Only thing I'm not particularly fond of in this movie is the arcana concept, while I applaud writers for having the guts to try something new even with established series, whether what they try works or not, the MK universe just doesn't really need an explanation for the powers each person has because we've always been able to accept that the characters just HAVE those powers

I'm pretty sure Jax's Arcana would just be enhanced strength, but since he had the mechanical arms, the Arcana augmented them that still granted Jax his enhanced strength while giving his arms a much needed upgrade.

You can thank trevor goddard (1995 MK film's kano actor) for that. He was english, but played kano as aussie. Ed boon and the MK team liked it so much, they've had him portrayed as austrailian every iteration since. Great performance by josh lawson too, obviously

This is a perfect example of why you don't 🤬with perfectly good lore to do something "different" You get nonsensically magical, self enhancing, robot stick arms that can never be explained....

People give actors a lot of credit for doing their own stunts, but honestly I appreciate Kano’s actor’s opinion on it: if the stunt actor can look better and be safer doing the stunt than an actor can, let them do their job! It’s what they’re there for.

Exactly! Tom Cruise doing his own stunts works for the movie because he's good enough at it to give the director more options for shots and angles without hindering production. If he sucked at it and demanded he be allowed to do it anyway, despite it hurting the production, nobody would think that was cool or okay. Actors who think in terms of "what does this do for the movie" instead of "what does this do for me" are undoubtedly the best to work with.

i think the arcana works the exact same way as a stand arrow/requiem arrow, the stand arrow gives you an ability depending on the state of your soul/personality but the requiem arrow gives you an ability depending on what you need in that EXACT moment. Liu Kang and Jax are perfect examples of both principles

You and the 71 people have to be on some sort of drug because the story was a nothing but disrespect to what mk is, the choreography is horrible for a Mortal Kombat movie, yes the fight scenes should be the one of best out of all the movies because it’s is a MORTAL KOMBAT movie, they extremely slow, the Movie “blood and Bone” staring Michael jai white has far better fighting choreography, I put no blame on the actors only who ever tf played cole, his character is a Big F**k you to Mortal Kombat

I went to the open cast call to be an extra in this film, and they also filmed many scenes just outside of my workplace. They had camera rigging and lightning setup inside and blacked out all our windows to where they were shooting. I got to watch them film a car crash scene though. It was pretty awesome haha

Casting Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion is one of the best casting choices ive ever seen. Dude looks like and is such a badass.

2 details I loved about the movie: 1. During parts of the fights they filmed from a side view perspective similar to the video game. 2. Establishing all the sub factions from the MK universe(Shirai Ryu, Lin Kuei, & the Black Dragon).

7:21 “With a painful shattering, Jax loses his second amendment rights.” That was sooo underrated, that’s fucking funny.

Movie is freaking awesome. The practicality made the movie really stand out. I marked out for Nitara and Reiko. Never thought they'd ever be in a movie. Kabal looked dope af.

Kano’s actor did a really great job in this role. He was honestly my favorite part of it

Hanzo Hasashi fight with the Lin Kuei ninjas was insane to watch. Of course the fight with Sub-Zero vs. Scorpion is easily the biggest highlight of the movie. I love re-watching this movie a lot. Plus I'm glad Jax's Arms are more real here then the 90's movie did.

Definitely had a very good time with this one despite acknowledging the many flaws in it, it was hitting the same ape area of my brain as Godzilla vs Kong which is needed every now and then

Kano absolutely steals any scene he’s in. He’s hilarious to the average viewer but he’s 10x funnier to any Australian watching purely bc of how culturally accurate his dialogue is, he just sounds like a slightly drunk brickie at the pub on a Wednesday night

I think Lamberts Raiden was perfect for the movie. =D And he was a fantastic guy off camera, buying the others food, and financing some of the project.

I did _kinda_ like this movie, my biggest criticism of it though is that they actually made Bi-Han responsible for Hanzo's family's death instead of being framed by Quan Chi I really love that in the games because Scorpion as to keep the guilt that he aimed his vengeance at the wrong man and was working for his enemy all along

in the old games sub-zero was the one responsible it wasn't until mk9 that he was framed

In the games it also looked like it was Bi-Han who killed the Hasashi family. It was only revealed later that the culprit was actually Quan Chi using magic. So it very well could be that the Bi-Han we see in the opening isn't actually Bi-Han.

20:40 not going to lie I laughed in the theatre a lot in that scene

I will say, while I really don’t like the arcana thing, I do like how Cole unlocked his. Thematically, anyway. It really tied in Hanzo’s love for his family from the games. Even in MK11, he talks about them and how much he misses them, it was nice connection to have Cole show similar feelings so explicitly. I wish some else had attacked them, though. Maybe Kintaro or Jade since they weren’t particularly powerful, but they would have still posed a threat to normal people. That way, there would have been the danger without having Goro die.

Absolutely loved this film. This and The Invisible Man 2020 are the only two films I've ever watched twice back to back.

Loved this one. Sure it had it's flaws, but considering it had just over 1/3 the budget of the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie (without adjusting for inflation), I'd say it turned out pretty damn good. Cole was definitely the weak point, but it's hard to blame the actor since, like you said, the character was a studio demand. He basically did the best with what he had, so I can't even be mad at him for it. Here's hoping the movie's success at least prompts Warner Bros. to give them a bigger budget and a little more freedom with the films to come. With everyone they had working on this one--everyone, cast and crew alike--you know there's some fantastic potential to be brought out once the checks get bigger and the amount of studio meddling gets smaller.

Mortal Kombat fits as a movie franchise/trilogy, it has good characters and potential so I’m hoping for more

@@Hateful_Rex Since when has Raiden ever seen his Kombatants as anything but useful tools? Dude's been sacrificing Kombatants for the greater good since forever.

Honestly, this is probably the best mortal kombat movie. This remake adds a lot to the franchise. No character is really wasted in this movie. Every ounce of screen time they get, they make it count.

1995 and Snow Blind are the best MK movies we have, Scorpions Revenge is eh, and the others, including this one, are awful.

Omg I love Kabal's look in this he has always been my go to fighter in the games

I love how Kung lao says "flawless victory" when he actually has one from the games, unlike the classic movie, where Liu Kang says it for no reason

Pretty sure Liu said it in the original film to mock Shang Tsung. It did sound pretty sarcastic and harsh the way Robin Shou delivered the line.

Like I dont WANT to relate to some random guy you inserted in. I wanna see how you're doing this live action movie with the original characters.

So I actually just got this movie today on Blueray, and after watching it and the bonus features I found out something pretty cool that I'm actually surprised that you forgot to mention James. When you brought up Joe Talsim (aka Sub Zero), and how he was so skilled in martial arts and so fast that the crew had to ask him to slow down just so that the cameras could actually pick up what he was doing, you didn't mention that the Director mentioned that the only other actor in film history who had to be asked that for the same reason was Bruce Lee.

Pretty sure Yayan Ruhian and Cecep Arif had to slow down in John Wick 3 too, though I guess the director really did not mention it

What is awsome is that they did call backs to 5 of the characters fatalities, kung lous at 17:15 from mortal kombat 10, shang tsungs soul suck fatality from the first mortal kombat at 19:54, Jax’s at 20:41 from 9 or 10 (not sure which one I get them confused sometimes), liu kangs at 21:36 from 10 and scorpion’s at 25:35 from multiple games. Now that’s dedication to the source, it’s annoying as hell when films try to add their own interpretations (like the explanation of everyone’s powers but still) to the movie.

I love that plan, I imagine the protagonists are like this, the second one will have as many people wanted Liu Kang as the protagonist to fight Shang Tsung and Raiden as the protagonist in the third movie to fight Shao Kahn in the invasion of Outworld

The set up is one of the biggest turn offs for me honestly. It feels like a prequel to a movie that hasn't been made yet.

Dang it; you actually just made me a fan of this film. The special effects work behind the scenes and the amount of authenticity and love that went towards the landscapes and lore are reasons why this movie shines. Much appreciate your enthusiasm and fellow MK nerdage, James!

I thought the story was wonky but damn the fighting made me so happy

literally just finished watching this so now I can finally watch it

Even if the movie isn't great I still get really happy when thinking about it. The love everyone had during production makes my heart flutter and it's a great feeling! Great vid btw!

I hope there's a way for Kabal to return. He was the most badass looking out of everyone, only Sub-zero and Scorpion were close, but Kabal looked better hands down. And for how well he was done, we didn't get anywhere near enough of him, was so disappointed when he died. It was easy to forget that he was 90% cgi and his abilities were so satisfying to watch on the screen

no one is ever truly dead in Mortal Kombat, and they can do. alot with Kabal considering he's a bit of anti hero, heck the modern games have him as a straight up good guy.

As someone who doesnt have any nostalgic attachment to Mortal Kombat, I really enjoyed this movie!

the movie was enjoyable only reason it got hated on is because mk Zealots didn't like how simplified the plot is, and they just like to compare 90s as better while i liked both, if i really wanted a better lore driven story i just play the video games. all i cared about was seeing Fatalities and Shooting MotherF@#*ing LaserBeams!

He needs to. The last MK kill counts were copyright striked due to its inclusion. So he remade the counts with him saying it to get around it

I love how Jame's is wearing the mk1 costume really bring out the nostalgia

My theory for Kano is since Sonya stabbed Kano in the eye in MK2 Kano will come back with his iconic metal plate eye

As a kid MORTAL KOMBAT! was the only thing I played so seeing the movie is SICK

Fun fact: Jax Brigg’s actor is the brother to Billy who’s most known for his laugh in Double Toasted’s bad movie reviews, which James and Chelsea was interviewed by, which was quite the interview given it involves two of my favorite channels (Dead Meat is still #1) 😁

I loved this movie, probably one of the only movies I've watched at home and didn't touch my phone. It was goofy but kept me entertained throughout and had plenty of great kills and gore. I get why people may not have liked it but it worked for me.

It’s the second movie I’ve seen in theaters since quarantine

I like how you used the character models in the numbers kount. Klassic.

The kung lao hat buzzsaw bisection and Sonya’s purple ring torso kill are both pretty much shot for shot versions of fatalities in the new games.

I just burst out laughing as soon as James popped up at the very start screaming ‘Mortal Kombat’ in an OG Scorpion costume. Legendary. Good luck and best wishes on the wedding to both James and Chelsea.

I just saw the full movie and it is hands down the best mortal kombat ive seen. Fights and cast were amazing and the kills definitely got my attention

The casting of this movie was on point, damn

Having them somehow establish that cybernetics was a thing in this movie Jax's arms and Kano's eye would have made better sense. Kano as he got his power and was using it could have slowly burned his face to reveal the metal like the original mk I Kano.

Theory: Since Kano got stabbed in the eye by Sonya, I think he might return with a cyber eye if we end up getting a sequel.

The one thing they could do to fix the Arcana is if in the next movie we run into someone (hopefully Nightwolf)with powers but no marking and find out they just massively help unlock power, but aren’t the only way.

That would make a lot of sense. Like the marking is a shortcut or something. Everyone has *something*, but only once you know it exists and actually try to unlock it. The marking is the Elder Gods basically going "Hey you! You need to do something about this tournament."

Heres some things i noticed about the villains "deaths", It was never revealed or shown if Kabal had his burn marks which results in his speed in the game, but due to the Arcana ability, that could result in his burn marks, Kano getting stabbed in the eye could result in his Mechanical eye, Mileena in the games had multiple clones made of her, the one in the movie could also just be a clone.

Joe Taslim is incredible as Sub-Zero! I would love to see James cover “The Raid” since it has such incredibly awesome fight scenes and messy kills!

He was so wasted in this movie. I remember hearing how he was too fast for the rest of the cast, that interview told me how shitty all the fight scenes with the other characters would be.

"GET OVER HERE!!" Kano killed it from beginning to end, and you look dope in Scorpion's tunic/getup, I'm really looking forward to MK2 with Johnny's debut.
