    @@PaintingandDecorating what causes repair filler powder plaster (no nonsense screw fix stuff) to ‘chip’ when painting it though? I’ve repaired some walls and even in misting (fluffy roller), notice the filler seems to become chipped and no where near as smooth from its sanding, after being painted. I end up refilling it again. Can’t be normal?

    Had a question I've skimmed back to my bare plaster walls.... It's been done a good few year ago 6+. Filled in the holes and cracks to repair as kuch polyfilla. Going to coat watered down Leyland contract matt on them before applying it as a full first layer of mist coat. Does the new plaster situation(problematics) apply the same to old but bare plaster? *it's had multiple wallpaper and paint layers which is why I stripped it back, and definitely not sure if it was painted the very first time*

    What most people don't realise about paint is that it cures and doesn't just 'dry'. The same thing happens with cement based mixtures. These cure by hydration meaning that the chemical reaction depends on the correct volume of free water. When you apply emulsion to fresh plaster a significant amount of the water is absorbed by the plaster meaning it is not free to cure the paint. This is who you add extra water to the first coat to account for that absorbed.

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    @PaintingandDecorating

    All water-based paints undergo a “drying process”. During this process, they go through two distinct phases, namely evaporation and coalescence.

    @@minax2919 Yes, it did. I did two coats of paint I think on the walls but that wasn't because of having to go over the filled areas necessarily. From recollection as it was some time back now, I think I actually had a slightly higher ratio of paint to water than it said on the back of the paint tin but it seemed to work fine. I painted the wall in a slightly '0ff-white' colour and the Polyfilla was white of course but I would think the misting would also work if you were painting over in any colour.

    It depends really on the colour of your top coat.... and the finish... paint for plaster has no washable properties and does not really seal the surface..... plus the first coat should be a mist coat so it soaks right in and does not just form a skin on the surface... waiting to come off in the future. best to put two top coats. Thanks

    I know you like experients. It would be interesting to see how deep paints and PVA soak into fresh plaster when neat and when mixed with various percentages of water. This would require a strips of new plaster which could be painted and then broken when dried to measure the penetration depth. Just an idea.
