John Cleese actually lived with some neighbours who kept waking him up by slamming the doors of their cars. This sketch was basically his revenge.

Oliver doesn't know when he's beat, he doesn't know when he's winning either, he has no sensory apparatus known to man. love this. they are all so clever. rock on pythons!!

Oliver is dead but not quite out of it HAHAHA!! The commentary is the funniest part of it lol

I love the way there were only 4 rabbits and debutantes even though there were 5 competitors. It's like they didn't expect one of them to survive that long.

Despite this being a 70s sketch, it's amazing how it's still so relevant today. British comedy never gets old.

I will always view this as the best Python skit ever. I can't stop laughing still after all these years. "Oliver has run himself over!!! "

@@MLaak86 Well, he didn't make it to the end of the course. He would have won if the other twits failed to kill themselves.

I remember I was having a really bad day when I came home and this was in the TV. I laughed so hard I pissed myself totally forgetting my problems. MP making life right again. Happy 50th anniversary boys!

Best part was Oliver running himself over with a car.

The white car is a Triumph (Spitfire?), and yes, the dark car is a Jag XKE. I'd love to own either one, but I'm a Yank who'd be happy with any old basic Brit saloon (Wolseley 1500, Vauxhall Victor, and yes, a Moggie Minor!). For that matter, toss me a BMC Farina-bodied saloon as well!

45 years later and except for needing to be upgraded to hi-def, this is still excellent stuff.

This is the funniest sketch ever in history IMO! I've seen it for 40 years now and every time I end up crawling on the floor laughing like a maniac! Thank god for Monty Python!

This is what? 50 years old now and still funnier than 90% the crap that is on TV or the internet today.

Gotta love British humor.

Graham Chapman definitely does the best facial expressions out of all of them. I love Monty Python.

This is Monty Python's masterpiece, in my opinion. "THE JUMP OF A LIFETIME.....IF ONLY HIS FATHER COULD UNDERSTAND....."

Wonderful stuff from the Python guys. When they got it right they were seriously funny.

By far ..one of my favorite sketches from MP. LOVE IT! There was a second version with John Cleese redoing the play by play, which was even better.

This is my favorite Monty Python skit ever. XD I wish we could have this race every year. Just imagine the preliminaries.

And all these years since I last saw this, I always thought it was Nigel who ran himself over.

That was my day's exercise right there, holy crap! That was the one sketch that made me a fan, it's too much!

I firmly beleive this is 100% better than the "and now for something completely differant" version

If there was ever a time in America for Monty Python, that time is now.

If there is anything funnier that has ever been filmed, I want to see it. I first saw this over 25 years ago and I still laugh hysterically every time. I can quote the damn thing and yet still I laugh out loud. Brilliant!

But the great majority of comedy fans in the US, just don't see the humor.It's too bad. (I'm tired of all this sex on the television, I keep falling off.) Love that one.

My son's mother-in-law (soon), accidentally ran over her foot. The car was on an incline when she got out, the gear shift popped from neutral into reverse, and then: Squished foot. When I overheard the mom & girlfriend using a speaker phone to tell him about it, I couldn't help it--I said, "And Oliver has just run over himself!" I could hear the laughter through his headset. The mom had lived in London when MPFC was on the air.

Best line: "Oh, there's Oliver! He's dead but not necessarily out of it!" LMAO!

Somewhat ironically, this accurately depicts Cleese's state of mind nowadays

And that's why he was that year's outstanding twit.

Monty Python strikes such a wonderful perfect balance between intellectual humor and slapstick. It's incredible.

Forget watching the video just listening to Cleese commentate the the goings on so fervishly and just keeps rolling so hard with it till the bitter end is enough to have you passing out laughing. "Well he's dead now but not quite out of it yet!" Good lord only a Python!

This is absolutely Piss-Your-Pants funny! I don't recall EVER seeing this skit during the '70s when the Python shows were being broadcast in syndication here in the US, and now that I've found it on youtube, I just have to watch it once a day! No matter how many times I watch, it STILL amazes me.

Forget the Parrot Sketch (well don't that's brilliant too) this is the number one Monty Python sketch and is indeed the number one most funniest thing I have ever witnessed in my books.
