Car manufacturers often talk of the 'halo effect' of a flagship model. In short, it's spreading the glamour of a well-renowned car onto lesser lights in the range. There are any number of BMW 3 Series drivers who have fantasised about owning an M3 and when this marketing tactic is pursued well it can prove profitable. For a case study in the halo effect falling rather flat on its face, look no further than the Mitsubishi Lancer. To many, the Lancer is the Lancer Evo, the all-wheel drive, turbocharged rally replica that comes laced with a heavy dose of Tommi Makinen forest stage heroics or Police, Camera, Action starring roles, depending on your viewpoint. The Evo didn't create a halo effect. It was so incandescent it cast the rest of the ordinary Lancer range into the darkest shadow.
All of which was a bit of a shame as by the time this generation Lancer appeared in British showrooms in 2008, it had developed into a more than respectable car; certainly something that was a bit more interesting than the usual Astra/Focus/Megane norm. Here's what to look for if you fancy giving it a second chance, second time round.

All these years later it still looks good - better than many current models. I had a 2010 Sportback GTS (US trim), kept it in a garage and ten years later I was still getting compliments on it - most people thought it was a new car it's styling aged so well.

i agree i love the work tha designers made... They hit the right spot between aggressive style and not overdo it like modern car do. Simply line, but well thought. Look how the side line was hint by front headlight, born on the side view and finish on rear lights... Or the steep windshield (this car have a great top speed) that is perfectly integrated with the hood. The C pillar looks elegance without hinting too much at bmw hofmeister kink and the spoiler follow the line set by the line of the rear lights/bumper. I love how she have hint of alfa 156 passion (yeah they set alfa 156 and volvo as stylish benchmark).

I own a 2008 Lancer with the 1.5L engine and im satisfied with it from most point's of perspective, things i don;t like is the stock audio unit and bluethoot it has, is hard to connect to it reasson i went for one of those AUX bluethoot module, the engine is very economic with the fuel efficiency but it could use more HP , reason im tempted to turbo it, overall is a decent daily drive car wick im gonna keep it since Mitsubishi stopped the production line of Lancer/EVO since 2016.

I have the 1.8 sportback version of this car with around 193k km on it. You mentioned the saloon might have a bigger luggage capacity, but I severely doubt that as the booth is much bigger on the sportback. The sportback has quite a massive double storage in the booth as well, which the saloon does not have. You also forgot to mention the absolutely amazing rockford fosgate stereo system that's equiped in the high-end models as well as the light-sensor and rain-sensor, which the entry models do not have. Nontheless it's a great car, especially for the money. If you don't care about luggage capacity, the saloon is a great option.

I have the 1.8 Manual GS3 2011 red, its my first car i got in 2023. I love it, Blacked out rims and windows and a custom straight pipe exhaust sounds great. Has had issues tho, had to get a new front subframe, it snapped and the front left strut collapsed. Rear control arms both had to get replaced at its service, so its not been cheap to run for me but fingers crossed its fine from here, Love the car tho.
