One of the greatest hip hop albums ever made, period.
5/5, 10/10, 10.0, *****, A+. Easily one of the best hip-hop albums ever, lyrically and thematically deep, musically adventurous. Outstanding.
Hip hop and mathematics are fucking incredible songs

Do it now is absolutely underrated feature with Busta Rhyme with fantastic chemistry and Speed Law with the best flow and lyrical play
Umi Says is a Soulful Freestyle! (Minus the hook) "I don't wanna take no time to write this down, i wanna tell you how i feel right now."
Myke just called UMI says a pop song is he high
I'm only 22, and I'm from Manchester, England, so albums like these aren't really listened to amongst most of my friends -- or anyone else for that matter. My musical curiosity has led me to discover hip-hop artists and projects from years passed. I've always been a huge hip-hop guy, so I've spent most of my life finding old hidden gems and keeping up with the new stuff. This album is one I found when I used to work as a delivery driver for Domino's Pizza while I was at university, probably 19 or 20, and I used to chill in my car delivering pizzas at night bumping this album. I probably wasn't even talking when it was released, but it still holds a dear place in my heart because of the quality and heart of the record! Love Mos Def man. I remember the first time I heard the opening monalogue on the first track, where he's talking about "hip-hop is going where we going", and it was so insightful at the time I was hooked. Then he comes through with fire for the rest of the album; Speed Law is one of my favourite lyrical tracks ever. Yeah, I love this album so much, gonna get it on vinyl and CD eventually. Don't you just love what music can do.

Black On Both Sides is brought up before Black star in hip hop discussions. Mathematics is also the song most famous internationally. Just compare KZread view counts for the album. I think Black on Both Sides is just such a good album on so many criteria. Rapping(flow, cadence, rhyme schemes), singing, beats, themes, flow of the album, sonic diversity, and both hits and deep cuts.
Umi Says was in the Michael Jordan commercial.

Umi Says was actually on a Jordan Brand commercial
I first saw Mos Def on the Umi Says video. I loved the video. Got the album. I was 15-16 years old when I got it. First listen of Hip Hop. DEAD. LOVE this album.
My absolute favorite album of all time. I discovered this album at random 2004 my freshman year of high school and it reshaped my entire view of hip hop
Mos Def is my favourite MC from his days with Kweli as Black Starliner
I’ve been listening to this album nonstop since it’s been released. And it just happens to be 20 years later yet I still listen to this.
I wish Mos would make one more album with that boombap NYC feel.
I’m 22 years old and this is my favorite rap album of all time. Just a good ass hip hop album that’s easy to vibe to for me personally

i agree with dude. Folks speak highly on many albums, but this album isn't one that folks say to check out.
20 years later...
This is my fav album all time haven't even found an album that was close to this one. Closest things to it for me would be piñata/illmatic/KRIT/Miles/stankonia/madvillainy. I group them together cuz these all come close to second but nowhere near close to first for me. This thing is smart funny conscious and it goes hard. Literally changed my life this album is everything to me

Great album though The Ecstatic is my fave Mos Def record
Everyone should like this album
my favorite old school album ever
I think the fact that he heard it through a commercial first, distorted his view of it. There literally nothing pop about "Umi says" 😂
Has anyone noticed Mykes lisp in the 2012 dehh reviews? I’ve always wanted to know the reason for that. Can you tell me the reason for this mystery myke?

Digable Planets Blowout Comb dropped science, and this album has been the only album after that one to carry the torch. Kendrick came close, but didn’t cover the scope of Mos’ gem. Solidarity ✊🏽

Ah dehh
Review yelawolf new album
To me this is a classic album
Dead End Hip Hop Hey I know Feefo probably heard about what happened to Nipsey and idk how much you guys are gonna go into it in the next podcast but as opposed to thinking it may have been gang-related, there have been some articles talking about a movie he was going to be in (a documentary) about a man who said he had a cure for aids that may have been killed by pharmaceutical companies to keep from losing profits and the over under is that Nipsey was barking up the wrong tree and had too much influence. I'm not saying this is what happened, it'd just be interesting to see what you guys think of that idea.
This one had 2 grow on me
dude in the background mouth drop when eminem slim shady lp came second place for the most votes.
Umi Says , does not have a genre type class ... it is it’s own entity
Well I disagree with the Brother who said I don't care and blurted out that he thought Umi Says was a Pop Song. Idiot reaction and typical for people who are not paying attention to where the artist is going. Yasiin Bey(Mos Def) created a classic. It's an Iconic masterpiece. I grew up in Brooklyn left to live in Europe years later. What that did for me who is also an artist. It diversified my taste. Yasiin Bey is dope. He fits right in the pockets of the world. His album is represents Brooklyn straight up. When you listen to hhis Islamic prayer in the beginning it holds you. This was before 9/11: Beautiful. In 2005,I decided to finally purchase the album. It was the first Hip Hop album besides Public Enemy and 2Pac's It's me Against The World and Eyez On Me ,An album that I can hear straight through. So Umi Says is not a pop song by the way.
Kodak black dying to live
Ya'll finally gotta vote for Scarface now...
Yep this is for damn sure a classic. I still want Mos Def and Talib Kweli to make another album.
He is a profit
Oh nah myke is tripping about umi says..lmfao that is not a pop song what so ever
Y'all spend waayyy to much time talking about whether an album is a classic. Just review whatever the album is the one that got the most votes. And then at the very end of the review, very briefly discuss whether are not you guys think it's a classic. Because otherwise ya'll skip over what makes this album so good because you're caught up on whether or not it's a classic.
Good album, but I think the ecstatic is underrated and a far better album
