Moon Sighting to End the Lunacy of Moon Fighting

Ойын-сауық

Support Zaytuna College: zaytuna.edu/illuminate
For centuries, Muslims followed the prophetic practice (sunnah) of moon sighting to determine the beginning of lunar months. However, in recent times, there is a call to abandon this important sunnah in favor of calculation and a pre-determined calendar. This has lead to the lunacy of “moon fighting”-back-and-forth quarreling that is renewed every Ramadan. In this video, Dr. Youssef Ismail, who has a PhD in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and is a professor of astronomy, math, and jurisprudence at Zaytuna College, takes us on an extraordinary journey through the science and practice of moon sighting and explains why this timeless sunnah is a critical part of our worship and connection to our Creator.

Humankind has safely landed on the moon in July 1969, thanks to the significant advance in the field of Astrophysics. However Muslims are still searching for the new crescent moon even though the visibility is hindered due to the weather, dense cloud cover, atmospheric pollution, humidity and other impediments despite the presence of the new crescent moon in the sky. It is an embarassment and a shame that the Muslim ummah is disunited in deciding important dates of the various events in the Muslim calendar. If it is imperative that Muslims uphold the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad in this modern age why is it that both the Imams of Masjidil Haraam and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and for that matter all Imams world-wide are not using the Prophet's original method of determining the time of the five mandatory prayers (e.g. measuring the lengths of the shadows cast by a wooden pole) but are instead using the modern clock based on pre-determined astronomical calculations? The following Quranic verses allude to the feasibility of calculating the important dates in the Muslim calendar: فَالِقُ الإِصْبَاحِ وَجَعَلَ اللَّيْلَ سَكَنًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ حُسْبَانًا ذَلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ (الأنعام: 96) Al-An'am, 6:96: (He is the) Cleaver (of) the daybreak and He has made the night (for) rest and the sun and the moon (for) RECKONING. That (is the) ordaining (of) the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ مَا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ يُفَصِّلُ الآياتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَعْلَمُونَ (يونس: 5) Yunus, 10:5: He (is) the One Who made the sun a shining light, and the moon a reflected light and determined for it phases, that you may know (the) number (of) the years and the CALCULATION (of time). Not created Allah that except in truth. He explains the Signs for a people (who) know. الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ (الرحمن: 5) ar-Rahman, 55:5: The sun and the moon (orbit) by (precise) CALCULATION, Let us put a stop to the hassle and the shameful disunity in the Muslim ummah and decide once and for all on a lasting paradigm in determining the dates of the important events in the Muslim calendar. It would help tremendously the Muslims who form the minority in Western countries to plan ahead for their holidays. In-shaa Allah.

@@truthseekerultimate8331You make a good point, and people forget that the Prophet gave his ruling at a time when modern scientific calculation technologies had not yet been invented. Now that we do have those technologies available to us today, it's absurd to shun them in favor of an unscientific method under the misguided belief that the Prophet wanted us to remain stuck to old obsolete ways because that is somehow the true reflection of true faith.

Just to point out , the word “hilal” translates to “new crescent” and NOT “new moon”, as you have translated in the hadith at 1:24 The word hilal refers to the first visible phase of the moon. However “new moon” by definition is invisible. The month in this Islamic calendar begins with the new crescent 🌙 (hilal), and it does NOT begin with the new moon 🌑

May the Almighty Allah jalla-jalla-lahoo bless you for your wonderful explanation and confirmation of the Sunnah of our master and beloved of Allah subhana wa ta'aala Maulana Muhammad-e-Mustafa sallalaho aleihi wa sallam. May He guide all those that deny the Hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad aleihi sallam, so that we can all celebrate and commemorate on the same day, United as One Ummah.

MashaAllah finally Dr. Yussef Ismail has clearly explained scientifically and theologically the rationale of moon sighting. Thanks and JKkK.for your efforts in presenting the facts. The most important problem that the wrong dates cause, is they jeopardize our calculations for laylatul Qadr because not everyone can stay up all 10 nights for ebadah and if we want to chose odd nights to stay up they cause massive discombobulation, and difficulty. If naked eye moon sighting is simpler and revives the sunnah then why make things difficult for everyone. Thanks for brilliantly explaining. Asma.

This was a great presentation. I do wonder, though, what is the thought/tradition of the moon being sighted in different areas? Let's say Malaysia or Australia see it but Europe or America don't - do they all follow their own calendar, or follow the first sighting and try to confirm it as much as possible? Thank you again!

Incredible video. It's simply amazing. The only issue I felt was incorrect is to disregard any moon sightings when the moon is less than 24 hours old. There were lots of eye witnesses in North America for this year's Eid-ul-Fitr, when the moon was just 19 hours old.

Greetings from the Philippines! Alhamdulillah I am now challenged to see if I can do moon sighting in our place. But I wonder if the moon patterns (azimuth etc) will be different when sighting from an equatorial country?

Thank you very much for this useful explanation. Would it be possible to also have an explanation with regards to whether the crescent can appear differently in different parts of the world i.e. visible/non-visible (aside from weather differences), and whether it was the sunnah to follow local moon sighting? Thanks

Probably crescent would not be different and there is nothing called local moon sighting cause sighting it self is local thing! There is not much information/study about moon and phases on polar regions! In my opinion that study might bring more light on the topic you have pointed out!

Asalamualaikum doctor Ismail. This is a wonderful, clear and beautifully presented video with such calmness as well. I remember the days of my childhood when our local masjid elders would climb on top of the masjid to seek the moon which now I understand was in the north and north west part of the southern hemisphere and us children would get very excited to see it too, barely over the trees and houses. It was such a beautiful moment in these old days of simplicity. I now fully agree that sighting is the sunnah to follow. But I have one question I would like to ask, is that based on our Prophet Muhammad PBUH hadith quoted in this video, is it sufficient for one country in the world to sight and confirm sighting, for the whole world to then follow (meaning that the hadith should be understood as universal and for local geo or demographics)?

Are those trajectories valid for both hemispheres?
