bigger bike you can flatfoot. I think lighter is probably better for anybody to learn on, but it's less important than being able to plant both feet firmly starting out. I don't think really powerful bikes are a good idea for beginners, but I also understand that a 300 lb. guy on a 250 would be like me riding a 5hp minibike. The size of the rider is definitely a relevant variable!

    I love my ninja 250, was a great beginner bike and ill probably continue using it for the rest of this year or summer at the earliest. I agree with the rpm thing though, highways im sitting at 8-9k rpms. So it is running high, but you also gotta realize that bike can go up to 13k before hitting redline, they are designed based off running high rpms so it will be fine for awhile going those speeds, Id like to upgrade in the future when money isnt an issue but I dont plan on going past a 600cc. Decided to stick with the bikes I currently have but should I change in future I'd happily hop on a NC. I loved that there are lots of places for putting you gear into the bike away from prying eyes. Any recommendations for an old fart getting back into the game after around a 15-year hiatus. Started riding at around 10 and had my motorcycle permit at 15; before I got my car permit. Rode until the ripe old age of around 30. Life took me out of the game for 15 years or so, but I’m at a point where I can get back into it. That said, I’ve been out of it so long l, I don’t know where to begin. Was always a crotch rocket guy, but these days I think I’d like a hybrid. These bikes look pretty good (well, other than the Rebel), but I’m wondering if I’d outgrow them too fast.

    Ian Baker great looking bike and a lot of fun but I worked at a service shop and saw a few of the 390’s and 690’s come in with top end issues. I’m on my 3rd Asian bike and love them because parts are cheaper and easier to install than on euro bikes

    Gaming Badass I am aware of their popularity there but I’m not sure why. I’m not a hater of ktm’s I think they’re awesome (especially the duke 690 that torque will put your eyes in the back of your skull) but euro bikes are too finicky for me me in my opinion same as like a bmw or Audi great machines but could have expensive issues

    I've owned both an RC390 and a Duke 390. They are both fantastic to ride. I can definitely recommend them, just be ready to take it to the shop when you need a valve adjustment because doing it yourself is a pain in the ass. Performance is good, too. Check my channel, I have a video of me tearing it up on my RC390.

    In 2011, I bought two new bikes for myself, as a beginner. The first, a 2003 Suzuki SV650S - a fun v-twin upright sportbike-style standard. I loved it, and still do. It wasn't the most comfortable or the fastest (of course), but it was seriously everything I needed or wanted. And yes, it had no problem meeting my needs as I grew as a rider. The second bike was a 2005 Suzuki Boulevard C50. That Boulevard was flat-out amazing. A full bagger, with a windscreen (yes, many people hate the windscreen, but whatever), a comfortable seat, floorboards, and a reliable design. Once again, I love that bike. Before I moved from SoCal to central Minnesota, I had to sell the bikes. I wish I never had. I miss them. Yeah, it's tougher to ride in Minnesota (and you can't ride for more than a few months), but I still miss the feeling of joy I had when it came time to drive to work or drive back home. I miss the ability to just take off for a few hours and center myself. Anyway, I totally "second" the mention of the SV650. It's an amazing bike for beginners, and quite good for experienced riders.
