MoS & BvS : A Whale!

/ reelanalysis (one time donations preferred)
I analyze the potential significance of the whale that shows up in BvS through the lens of Moby Dick & the Belly of the Whale
List of Errata:
1) I mention that Bruce refers to himself as a hunter, when in fact he refers to his ancestors. When I say he refers to himself as a hunter, I mean he is essentially justifying and acknowledging his own actions as a hunter which is the essential implication.
2) Technically Bruce's parents are in a tomb and not a grave. Though a seemingly small detail, this is more than mere pedantry. In a film steeped in the notion of opposites, it is important to distinguish the idea that his parents are placed in an "above ground" tomb and not buried beneath the earth "below ground".

    13:28 I also always thought the whole scene is Batman throwing Superman down into his tomb. Also ties back into that Bat-monster he see's in his nightmares. When his mask is broken while he drags Superman, he kind of looks like a Bat-monster.

    I always thought that Bruce's reference that the Waynes were hunters i thought it was a reference to Van Hellsing (Batman) to hunt Dracula (Superman). But referring to Ahab is feels way more appropiate for his obsession and rage towards the monster who caused him so much suffering. Great video as always

    Honestly, I think with Zack, it's often all of the above. I mean, Lex even calls Superman "wabbit" in reference to Elmer fudd (a perpetual hunter) and Bugs Bunny (the perpetually hunted), Batman is the hunter and Superman, the hunted. The "blood of my blood" line from Lex is certainly referencing Dracula so you could very well be right too.

    Also, you may have noticed some minor parallels to the epic of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh begins as a terrible tyrant (much like the way Batman kills and brands people). The gods send a wildman Enkidu (Superman) from the heavens to challenge him. They fight, become friends, and then they fight evil together. Enkidu falls in battle, which really shakes Gilgamesh who then goes on a journey to find an elixir of immortality. In Justice League, Batman succeeds, which is where Gilgamesh fails, unless you count that he still hasn't solved his own mortality and that resurrecting Superman was the only way his Justice could live on. Although, your mention of justoposition also seems to show up when you compare the imagery of Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Enkidu who looks more like Batman with his spear is the one from the heavens, and Gilgamesh is the one from below. www.google.com/search?q=gilgamesh+and+enkidu&rlz=1C1CHZL_enUS785US785&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiuudHg-8bgAhUDVd8KHf7nCloQ_AUIDigB#imgrc=awLpJo_5wt3OAM:

    I just also want to tell something I noticed in the movie (idk if you have approached this in your videos): There exists a paralell between thomas wayne death scene and 2nd kryptonite bomb shoted on Superman, in both fists closing the glove sound is the same, and both of them get shoted before punching. My only explanation/meaning for this is Batman being the bad guy and Thomas Wayne/Superman trying to stop him

    I love your videos and am a huge fan of the DCEU myself. Is there anyway you could do an analysis of Wonder Woman? While I'm sure it's not nearly as layered an onion as Snyder's films, I'm sure there are plenty of themes and parallels that have to do with ancient greek mythology. I'm sure you are already working on a multitude of other films and I do not expect a WW analysis next week or even within the month as I know you put a lot of hard work into these videos, but it would be cool to see one in the future. You should really expand out in terms of social media though. Your videos are a huge rallying cry and voice of reason for the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement.

    I tend to think the political comparisons are more like a fog, perhaps Lex's fog, whereas the grand myth/journey is about the bigger things at work than where political lines are. Other than your political allusions, which may have more to do with my biases than anything, this was your strongest video yet.

  • @ReelAnalysis

    @ReelAnalysis

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks. I think the specific politics being discussed is justified since Batman uses the exact logic that was used for U.S. intervention. Comparisons must be drawn, though I'll readily admit I likely don't have the full picture on that except for some general criticism on media fanning flames and the blundering and vicious nature of the current U.S. foreign policy. I invite you to expand more on your notion of Lex's fog, sounds interesting. :)

  • @RedLion800

    @RedLion800

    5 жыл бұрын

    Reel Analysis Oh, don't get me wrong, the parallels seem justified enough in how you saw them, and I do think it leans more heavily on the media being more than the enemies than anything, it's just something I don't particularly like because like I said, there's always bigger things in play, which is kind of what makes the politics in Dark Knight Returns more peripheral to the story than stark commentary. I'm definitely working with that kind of concept with a more stream-of-consciousness kind article that focuses more on theming than researched analysis. Thematic-wise, I see the movie as an epic about confronting giants in a fog, and that fog is usually a double-edged sword: one side being Lex's fog of criminal, political, and media string pulling; the other side being the perception of the film - good or bad, for better or worse.

Then why do clever people do videos like this? Blind fanboys everyone of us? xD To me things like this is what makes me a Snyder fan, in some(perhaps all to various degrees) of his films, there are lots of things to analyze. My attitude is there's no harm in reading into creative works that we love. In fact I've given some thought to the delay.. If you notice, Batman's cry matches more with the beast on Krypton. Your analysis is great and it proves why this movie did'nt work. These kinds of ideas just can't work on Batman and superman because these characters should'nt be that deep. you can't take a character that have his own History and mythiology and just changé it completely just to make a story that you like. These characters work the best when they are adapted faithfully, the best exemple is when superman and Batman first met each other in the World finest episodes in the superman animated series, the writers of that show knew how to make these two different and opposite characters work together whithout changing the core of what make them who they are.

    So go watch Wandavision and get literally nothing from it, just a set up for the next chapter of a hype machine with poppy colors and cute quips. BvS is the most comic book movie of comic book movies. It's a commentary on the mythology and a reconciling of the mythology in the modern world. Literally every major comic book run does things like this with the characters, elevating them higher based on the mythology or deconstructing them based on it. A "faithful" adaptation on your terms is the safer than safe Superman Returns which, like the Donner films, have zero resemblance to the comic books. Read something like Darkseid war and then be like "actually BvS is too deep because I don't want to try with it"
