  • @jsmarty1

    @jsmarty1

    4 жыл бұрын

    If anything, Meddle is the most underrated album from their work. While Echoes is absolutely incredible and it carries the albums on its shoulders, the rest of the tracks, apart from Seamus imo, are utterly fantastic as well. Fearless is golden, A Pillow of Winds is one of the most relaxing songs ever made with a close 2nd being San Tropez later on, and the opener One of These Days is brilliant as well. Echoes obviously gets a lot of credit, which it 110% deserves, but it’s not the only exceptional track on the album.

    I'm just gonna have to mention my favorite album of all time here: Honeysuckle Strange by Howlin' Maggie. It got some critical attention for a very short while after its release in 1996, and a few of the tracks got some indie and alt-rock radio play, but its themes of self-destructive behavior, industry bullshit, frustration, and mental health are well-executed and eternal. If you are reading this, there is a chance you have possibly heard either "Alcohol" or "I'm a Slut", but I'd implore anyone with even a passing interest in 90's alt-rock to give the album a full listen as it is a masterclass in cohesion of the seemingly disparate elements of grit and haunting.

If Mos died at 24 no one would know who he is, outside of maybe Blackstar and a couple of lyricist lounge tracks. Having said that I would definitely put him over Em, and probably over 3 Stacks, because 3 Stacks doesn't have a solo album, unless you count the love below, but that isn't a rap/hip hop album, he only raps on like 3 songs from it.

    Part of me wants to have your centrist and reasonable take on Fishmans, and I definitely think overhyping is in itself a problem. But damn, this band is probably the only time I've ever legitimately agreed with any music circle's niche obsession. No other band gives me such a life affirming feeling.

    Yeeeeeee Fishmans made it to the channel. Anyway, i was like Fantano and dismissed the reggae tracks at first but the more i listened to the album (aswell as hearing their other stuff that wasn’t Long Season or Uchu Nippon Setagaya) the more the reggae or rather dub tracks started growing on me hard. There is something about the playfulness of songs like Thank You or Hikouki that just gets me going. But overall tho, i am one of those people who think 98.12.28 is the best live album of all time. Not only for it being the last performance by Fishmans but also because every song just hits a chord with you. Whether it be the dreamy tracks like Night Cruising and In the Flight or the more expansive epics like Yurameki in the Air and Long Season. This album will always hold a special place in my heart and seeing it get more recognition outside of RYM and /mu/ makes me very happy. Sorry if i was overdoing it with the gushing. I’m just so in love with this album.

    Personally I have a feeling that the whole Lake of Tears discography is underrated and somewhat overlooked, but their original send-off album The Neonai is overlooked even in the community. Recorded as a final album in the contract termination deal with their then label, Black Mark, it was basically recorded by frontman Daniel Brennare alone, with the help of synths and drum machines. The result was a trippy, somber, sometimes heavy, but mostly incredibly emotional adventure through a sugar coated, decaying fantasy land. As much as I love A Crimson Cosmos, it is well received and even relatively well known. Another album I could consider underrated is Swans' The Burning World. Fans of the band are quick to give it flak for ditching industrial elements and the noise, saying that it doesn't sound like Swans and so on and so forth… But. The hypnotic nature of their music is still very much there (the strings on Let It Come Down are mesmerizing, yet no one, NO ONE talks about that track), this, in my opinion, is the album Gira found his voice on, and I will stand on the position that, without The Burning World, we wouldn't get The Great Annihilator, Soundtracks for the Blind, Seer, and so on. Plus, it's an even better introducing to Swans than The Great Annihilator; I would know because I got introduced to Swans through it, and it showed me that there's more to them than just abrasive, violent, no holds barred noise rock they're known on certain places on the internet for.

    Deadringer was definitely the thing I was thinking about as well and would probably have dropped myself. It's the only one I can think of that I really really like and isn't as known among people I talk to as I wish it were. It may be my lack of experience in the rap/hip hop field in general, but I find it an invigorating listen every time. It's either that or Roger Glover's massive joint-project rock opera "The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast", but truth be told, I have no idea what kind of reputation that one has. It was just something I borrowed from a library once and has been one of my absolute favorites for years now. Other than that, while I definitely have albums I like alot that either get ignored or dissed, none of them I can really argue are underrated, because they deserve some if not all they get in those case. I like Dio's "Lock Up the Wolves" quite alot, but if I were to loan an album for someone to get into the band, this is not the one I'm picking. I actually really dig Black Sabbath's "Born Again" for it's trashy aesthetic, but trashy is precisely the word and isn't really something I can safely recommend. I wish people talked more about "Carolina County Ball" by Elf, but as far as Ronnie James' career is concerned, Elf isn't even close to his most noteworthy stuff. FIREPOWER by Judas Priest has some of Priest's best chops to date, but I feel like that is widely acknowledged by the people this information is relevant to in this post "death of rock/metal" era.

    As much as people loved to hate Limp Bizkit, their debut album is insane and immensely underrated. The riffs by Wes Borland, the funky basslines of a then teen Sam Rivers along with his cousin John Otto with some tight drumming. Sam & John studied jazz in college and you can really tell, the groove, tightness and allround instrumental prowess is really something most people haven't discovered since they hate the band solely because of Fred Durst and the fact that they've only heard Rollin' and Nookie.

    @@PaulRobinsonOk Dub is rooted in reggae, and several of the tracks on the album are, by definition, reggae, or at least reggae fusion, with melodic lead bass, accented rim shot beats and one drop rhythms, and skanking rhythm guitar on the upbeats. I dont think the fact that there is a decent amount of it on the album really hurts it at all either. Fishmans, in my opinion, were the best non Jamaican reggae practitioners. They had a very idiosyncratic, experimental, and uniquely Japanese take on it.
