50 / 50 worked perfectly for me - thank you!
Great video. As a painter myself this is perfectly accurate. One tip I would say is, I would fill any defects after applying the mist coat as that paint layer will show everything then run a pole sander all over afterwards. 👍

My 7 year old, 4 bed house has smooth cement walls. The wally that painted it first time did not give the walls sufficient drying time nor did they use an appropriate mist coat. Now my fun job is sanding and repainting the whole place due to all the blistering and peeling paint. The first coat must be thin enough to soak into and seal the surface. I 100% agree a 50:50 mix is ideal, if a little splattery. Cheers and looking forward to all your upcoming renovation vids.

@TheDIYGuy1 About halfway done so far doing it room by room on weekends, etc. Also, because it's smooth cement render external and internal (SE Asia construction), it helps to use an alkali control. Luckily, Nippon Paint (Japan Dulux equivalent) makes such a product, but I still water it down 50% to be sure. Hope your reno progress is somewhat quicker. Cheers
Really clear and precise / little bit of charisma - quality video 👍
Great video yes I have always mixed 50/50 when mist coating and never had a problem I always put mist coat on first and then fill anywhere needed also give it a light sand over once dry I find the sand paper never clogs up

Thanks for another great video Cameron. One question please. After rubbing down, should a damp cloth be used to get any dust off the surface before painting on the mist coat ??
Very timely video. I’ve just had to redo all my ceiling tape and jointing that I messed up first time round and have just finished sanding down the easifill I used to fix it all. Was going to just crack out the zinsser 123 that I used the first time but now realise a mist coat would be better first. One thing I’d recommend - wear safety glasses and face mask if you’re sanding more than just a tiny bit of the ceiling. A crazy amount of dust came down, which again speaks more to my inability to use easifill properly more than anything I suspect!

Brilliant advice Cameron, i certainly agree with 50/50 and never had a problem (do get covered in paint spray though). I wonder if the people that have had issues have used vinyl matt, which I think is a no no for misting. Look forward to the next video 👍🏻

Thanks for the great video, Had a question that maybe you could offer some advice. When dealing with Lime Plaster is the process the same? Am using mineral based undercoat and mineral paint so the lime plaster can breath but not sure about mist coating, first do I need to with lime plaster and if so do I mix 50/50 using the mineral paint? Cheers mate and again thanks for the great tips.
70 paint 30 water ratio for me , just seems easier to apply as not overly thin , better to fill after the mistcoat though, make sure not to use a Vinyl Matt as well , however the Screwfix bare plaster paint is excellent for mistcoating. Been in the trade over 30 years and it's probably the best i've used for the job. Nice vid mate .👍

Do I need a sealer when patching plaster?
Hey, I’m a new subscriber and have learnt a lot already. I have a question regarding painting. I’ll be filling in a door way with plaster board. What’s the best way to prep this for paint or wallpaper?
Hand sanded 40m2 ceiling last week. I wasn't aware pole sanders existed and even during sanding it didnt occur to me to look for one. Even while using my pole to apply the mist coat i never thought, "this would also be useful when sanding".

Haha sometimes the stuff we overlook is a surprise. I often find some new way of doing something and wonder why it’s taken me years to figure out a better way
As a professional decorator myself, id recommend to anyone to do any filling after the mist coat as the bare plaster can absorb any moisture from the filler and may make it not sit on plaster properly. Also i sand after mist coat

Hi what grade sanding mesh did you have? That link you attached in the description doesnt have 180. Also i have painted my mist coat. And then applied second coat and it doesnt seem to cover up some patches. Im sure it was 100% all dry before painting. Heard it could be when some plasterers shine the plaster too much? I tried several coats and it doesn't cover some areas. Seems to just slide off. Can i use like stain blocker on it? Then paint over it? Its in the kitchen celling and some new plaster areas on the walls. Thank you!!
Perfect timed video.. Having a outbuilding plastered this week. How long would you recommend for plaster to dry naturally before placing on misting coat? (with currrent cold UK summer weather). I will defo use the 50/50 mix recommendation for mist coat.
@TheDIYGuy1

Thanks. That’s dependant on what’s behind the plaster but in the current climate id say 3-5 days.
Have you ever tried Screwfix bare plaster paint? Ive always used that and it gives a much whiter coverage than a mist coat which i've found saves me one coat later on. Also a lot less mess from splashing.

Very helpful! Did you wait for the first coat to dry before applying the second ? Also, if I’m going to be painting a colour after, do I need to do a coat of undiluted emulsion, in white first? Or colour straight onto the dried mist?
@TheDIYGuy1

Thanks. The first coat will dry very quickly. After your mist coats you can go on with colour.
Another vote for 50:50 (using the cheapest white emulsion I can find). I also add a generous splurge of PVA. Again, no problems with that mix, but it does sound like the addition of PVA isn't really necessary.

After sanding is it worth wiping down the walls with a damp clothe or not? Will the dust affect the paint sticking?

Your welcome. I’ll see what I can do
My sister in law has just had her new bathroom fitted and had new lights and an extractor fitted in the ceiling, the ceiling was replastered but they didn't repaint it (don't know why they didn't it cost a pretty penny but that's my sister-in-laws choice), she has asked me to paint it for her and she was told my tge guy that fitted the bathroom that once the ceiling was dry it would need to be sealed using a pva solution but your method is brilliant, so do I need to seal it with pva or do a "mist" with diluted emulsion. Love you informative videos 👍

Thanks. The link only has 120 and 220 grits. Will thry also be OK?
I have removed wallpaper from our walls and have scrubbed and washed the wallpaper glue residue away. I am getting ready to paint, should I prepare the plaster for paint in the same way with the miscoat (?) as if new?

Hi. If I have an old plastered ceiling (paint has been all scraped off) would the same process work? Mist coat first and paint after? (bathroom ceiling) I saw some people using PVA before painting. Which one is better and why (mist coat or PVA)? Is the white emulsion that you use for the mist coat the same paint that you can use for final painting? or these are different things? (sorry for the dumb question but I am not used with products names here)

I was hired to fix a plaster bathroom ceiling that had been painted but was peeling all over. I scraped everything clean, including the old drywall mud that was around the perimeter (ceilings were coved) and then applied a bonding primer (recommended by sherwin williams even after I questioned the dude multiple times after having watched tons of KZread videos and worrying about getting the right primer. The next day after it dried, I re did the drywall around the edges, applied more primer the next day, and then painted the following day.. the home owner was happy, and asked me back to fix some plaster holes left when their new kitchen counter was installed.. I’m going to use player of paris that I mix myself, first time doing it, just curious if I need a primer.. As a handyman I’m always learning
I prefer cracks holes indentations it gives life to the walls and looks great with new paint.
Wish I'd seen this video sooner. Currently on my first renovation, everything I've figured out the hard way has been 100% spot on with what you've said in this video! Would you give the mist coat a quick sand all over before applying the top coat of colour? Or is that it good to go now?

We bought our house brand new 25 years ago and because we had two children, one of 15 months and the other only three weeks when we were due to move in, we paid a professional decorating business to paint it from top to bottom for us. Unfortunately they never bothered with the mist coat and I have been paying the price for their laziness ever since. Especially the ceilings. Almost every one of them has peeled.
I assume you wipe down after sanding with a damp cloth/sponge?
In your new house will you be installing fitted wardrobes? If so it would be good to watch and see how you would do it as its very expensive to get a professional in. Cheers

Reading comments I'm not sure what to do now. Use filler before or after the mist coat?? I have lots of dents and divots in the skimmed over plasterboards. Lots of large deep areas also where the plaster has popped off from the drywall screws.
@Georgerossiter2000
9 ай бұрын
I would say use filler afterwards. If it's bare plaster the mist coat is applied to, the plaster will suck any moisture out of the filler and will flake off. The mist coat will provide a barrier so it will be easier to fill any imperfections. If your walls/ceiling where it's popped out from the screws are previously painted, simply add a watery coat to seal the hole then fill and paint over after with normal paint. Same with skimmed plasterboard damage minus the mist coat - just fill and paint over making sure surface is clean before painting. Hope this helps 👍
