    Umps and managers going jaw to jaw over a real or perceived misguided call used to be an occasional part of a baseball game. Sure things got hot and there were ejections but definitely not with the frequency of late. Today’s umpires have easily bruised egos, dubious eyesight (to be fair that’s always been an affliction), thumbs that must be attached to springs because they pop up so often, and the protection of an iron clad union contract with apparently no standard of accountability.

    Until MLB finally decides to hold umpires responsible the same way they hold players and coaches responsible you will continue to see these umpires get worse and worse. These umpires know nothing will happen to them and that’s why They’re on power trips half the time throwing these players and coaches out for simply trying to state their cases.

    Totally agree with this. Some of these umpires just make legit bad calls at the plate. Then either because they are having a bad day or maybe don't particularly care for a player or team they want to throw them out of the game the minute they question a call. Umpires are human too just like everyone else. Umpires need real consequences when their calls look shady or they are just throwing out players for no legit reason. If a commentator can say something has been brewing since the start of a game, then there is a problem. These umpires should be able to be tossed from games as well and replaced mid game if necessary. But having real consequences for umpires will go a long way in assuring teams that everything possible is being done to ensure equity and fairness in games.

    It’s a tremendously difficult job being an ump. The pitches coming at them at over 95 mph. They make decisions in split seconds. Most of the time they’re proved right.

    It's fun to hate on umpires, but it's also funny to see catchers trying to advocate for a pitch that was a foot and a half outside of the strike zone

    The umpires are just annoyed that they have to share their spotlight with the pitchers and catchers, without them the game is more focused on the umps. Everyone knows that people go to these games to watch the umps, not the players and game itself

    This is why I cant stand baseball anymore. Love the sport but hate watching. If a player gets upset the umpure tosses them but he cant be tossed on bad calls or attitude. I dont agree with an umpire walking to the mound. If he has an issue it shpuld ve directed to the coaching.

    Umpires were better back in the day, of couurse they knew the strike zone and had thicker skin. They were umpires because they loved the game.

  • @marceramo2952

    @marceramo2952

    This is just not true. Pitchers and catchers used to have to account for an umpire's personal interpretation of the strike zone. Also, the NL and AL had different officiating crews that answered to different bosses. If an NL pitcher came over to the AL, he had to adjust to a strike zone that was on average 2-4 inches narrower. Baseball officiating may not be ideal, but it has never been better than it is now.
