Good video. Just wanted to share that there's now another replacement switch option available from Helder Game Tech. Just finished replacing mine (after ripping off a pad and running a bodge wire) and it works well. And it was less than five bucks. Here's a link if you or anyone else is looking for one: www.heldergametech.com/shop/gba/gba-power-switch/

Holy crap. I was literally looking at original GBA power switch because I was messing around with a temperamental one in one of my GBA. I simply took it apart and clean it as well as I could but since the pad is a bit worn and wouldn't last forever I wanted to get some replacements just in case. Check online and the cheapest one I found was like $11....I was wtf.

I'm not so sure the pricing is because of the current pandemic, it might be that the switches have not been manufactured for a long time and they have just been selling what they had in stock, the AGS-101 experienced the same thing (Although there are clone 101's on the market now)

While I disagree, that is a possibility. However, given that these switches are MUCH cheaper and easier to manufacture than an LCD, and they also take up a bunch less room than a stack of screens (they come on a reel for parts-picker machines), I don't think it's the case. There's no reason why dozens of AliExpress stores just randomly closed all of a sudden or no longer supply a part that was never really in high demand. Unlike backlit LCD's during the current backlighting craze.... Also, another store opened up on AliExpress, while I was working on this video, that is now offering switches for about $10 ea. I fully expect to see that price continue to fall back down to near where it was originally. Thanks for your comment!

Just checked AliExpress. They have lots of these in the $0.50-$1.00 range now. I ordered 4 for my own use. Shipped from the US my total came to $6. I could have shipped them from China for $3 less. Looks like power switch repair is now a go!

I was unable to find any for a decent price. Have you received them yet? I saw some but like the video stated, they seemed to be the wrong size (like for a DS).

hi, Please suggest the below problem. My GBA [with ips screen] does not turn up with two 1.3v rechargeable AA batteries. But working fine with two 1.5v AA batteries. Please suggest I have to replace the capacitors. Previously it worked fine on 2.6v AA with ips screen

  • @KyleAwsm

Hi, I think literally you're not getting enough voltage from your 1.3V (ea.) rechargeable batteries - Start with the easy stuff. You need 3V total to run the GBA and supply enough power to the DC regulator. With 2.6V, you simply don't seem to have enough, ESPECIALLY for an IPS-modded system like yours. As for it working before on the same rechargeable ones, I can't say for sure. They may have been charged-up slightly too much, possibly within the operating limits/voltage needs of the GBA. Better get out a multimeter and begin checking! Remember: That regulator won't start unless it has enough supply voltage. Best wishes finding more capable batteries!

@@KyleAwsmThanks for reply. All rechargeable batteries have 1.2v approximately prev. it is working fine. I really wants to know the reason. why it stop working with 2.4-2.6v. You can also try with rechargeable batteries.

Out of curiosity, while we wait for prices to drop would I be able to bridge some connections to keep the Gameboy always on so I can at least power it on by putting in batteries and power it off by removing them?

The first switch you showed on ali was for the SP. You can order a cheaper switch under $5 which is an adapter board that uses the SP/GBC pw switch on the GBA. Many prices are still low on many items regardless of whats going on in the world.

I havea question... I cleaned out my gba switch inside by desoldering the metal piece and using isopropyl alcohol to remove the gunk and dirt but when I put it on with my gba intact, at around the 8 hour mark it starts doing it again and I'm using a Rechargeable CleanJuice battery from handheld legends. This did this before too with Energizer Ultimate lithium batteries as well.. I want to know if me replacing the power switch would actually resolve the issue cause in theory the battery life should be over 14 hours

I think you might have missed something in your explanation: What does the system start doing? If the power cuts/battery dies before you think it should, I have heard that people have had mixed experiences with the Clean Juice kits, especially with modded systems. Feel free to message me on Instagram @kyleawsm and we can talk in more detail about it there. 👍🏻

@@KyleAwsm I tested it on lithium ion batteries before without purchasing the CleanJuice kit and its doing the same thing. My gba sp works no problem when I flicker its switch but the regular gba will reset constantly after the 6 to 8 hour mark where5it should be close to 15 hours. So i think the Switch is indeed faulty and hopefully replacing it solves the issue

  • @KyleAwsm

If the power switch works without issue to power the system on, and then after a specific amount of time of gameplay the system begins to have power issues (and it does the same thing with the Clean Power kit AND other Lithium batteries), I would say that you have a problem with some other component on your system besides the switch. When under load, the lithium batteries can only output enough power for so long, thus being unable to satisfy the system's power needs once they are depleted enough. Play time on a full charge can also be skewed by what kinds of mods you have installed in your system, i.e. backlit display, amp, etc. because consumption will be quicker/higher with such mods.

Check into something called "Chipquik" - It's a solder with a very long plastic state that makes it a bit easier to remove pieces with multiple solder joints. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching!
