    You two should do a video with a question and answer theme for your viewers. I watch all your videos and In my opinion there is no other decorating channel that is as professional and as thorough as you guys. Would be interesting to know more about you both and how you became to be where you are today! I’ve always done a lot of decorating over the years, and I enjoy watching your videos to expand my knowledge in this trade, being a jack of all trades kind of guy myself spending Monday to Friday doing up houses. Thanks. Marc

    Thanks mate, this was really informative. Renovating a new build (1999) and can't paint anywhere as roller would just rip up paint. Drove me nuts. Now I understand what's happened. Way I'm solving it... Big sander with hoover attachment (reduces dust massively) to get rid of as much badly adhered paint as possible, sanded down to the plasterboard paper. It took about a day for living room with 120 grit. Next will apply zinsser product which is designed to go over cracked and peeling paint, this should help areas where there is still fine original magnolia paint left and stop it from lifting. What a pain, all because some didn't add a bit of water.

    About 10 yrs ago I had my staircase plastered and decided to do a mist coat with some old paint out of the garage Plasterer said use 50/50 water/emulsion and I thought the vinyl silk emulsion I had would be ok. everything was going great until I put a coat of the final paint on. The mist coat started blistering and peeling off as it hadn't stuck to the wall. I had to scrape it all off, but it wouldn't all come off. I could have cried !!!

    My theory is that you're best off using a durable emulsion for a mist coat. Expensive, but it has the vinyl that you'd get in PVA, and it provides a good base coat for subsequent coats, Contract matt is great for new builds where the plaster might not be dry yet, but it's a dusty substrate for any future work and needs sealing just like fresh plaster, especially if you're papering. The whole mist coat debacle is too much 😅

    I’ve been searching everywhere for answers and finally found it. I will explain in detail what I did and how best I can avoid this nightmare in the future. I stripped some wallpaper, washed the walls with sugar soap and filled and sanded using 180 grit sandpaper. I made sure that all existing wallpaper residue was removed. There was still original paint on the wall, most probably from the1930s when the house was originally built. Because it wasn’t bare plaster I went ahead a painted 2 undiluted coats of Leyland Contract Matt emulsion on the wall. a month or so later decided because the surface was starting to form cracks and it wasn’t as perfect as I had wanted it to be to use lining paper. I knew I had to seal the surface as contract Matt is quite chalky. I used watered down PVA to size the wall, left it to dry and then lined the walls using Solvite wallpaper paste from a packet. After 24 hrs I was about to paint it and noticed the paper was starting to come away from the wall and with it chunks of paint. I’ve been asking around online and off as to what to do. Some people suggest Zinzeer Guardz but I would rather ask you because I like your logical scientific approach to things.

    That depends on your paint that you use for your finish because some can be thinned and used as a mist coat. But white contract emulsion is cheap and used as a mist coat is a good base for any colour.

    In my experience the paint will flake from a wall if 1) it was painted before the plaster was properly dry, so that the paint just sat on the surface or 2) the PVA or mist coat was insufficiently thinned and therefore could not soak into the surface. Good video.

    What can I do if my painter/decorator has used silk paint for the most coat and the paint is now peeling off? I had my hallway plastered two years ago and then paid for it to be professionally painted by a local person who was recommended. Initially it looked fine but a week after he had finished some of the paint peeled off right down to the plaster. I didn’t know what to do so left it alone but now parts of the wall could do with a fresh coat of paint, I tried today and the paint peeled off, I guess it was wishful thinking to believe it would be fine to paint over. Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Extremely difficult you can try and seal the wall from re wetting. But that is difficult you have to paint fast and allow to fully dry... using a washable matt or Zinsser 123.. other one is steam strip or wet and strip... if it wants to come off take it off. Thanks good luck

Acrylic Eggshell , A Vinyl Matt etc as a finish coat and your point is irrelevant. I still say PVA on bare plaster is a big no, no and most other painters would agree. I do know some painters that don't thin contract matt with water though ,absolute clowns. 25 years in the trade so no young buck here . I wish i still was !

    It works for us and saves me money. We are not saying mist coating does not work and if your doing room after room on building sites or just a house plastered all the way through and you're told what to do then it's fine. On jobs, we use PVA all the time to seal dust and holes before filling and after. PVA before we paper instead of using size. It's great stuff as long as you understand how to use it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5ikztVtiKXOirg.html This property was all PVA first to seal plaster.

    It's a six-inch flat brush that we use. And would not save you time on site or new build, but when am working just in one building or room, I find that you can do a lot of sanding and filling before you paint and PVA hardens the surface and seals filler. Plaster sometimes needs a lot of work on it before you can paint. And I like to get my work looking good.

    "Applying a mist coat will sufficiently seal your new plaster after it has dried. Many professional painters do not recommend using PVA glue to seal your plaster, as it can cause issues later on. The paint that you then apply afterwards is likely to sit on top of the PVA if you use this method. This means that it will fail to deeply penetrate your surface and subsequently the paint will not last very long. Paint quickly starts to peel off and chip away if plaster has been treated with PVA prior to application." Just one of many bits of advice i've seen on various builders/decorators websites.

    PVA dries more quickly than a mist coat and therefore can speed the job up. Whether PVA or mistcoat the secret to sussesfully sealing the surface is sufficiently thinning the mix so that it soaks well into the surface. Insufficiency thinned PVA or mistcoat will just sit on the substrate.

    PVA is activated by water, and all paints contain water, hence why it is discouraged as primer. Contract Matt (and especially Leyland) leaves a chalky/dirty residue on the wall that doesn't let paint stick, so that's a terrible product to use for mist coat/undercoat.

  • @PaintingandDecorating

    @PaintingandDecorating

    Wrong... Because PVA is a reversible material it's perfect for water based paints. PVA is a glue it soaks into a surface and is very difficult to extract it may get wet but that only helps the paint to stick better. Once fully dry it's tough a lot better than a mist coat. Paint can be thrown out by moisture that doesn't happen with PVA. Also I'm not a paint manufacturer trying to sell you more paint... a mist coat done correctly does work but is not my go to choice. Because New plaster always needs a lot of preparation PVA is perfect for the first coat. Thanks
