More Diesel Power from Less Fuel? Lets test it and see! PowerJet Cummins VE 12V Injector Testing

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video I do some testing and comparing of a set of ‪@pddofficial‬ PowerJet Stage 2 Ve Injectors versus 7x.011 sac injectors. Testing shows they deliver less fuel while making more power with lower smoke and egt at the same power level. I can sustain about 10% more power at the same egt level while towing heavy (17000-20000lbs) up a grade.

I bought a set of the stage 1 power jets for a VE 2 or 3 months ago. At the time I bought mine, their website said good up to 500hp. Now it’s saying up to 350. I’m still happy with them though. I replaced some 5x.012’s, and feel I still have the same power, but way less smoke. I’m running a S300G also. Your videos and testing of the turbo made me follow what you did.

I told them their 2s should be a stage 1. I have less driving around smoke with these than I did with the stock 6x.009. Probably mainly because I had worked a lot on limiting fueling with the 7x.011 so it didn’t trail smoke accelerating all the time. Have you noticed any fuel mileage increase? I did one tank and then the next I didn’t and my driving has had a lot of power testing thrown in which scews the results too. I have to make a 400mi run tomorrow maybe I can behave long enough to tell a bit. I usually try to do at least 1500miles to get a reliable average.

  • @Kimmels_garage

I feel like I gained a little mpg. I made a lot of changes to my truck recently, so I don’t have years worth of averages like I had. I just converted my truck from a stock everything and auto to a G56, steed speed manifold, S300G, head studs, rebuilt pump, 5x.012’s then swapped to the power jets after a few thousand miles. I just got 16.2 mpg on my last fill up. That’s up probably 1 mpg from what I was getting with the 5x.012’s. My truck is a 4x4 with 3.54 gears and 35” tires. I did install the silver spring in the afc and backed the star wheel out, and machined the afc cover to get full travel of the fuel pin.

The extended cab w350 I drove all the time hauling the pulling truck usually got about 16. The 4wd and the truck catching more under frame air really seemed to hurt mileage as it had 370s and an hx40 I figured it was about 300hp. My current setup drives and hauls way better than it did. The 300g is a lot more drivable with similar power to the 60mm hx40 and egt control. How do you like yours?

  • @Kimmels_garage

I really like it. I kind of wish I could have done a piece at a time to see how each part affected power, but it was one of those things. If my truck is gonna be down, I’m going to do everything I’ve been wanting to do. I may need to play with the afc some more. I get some black smoke when I first accelerate, but, I don’t feel the surge of power until I get to around 15 lbs of boost, then it climbs rapidly to close to 35. I know Ive heard people say it takes fuel to “light” the turbo, but I don’t know if that’s what I’m feeling happen. My EGT’s driving empty on flat ground at 70-75 are just under 800. I guess that’s good? I didn’t have gages before all this.

I have 2 sets of DDP nozzles in the stage III configuration. One set I plopped on some rebuilt Bosch sticks. It was over $400 just for the nozzles. They are running a special that ends on July 1st 2024. $400 on your Bosch cores. I had a spare head I yanked out the injectors cleaned them up and sent them in to get done. $426+ $11 for me to USPS the cores to DDP. I am going to run 18psi from a Carter in tank pump for a '98 Ram. My VE is a THD 'Maxfueled" build. The part number for the Carter pump is here : CQAFP Fuel Pump Module Assembly M2496269: Fuel Pump, Sending Unit and Strainer it drops in like the factory module that has no pump. Haven't figured how to get the fuel gauge to work yet! What did you do to get your VE to handle 30-60lbs of supply pressure?

I am a gambler none of the pumps I have run on the stand except the one off old yellow have anything special to keep the seal in. The pump on my crew cab has never been off and is all stock parts and it regularly runs 18psi at idle and almost 50 at full boost. 20 years ago I had a 24v electric pump setup on old yellow and it would not maintain fuel pressure under load. That is when I put the aeromotive setup on it.

It would make it easier to compare but obviously there is more to how much power a nozzle makes than just the flow rating. As a buyer I prefer a realistic horsepower value to flow ratings since you could easily have a nozzle flow a lot but make no power. The 12x.012 nozzles I use on the bench are a fine example the flow fuel like crazy but won’t make a lick of power.

So better atomization resulting in less unburnt fuel is the only reason I can fathom for more power out of less fuel. Am i missing something? Possibly timing of how fast the fuel is injected in the stroke as well?

  • @bcbloc02

    @bcbloc02

    10 ай бұрын

Yes I believe the altered spray pattern produces more turbulence in the cylinder so the fuel mixes and burns faster so it can better expand and do work before the piston is so far down the bore it’s just making smoke and heat and not more cylinder pressure.

What did you run supply pressure at with the 7 x.11 injectors? Camera angle didn't let us see gauge! When you ran first set at 30 PSI you got a lot more variation in supply pressure, that when you ran them at 60 PSI, so first set testing may have been hampered by supply pressure affect? I think it is called a tech 10 because it is a 10hp. It will barely run an a pump full tilt. A p pump on more than about 200cc will choke it. It needs to be at least a 20hp to do very much with it. Even my 14mm ve will choke it down at high rpm’s.

On the Deere that requires an injection line order swap because the direction of rotation is backwards between the two your ih might turn the same as the case. Unless rules preclude it modifying the engine to use a p pump will give you a lot more performance and be more reliable and those pumps can be had very affordable.

I take it you are happy with the PowerJet injectors? Do they appear to use good nozzles? I've got a P-pump 12V and am looking at their PowerJet's or else Dynamite Diesel's. I am pretty sure the powerjet nozzles are made by ddp especially since they are pilot hole and ddp just released they have the patent on that. Their smoke on acceleration is much less than any other nozzle of the same flow rate. Stage 2s can solidly make 500hp with a p-pump but you don't have to turn them up that much if you don't want to. I have tested 60-64 and I don't like them. My 57-65s300g beats it at everything below 2500rpm where I normally drive. The Agressor 62-65 would be a good choice if you want that 500+hp match to what the injectors can do.
